Texas Post Race Chatter
November 2nd, 2008 | by RacingWin |What A Gas: Texas post race wrap up
“Never had Bob yell at me for going too fast, but he did tonight.” ~ Carl Edwards
Here’s your chance to speak up on the Dickies 500. The fastest car doesn’t always win the race. Sometimes fuel mileage comes into play and a less than dominant car wins the race.
This time Carl Edwards won the race on fuel mileage — and he had the fastest car. Go figure.
I wondered for a while if Edwards might be black flagged by NASCAR for failing to meet the minimum speed set by NASCAR. He never was, so I guess he was going fast enough.
“Never had Bob yell at me for going too fast, but he did tonight,” said race winner Carl Edwards about his late race crawl to the finish.
There are still a few questions that need to be answered about this race.
- How was Carl Edwards able to run almost 70 laps without stopping for fuel when no one else did?
- Did David Gilliland intentionally wreck Juan Pablo Montoya?
- Was NASCAR justified in parking the No. 38 car?
- What really happened to Jimmie Johnson’s car? Chad Knaus isn’t saying?
- Will Joey Logano ever live up to the hype that preceded him? He finished 40th, while Brad Keselowski finished 19th in his 1st race.
- Will Jeff Gordon ever win a race at Texas?
We want your opinion. Fire up your computer and let us know your thoughts.

GARY, I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY. MONTOYA IS
NOTORIOUS FOR WRECKING PEOPLE. AND WHERE DID
CARL GET ALL HIS GAS, THERE IS NO WAY EVERYONE
ELSE COULD ONLY RUN 55 TO 60 LAPS ON A TANK OF
GAS AND CARL CAN RUN 60 OR 70. GET REAL!!!!

LOOKED TO ME THAT MONTOYA MOVED UP AS DAVID MOVED DOWN AND THAT CAUSED A RACING MISHAP. NO, THINK NASCAR WAS WRONG TO PARK DAVID. ALSO AGREE WITH THOSE THAT THINK 69 OR 70 LAPS WERE TOO MANY FOR THE GAS THAT THE CARS HAD. JEFF EXPLAINED HIS BY CRUISING THE TRACK UNDER CAUTION BUT CARL HAS NO REASONABLE EXPLANATION. COULD THERE BE SOME CHEATING AGAIN ON 99????????

IT SEEMS THAT NASCAR IS GETTING AS BAD AS PRO WRESTLING, I HAVE NO FAITH IN WHAT NASCAR DOES THESE DAYS. I TOLD MY HUSBAND WHEN CARL EDWARDS HAD HIS TROUBLES A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THAT NASCAR WOULD FIND A WAY FOR CARL TO COME BACK AND POSSIBLY WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND I BELIEVE NASCAR IS LETTING JACK ROUSH CHEAT. THERE IS NO WAY A CAR CAN GO 69 OR 70 LAPS ON A TANK OF GAS. THERE IS JUST NO WAY!!!!! IF I HAD BEEN RICK HENDRICK, RICHARD CHILDRESS AND THE OTHER TEAM OWNERS, I DON’T CARE HOW MUCH IT COST, I WOULD HAVE PROTESTED AND WOULD HAVE MADE THEM TEAR THE CAR DOWN TO THE RAILS. SOMETHING WAS TERRIBLY WRONG, AND IT STINKS LIKE THE DEVIL!!!!!!!

I think carl had more than a little more gas extra, at the speed he was going, there was something illegal going on in that car, my opinion. Carl knows he can’t beat Johnson unless he has some kind of pull. I think they should check his car out, of course the way they brag him up, I don’t believe anything will be done anyway.
As for Montoya goes, as dirty he is, he just got his due.

Thoughts;
1. Brad K really did a nice job in his first race. Wish he could run against soggy bread for rookie of the year in 2009.
2. Glad to see Tony JR. go for it even if they ran out of gas; they had nothing to lose and I don’t think JR”S care if they go to the banquet in NY or not.
3. If Jr ran out of gas, there is really something weird with flipster’s car; tear it down and find out where the hidden gas was.
4. Really looks like this is the WWF/NASCAR when the 48 took a dive to tighten up the race for the chase; what a farce.

IF JIMMIE JOHNSON OR JEFF GORDON HAD WON THE RACE, NO ONE WOULD BE QUESTIONING THE GAS MILAGE ON THEIR CARS. CARL WON THE RACE FAIR AND SQUARE. GET A LIFE!!!!!

Clean good racing and driving CARL. In my comment after Atlanta last week, I said Carl will lead the most laps and the one that counts at Texas. I like Jimmie, he’s won the champion ship, so lets give Carl a break, he deserves the championship this year.

Fuel mileage to win a race just plain sucks. Nascar needs to go back to a larger but safer fuel cell. They shrunk the tanks down for safety but I don’t think there is that much difference in that case if they use the tanks with the safety sponge in them. Carl could be cheating but it could also be that his car was using less fuel with a perfect setup. If your car has less drag for instance through the turns…you can pick up some extra miles per tank. The harder the tires…the less energy it takes to turn them. There are a whole lot of things in a race car that can legally improve gas mileage if they do everything just right.
Juan Pablo was beating the paint off a bunch of cars, including Jrs.,before he got knocked out. I was listening to Jrs scanner. JPM asked for it. That wreck was just the end of a fight. JPM gets way too physical and then he has the balls to go on national TV and call the other drivers idiots.
Jimmy just had a bad day. They had problems getting the car just right so, he just sandbagged a bit to keep from wrecking.
Joey and Brad are both awesome drivers. Don’t go judging them by one race! Give them some time to get used to the new cars and you will see them up front. If Joey’s car was out of adjustment to the point where he could not go through the turns at as high a speed as the rest…that would have hindered him throughout the race. It takes time to understand how these COT cars work.
If Jeff gets a good race going with a good car he can win anywhere.

This may be a little lengthy but I have an opinion on the Texas race the same as everyone else.
1. How was Carl able to run 69-70 laps on a tank of fuel??? Arent the tanks in these cars the same, don’t they use the same kind of Sunoco gas? Looks like something that only Jack Rousch and Nascar can explain. I may be a little naive but aren’t these cars supposed to go through inspection before and after the race? Seens Nascar decided not to bring Carl in for random or otherwise inspection. Thereare lots of fast cars on the tract but seems this year the 99 and the 18 certainly exceeded the speed limits. Honestly and fairly, I doubt it but Nascar rules. I love Nascar as a sport and it is looking more and more by the empty seats that the fans are getting fed up with controlled racing and this wonderful sport may eventually wind up in the toilet if Nascar officials don’t get their heads out of same and let this be a race like it was in the beginning. As in any sport there has to be rules butmake them fair and apply to ALL!!!Marcel says that Johnson has already won a championship and that Edwards needs a break. You don’t win championship by getting breaks…you earn them fair and square. I’m not a 48 fan and I would say by past occurrences that the 48 hasn’t always been on the up and up either. You said Carl is a clean racer, what about Talladega. Yes, he maintained his second place spot but look at all the contenders, good contenders like 88 and 17 that we pushed to the back.
2. I sure hope that the 38 wrecked the 42 intentionally. You know what they say about paybacks. Montoya is a dirty racer, much like Kyle Busch and now Carl Edwards and he deserved whatever he got. Should they had parked Gilliland?? NO, NO AND NO. Did they park Edwards at Talladega. I think he knew what he was doing. That took care of Question 3 also.
4. I think the 48 team is playing cat and mouse with the 99 giving him a false sense of hope. You see, when the race was over the 48 still held onto enough points to hold their position.
5. For Joey Logano. It really isn’t fair to put so much pressure on him by running him in the cup series. He is just an 18 year old kid, let him grow up and learn how to cope with the competition in the cup series, the tracks and the car. I know he wants to get out there and show what he can do but his time will come. Let him learn from the bottom up.
Dale, Jr. didn’t start out in the cup either.
And finally. I don’t know if Gordon will ever win at Texas but if it were up to me, he would never win another race He should be like Rusty Wallace, and go out while he’s ahead. AND THAT IS MY OPINION.

I had the race taped on my DVR and I replayed the wreck with Gilliland and Montoya over and over. Gilliland ran the exact same line all the way around the turn. Montoya slung up the track in from of Gilliland and clipped Gilliland’s left front with his right rear. Typical Montoya if you ask me!!!!! He seems to think he is a law unto himself. I think he’s a rude loudmouth, or worse things I cannot say! lol! Can’t stand the guy, if you haven’t guessed. NASCAR obviously needs to look out for safety, but they have never parked anyone else in the middle of a race and it’s not fair to do so now. GO JR!!!!!!

Michael Waltrip, Robby Gordon and Kevin Harvick are 3 drivers that have been parked by NASCAR for rough driving.
I’m sure there are more, but those 3 come to mind.
Doesn’t happen that often, but Gilliland made it too obvious.

I DON’T KNOW HOW,BUT I THINK NASCAR DID ALL THIS MESS IN TEXAS BY LETTING CARL WIN AND GET SOME MORE POINTS,SO THAT PEOPLE WOULD BUY MORE TICKETS FOR THE LAST TWO RACES.SORRY THAT JR.RAN OUT OF GAS,STILL DON’T KNOW HOW CARL MADE 69 OR 70 LAPS WITHOUT RUNNING OUT OF GAS.IS THERE MORE CHEATING GOING ON WITH ROUSH RACING AND NASCAR?

I dont know why some fans are against Carl. If he wins a race, gas ,tires, pits, driving skill, whatever, he desevers to win. I would say the same to any other driver. Let the man race.

You all need to get a life! Jeff Gordon didn’t run out of gas either! Could it be that Jeff and Carl are better drivers when it comes to conserving fuel? Carl and Jeff both slowed down, didn’t brake as much ran a line that allowed this and they came out 1-2. What about Jimmie and all the cheating they have done in the past. Chad won’t tell anything and he doesn’t share with his other HMS teams and his attitude was horrible. I think he’s a sore looser and a D bag.

The reason Jeff Gordon did not run out is that he had more gas. He was on a different pit cycle from Carl.
Jeff was the first car one lap down when Juan Pablo Montoya and David Gilliland wrecked — he was the lucky dog.
NASCAR opened pit road allowing the lead lap cars to pit. At this point Gordon was still one lap down.
After the leaders were on pit road NASCAR was forced to close pit road because Juan Pablo Montoya was sitting sideways on pit road unable to continue after he was unable to make the turn into the garage.
This allowed Jeff Gordon to stay on the track for a few laps before pitting while Montoya’s car was removed.
After pit stops were completed Gordon was given the free pass and joined the tail end of the lead lap with more gas than everyone else.
Confusing, I know.

I think they parked Kurt Busch for his incident in Dover in 2007 when he went after Tony Stewart in the pits and about ran over his pit crew member.
NASCAR is taking a beating here with all of this conspiracy theory. Last year people were saying there was a conspiracy against Jeff Gordon and there were all those Junior conspiracy ideas too and of course all of us know Chad is a cheater who has been caught multiple times and after the way he behaved yesterday it’s hard to really want to see Chad win another title. He is cocky, arrogant, secretive and a poor sport when things don’t go his way. Don’t forget that Biffle could be the spoiler too and he’s good at PIR and Homestead.

Well I’m of the opinion that this gas mileage stuff isn’t racing. I’ve been a JG fan for a lot of years and even if he would of won on a gas mileage thing, that’s not Racing to me. I would love to see him get those wins at the tracks he hasn’t been sucessful at but not via the fuel mileage card.

Gray area is no more. Cheating in sports has been a huge issue the last several years, steroids, performance enhancing drugs etc etc and in NASCAR the gray area. They have also instituted a drug policy as well.
