Who Won Talladega?

by

Who won was a question  NASCAR, race teams and fans were asking. There were a few long minutes of confusion at the end of the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Sunday as NASCAR determined who had won.

The caution flag flew just seconds after race leader Kevin Harvick took the white flag as A. J. Allmendinger’s No. 43 Ford went airborne.

The question was whether Kevin Harvick or Clint Bowyer was in the lead as the caution was put out.

NASCAR rules dictate that during the course of a race when a caution period is called the running order is set by positions at various electronic scoring loops around the track.

But on the Last lap the rules are different. The winner is determined by who is in the lead at the exact moment of caution. It does not revert back to scoring loops. Who led at the start finish line is not even an issue as some crew members seemed to believe.

After analyzing all the evidence NASCAR Officials determined that Clint Bowyer was in the lead at the moment of caution.

It’s a confusing system I know. But other than the old way of racing back to the flag when a caution occurs I don’t know what else NASCAR can do. Do you?

  2. Sorry Clint,
Great race, however, upon slow, enlarged,, rerunning of all views of finish line, Kevin was just millemeters ahead….Just great that JJ didn’t get any more points.

Sorry, Buddy, don’t celebrate too much………..

  4. Just give me the good old days when crossing the finish line was called the “winner”. I know things change in all sports, but I can imagine how Keven Harvick feels. Both guys drove a terrific race and I really like both of them. One thing for sure, they can bask in the fact that JJ did not win. I can only imagine what these last races will be. Exciting, of course, can’t wait….

  6. Who cares who won the race, at lease it wasn’t Jimmy Johnson.

  8. Don’t know what else they could have done! I agree with the outcome of the cup more than the outcome of the truck race. Kyle Busch did go below the yellow line as he passed Almirola. Whether his truck was loose or not is disputable. When Regan Smith had the win taken away from him he was forced below the yellow line.

  10. Even though my guy didn’t win it was a good race. What were the rules in the old days before the idiotic chase format?

AZomah, back in the day if the same thing would have happened the drivers would have stayed in the gas and raced back to the finish line. First one there wins and just hope you don’t hit anything.

  14. And Nascar wonders why their ratings keep going down? What happened to the part on JJ’s car last week – how much did it cost to get that shushed up and no penalty either? From what I saw in the truck race, Kyle Bush went below the yellow line to advance his position – just one more reason not to watch NASCAR races anymore.

  16. What a great race to watch. My wife’s favorite driver and my favorite driver did not fair well, but it was a fun race to watch. Love the racing where pushing gets dramatic results. Wow – what fun. I like so many of the drivers and there are so many things to enjoy even when some of your most favorites are not doing well. For the people that are upset about the rule makers and those that make the calls, I will say remember Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. (-;

  18. JOSH: I heard someone say that it was NOT an illegal part, as most would have LOVED it to be. It was a “loose” Drive Shaft cover, worn from being removed and put back on too many times. It was never an illegal part…NEVER, it was a defective part… End of story.

The Press, as usual, tried to make a story where there wasn’t one. People seem to be very vicious here toward Jimmy Johnson, just because he’s won 4 Championships. Although I am NOT a huge Fan of Jimmy J. I would still like to see him win a 5th Title and set a record for other drivers to set their sights on.

I think if ANYONE set a 5 consecutive Championships Title Record, that would be such a great record, one that ALL drivers would have to try and best. As difficult as that may be, I think it would make the “Sport” that much more exciting. Yes I said “Sport”, which many people do not think it is. Have you EVER seen the results of a NASCAR Race on the evening News, or any News at all? I know I haven’t….. NEVER!!! :o(

Although Dale Jr did not win or even place, I think it was awesome that he lead 19 Laps in this Race, had ALL the Fans on their feet each and everytime he lead. It shows the “Nay Sayers” that he hasn’t lost his touch, all he needs to a good car, good crew chief and an owner that will give him ALL the tools he needs to beat Johnson, Gordon and the other 40 Drivers on the track that he’s back! Great job Jr, I think you will be in Full Race Form come February and have a Great 2011, hopefully even a Title!?!? :-)

  20. In my opinion, the photo above says it all, what a great Sport! Almost ALL the Drivers have the respect of each other. IF, and I say IF Keven Harvick thought for a second that he was cheated out of that Win, do you really think he would NOT have been extremely upset? Nobody would have been able to keep him quiet, he would have been jumping up and down telling anyone that would listen that HE WON but he was satisfied with the results.

There was no way they could Race back to the line, not with all the wrecked cars on the Track and parts everywhere! That would have presented so much more Danger for all the Drivers still racing… Who really knows who would have come out on top, who would have wrecked going through all the wrecked cars and parts, possibly wrecking themselves!

  24. Deborah: Thank you for the correction, missed part of the race, last I heard it was 19. Next time I will do my best to watch the ENTIRE Race and get my facts right!

  26. I think Nascar should, if the don’t already, put a camera at the start finish line, and whomever crosses it first should be the winner, when a caution comes out like it did Sunday. I’m glad it was someone other than Denny Hamlin, I do not want him to win the championship, he is such a little smart A–, anyone but him, regardless of whom, as much as I dislike Jack Rousch, even I would pull for him rather than DH. Nascar may have it fixed so Hamlin will win it all though, I think maybe so, it sure seems that way. I guess we will see.

I was very proud of Jr. yesterday, I think he had the fastest car out there, it was such a shame that he got into that wreck, they would have had to deal with him at the end for sure, it seemed he could go anywhere at anytime.

  28. I think the reason Nascar’s ratings are down so much is, because they let anyone and everyone win except Jr. If Jr. would start winning, I think the stands would be full each and every week, people are tired of the Hamlin’s, Boyers’s Stewart’s and the like winning each and every week. Go back and check the schedule and see which one’s win all the time, I have each and every week written down and the fans are getting tired of it. Also, the economy is really bad as well. and people cannot afford a weekend at the races, maybe Nascar should cut the prices and not be so greedy.

  30. There IS one Driver I really can not stand Winning and that is whiny Kyle Busch. It is OK for him to wreck anyone he pleases but when someone wrecks him is is a totally different story.

Not to get anyone hurt but I would like nothing better then to see him brush the wall, just enough so he can not run up front with everyone else. He still acts like NASCAR owes him a living and to H*** with everyone else.

A few weeks ago he RAN OVER the double zero, but got really upset when that Driver came back and wrecked him. He was WHINING on the radio that NASCAR better do something about that OR he would.

Joe Gibbs got him in the Pits after the Race and read him the riot act, just as he was going over to Micheal Waltrip’s Garage. I guess after that he had second thoughts! He is still a boy in a man’s body.

He still acts like he is the ONLY one that is suppose to win…… Wreck him each race til he understands that other Drivers aren’t going to take his crap any longer!!!!!

That is just MY Opinion and do not expect anyone else to agree with me.

  32. I think you should race to the checkered fleg if a caution comes out after the white flag is waved. There is NO luicky dog.

  34. Altho Kevin H can be outspoken, there is not doubt he is a good, smart racer and I would like to see him win. JR.
should be up there contending and the last few races have shown he is still a great racer when he can get a car that doesn’t fall apart. Being the gentlemen he is, he rushed over to apologize to Jeff Burton, another gentlement that you hear very little complaints out of…
Jr. will bring the fans back, look at the crowds go wild when he gets up front, he is NASCAR and without him the ratings are going to keep going down. Fans expect an Earnhardt in a race and he represents HIS family well, not the step-inlaws. I’m sure SR. is turning over in his grave
if stepmom goes with Ford. Jr. says he will not allow a ford in his driveway. I don’t think it will be good for the sport if JJ wins again and Danny is getting too smooth talking like JJ. Go Kevin! If Jr. can’t be there I’ll root for you and Childress. 2011 will be Jr’s year….another crew chief of course. Think there has been someone behind the scenes that we don’t know about that has been working of his cars! Always a JR. fan regardless.

  36. Ron, you just dont know how many of us totally agree with you about Kyle Busch. I have felt from the very start when he begain racing and showing his bad attitude that if he became a winning racer, he would continue to act like everyone owed him something. Well, then I figured when he became engaged, that cute little girl would teach him a thing or two. She’s got a long way to go. I will say he is somewhat learning to at least give an interview when he loses or when he wrecks. Maybe if he races long enough, he will eventually grown up.

Tell me what you're thinking...
