What if Dale Earnhardt Did Not Drive for Richard Childress?

What if Dale Earnhardt had Driven for Junior Johnson Instead of  Richard Childress?

Rick Houston over at NASCAR.com asks Richard Childress a very important question.

How would Richard Childress Racing have turned out if Dale Earnhardt had raced for Junior Johnson instead of Childress?

“You’ll never know,” said Childress.” Dale was a huge player.”

The article details how Junior Johnson had a deal with Earnhardt, and how Dale nearly went to drive for Johnson before sponsor conflicts came to a head.

Junior Johnson surely regrets the deal he brokered to send Earnhardt to the No. 3 car instead of a Junior Johnson car.

So do the sponsors who refused to back Earnhardt as his career was getting started.

Richard Childress would not have 6 NASCAR Championships without Dale Earnhardt.

But that street goes both ways. Earnhardt and Childress had a chemistry that would have never existed between Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson.

Dale Earnhardt would never have 7 NASCAR Championships without Richard Childress.

  2. I guess all of us could do some “what ifs” on a lot of different things in NASCAR and to some that would be daydreaming to some and dread to others. As for me, being an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt for the many years he drove, I can truthfully say I believe he would have driven just as hard for Junior as he did for Childress and I wouldn’t change a minute for all the excitement he’s given to me and other fans for so many years. Thanks Dale….

  6. I agree with Goldie, DALE WAS DALE AND THERE WILL NEVER, EVER BE ANOTHER ONE LIKE HIM, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY WON’T LET ANYBODY RACE THE WAY HE DID. JR TRIED AND THEY FINED HIM EVERY TIME FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER.I’M A GM FAN AND I’M GLAD HE DROVE A CHEVY, BUT ALL IN ALL ALOT THAT HAS GONE ON IN NASCAR TODAY, I FEEL WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF HE WERE LIVING. HE DID NOT LIKE THE RACES GOING FROM THE SOUTH, AND NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS IT IS A TRULY SOUTHERN SPORT. GRAMMY 67
IT SHOWS WITH ALL THE CAROLINA TRACKS CLOSED, TOO BAD SOMEONE COULD’NT BRING THE RACE BACK TO THEM WITH SOME SORT OF RACING. THAT’S WHERE RACING STARTED. GRAMMY 67

  8. It is ashamed that many of the old tracks have been left behind. Thank goodness some of the drivers are picking up the old dirt tracks and giving the people good shows again. Tony has done very well with his track in Ohio, Eldora. But since then some of the other guys have bought tracks. Putting some of their money back in to what made them. As for Dale Sr., have you ever heard another say he could see the air coming over the cars. Not feel it but see it. He was one of a kind, A WINNER!!
