Martinsville: Have Your Say

Martinsville, Speedway

Over the final 53 laps Denny Hamlin held off Jimmie Johnson on 3 double-file restarts to win the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville.

Jimmie Johnson had won 5 of the last 6 Martinsville races and he looked to be a contender in this one. But Hamlin would deny him in the end.

Still Johnson increased his lead in the Championship standings by 118 points over Mark Martin.

Gordon Leads Early

Jeff Gordon showed strength early in the race as he bumped Martin Truex Jr out of the way on the way to the front of the pack. Gordon would later complain when Juan Pablo Montoya used the same move on him.

Still Gordon was in the lead by lap 22. But by lap 59 Jimmie Johnson would edge past Gordon for the lead after starting 15th.

Earnhardt’s Troubles Begin

Dale Earnhardt saw trouble early on in the race when he blew a right front tire. The cause for the flat tire turns out to be a melted bead on the tire caused by excessive heat build-up from the brakes.

None of Earnhardt’s teammates experienced a similar problem so it’s not clear why he was having brake and tire problems.  This would not be the last time he would have problems today.

On lap 128 Earnhardt hit the wall. Again the problem was a melted bead due to excessive brake heat. Earnhardt would go 2 laps down

By lap 163 Juan Pablo Montoya was in the lead, but by lap 1836 Denny Hamlin would be out front.

Hamlin Dominant

Denny Hamlin had the dominant car most of the day leading the most laps at 205.

By lap 251 Dale Earnhardt Jr was back on the lead lap. He would not stay there, though. The No 88 Chevrolet continued to suffer tire and brake problems.

By lap 321 Jimmie Johnson was out front and most of the remaining laps would be a battle between Hamlin and Johnson. On lap 362 Johnson and Hamlin battled side by side with Hamlin coming out on top.

Hamlin held off Jimmie Johnson on a green white checkered restart to take the win.

Why No Caution?

On the final lap John Andretti spun his car at the start-finish line. Even though Andretti’s car was sitting on the racetrack NASCAR did not throw the caution flag until the last second leaving Chad Knaus, crew chief for Jimmie Johnson, asking why?

So here’s your chance to share your opinion. What did you think about the race?

  2. as for JR. I said in a previous comment, some racers are harder on equipment than others and some can drive better.Nobody wants to see a caution flag on the last lap unless it would be a green, white checker restart, for which I’m not sure in this case.

  4. Well I feel that the reason Jr has had so many problems is that he is getting all the left overs from the other team drivers. The other 3 have good running cars and tires and here Jr has
    bad tires, engines etc.
Its like the other members dont want him to raise to the top and maybe give them competition. And his crew chiefs are ones that
just are there to sit in the seat and dont want
to make decisions. But thats just my thought.

Jr. is getting the same equipment as all the other drivers for Hendrick Motor Sports. He is just having bad racing luck.

  8. I watch and listen to Jr. on track pass. I pull up the dash board part and that allows me to watch 2 drivers at once. Jr. did not use his brakes anymore than the other drivers that I watched did. Jr. told the cc that he did not like the brakes. He was one of the few having brake problems. As for the cc, engineers, and HMS, I am toooo angry to respond politely.

I TOTALLY agree I was listening @ the track too…trust me those pretty boys @ Hendrick would not wanna hear it

Junior is just a marketing tool for HMS. I knew this when they hired him and it’s painfully obvious now.

  10. You people need to get a grip. JR is getting the same equipment as everybody else. Rick Hendricks has no reason to do otherwise. Why would he hire JR and pay him such an outreagous amount of money and then give him inferior equipment? I think you are getting just a little bit paranoid.

MARKETING MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most popular and loved driver brings in all kinds of sponsors. Let’s see Dupont wanted to scale back so….National Guard goes on Jeffie’s car. Kellogg’s and Carquest are leaving so guess what Markie gets Go Daddy! Pepsico becomes more front and center as well. This is why I said when he announced he was going to HMS he’d regret it. The same with Stewart. He’s the second most popular driver so it’s obvious Big Boy Rick wanted some more sponsors.

So sick of Johnson. I dont wont to watch the race anymore, There is no way someone could win as much as he does.

I QUESTION THE WAY JIMMY GETS THE RUN BEFORE THE FLAG COMES DOWN FOR RESTARTS ?DOES HE JUMP THE GUN OR WHAT ? HE SEEMS TO ALWAYS GET THE LEAD, HAS NASCAR WATCHED THE TIMING OR IS IT ALWAYS 100% RIGHT THAT JIMMY GETS A LEAD WEN THE FLAG COMES DOWN ?? I KNOW JOHNSON IS A GREAT DRIVER & POSSIBLY THE BEST BUT I QUESTION HIS RACE STARTS ? IS THERE ANY CHEETING GOING ON, OR AM I BLIND. HE SEEMS TO GET IN FRONT ALWAYS ?? LETS REVIEW THE STARTER FLAG ? OK

Finally, we got to watch some racing! Someone tell Jeff Gordon to quit whining. Montoya did nothing to him that he has not done to Montoya and others. AS for Jr., if it was not for bad luck, he would not have any luck at all. I agree that Nascar is very inconsistent when calling cautions.

  12. I can no longer watch a complete race. I guess that Martinsville was as close to exciting as it’s going to get. You have a bunch of whining, overpaid, spoiled brats. They are paid incredible money, travel in $10MM private jets and sleep in 1MM motor homes. And bitch.
As far as the caution flag controversy, Nascar will manage the racing any way they want. Too much heat from fans and the network to give Johnson a chance to win another one. And about JR’s bad luck. There can only be so many coincedences. I know that Hendricks is respected but if you think he would do no wrong, you better look back about 10 years and you will be educated.

You are so right about Hendrick! He don’t care if Jr wins or not, he has the most popular driver and is raking in the dough! You don’t have the LUCK (bad) Jr has had all year and there not be something or someone in the wrong!

UNTIL HE WANTS THAT BIG SALARY RAISE AND LISTEN
TO JG CRY THEN. I USED TO THANK JJ WAS A DECENT

I, like so many think Jr. is getting “leftovers” as far as parts. How many times has he started out and moved to the front only for his car to go sour and start slidding backwards. I’d love to see Jr. hook-up with Richard Childress and Tony Eury Sr. then you’d hear a lot more whining about Jr, only it would be from winning !!!

  16. The one thing I liked about the race is that their was no dominant driver all through the race. That made it more interesting and made you wonder what group of drivers would be up front next. I suppose it was all due to pit strategy. I felt bad for Jr. Seeing it was a new car and they didn’t get much practice I figured it came down to something being wrong with the car. I’m not sure how that could cause a bead to melt but if there was a brake problem or something like that it might be possible.

  18. Ahhhh, Haaaa, I think there is something fishy going on with Jr’s car. Somebody knows something….but no one is talking. Jeff is a cry baby..always was and still is…always will be…That’s they way to act when you are spoiled. Nascar…look at the last 30 seconds of the tape in the race…..

  20. Jeff Gordon is part owner of Jimmy car so why does he try to out race him on the double file start off. He would make more money to finish second it seems to me.As for Jr bless his heart, he has the worst luck . I think someone on his team don’t like him.Two flat tires the same day .Something is not right.

I hated Jr. had a bad day.it seams like something happens ever week with him.but he is still my favorite driver.I was glad Jimmy Johnson didnt win.that was a thrill for me seeing denny hamlin win. at least it didnt seem like a rerun, like ever week does.I was even wanting kyle bush to win!! not.

I am 66 years old and have been a race fan for most of those years but i’m losing my interest i’m so sick of jj is all you hear from the mc’s and how great he is there are 42 other drivers out there that deserve some repect to. althought jj is a good driver but you can’t tell me they are not cheating and nascar over looks it. it’s so funny that cautions come out to help him and if he wins this champhionship you can’t tell me it is legal and if he does i will never attend another race or watch on t.v. nascar you have got away from old racing to money taiks and b.s. walks you need to think what you are doing to the sport that us oldly’s love. I know saftey is good but give all 43 drivers their dues not just the cheaters jj and you know they are doing it but like i said money talks b.s. walks but get a life if it wasn’t for us fans there would be no sport.

  26. I was at Martinsville on Sunday and have been a JR. fan since his Daddy passed.I have come to the conclusion that JR is not smart enough to tell his crew chief what the hell is wrong with his car.He told his crew chief one time that the car was junk and had no brakes.Put it in the notebook for the next driver next year.Lance also told JR to stay out on the last caution,Jr wanted 4 tires.Lance told him he was only racing 2 guys for position and it was not worth $1400 for 4 tires. At that point JR was just out there in the way. What he needs is a old school crew chief like HARRY Hyde.JR needs to bring is Nationwide team up and quite bitching. He showed his true redneck colors Sunday to all that had a scanner on his channel.Go TONY you are my new driver.

  28. Jimmie Jonson is a good driver and HE HAS A GREAT CREW CHIEF AND THEY HAVE A GREAT CREW AND MOST IMPORTANT THEY ALL WORK AS A TEAM. They have they’re problems but get them corrected.
I feel Jr has had some bad experiences in other races some almost tragic, GIVE THE KID A BREAK. I also feel that his crew cheif should talk to Knaus, he’s not goona tell him everything but he will work with him, just like he did for the 5 team. They’ll come along but it’s not gonna happen overnite, JR JUST GIVE IT TIME.
As for Jeff, complaining it goes like this —-
what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, take it with a smile and get over it.
THERE’S NO BIGGER CRY BABIES THAN KYLE BUSH, AND EDWARDS….grammy 67
GO JIMMIE AND KNAUS AND TEAM ALLLLLL HENDRICKS
Also, how did a TOYOTA win—–NASCAR LET THEM
BY NOT HAVING A CAUTION,NOW THAT’S STRAIGHT UP
CHEATING AND THAT’S THE ONLY WAY GIBBS CAN WIN.

  32. I can’t understand why JJ, MM and JG can consistantly run in the top 10 while Junior sucks the rear. He is my favourite, never complains, never whines or cusses anyone out yet he can’t win a race..definately something smelly at HMS.. I’m in my loate 60′s and watched some of the greats and there never did seem to be the big differences in drivers as there is now. The COT car has got to go if we are to see decent racing again..I miss donuts on the doors by Dale. Safety should be first but these cookie cutter races are BORING. I didn’t even watch the end of the race and that has been a habit lately..no excitement..no racing at all..just the same few leading everyone else around and around and around the track. Come on NASCAR wake up you’re killing the sport.

Jeff is the worlds greatest race car driver in the world,,,,,,,,,,,,just ask him he will tell you and NO ONE is supposed to challenge him on the track, oh yes, it is fine if he pushes and bumps but don’t do that to him, he can walk on water don’t you know. Wake up Jeff, there are 42 other MEN out there who can drive as well or better than you………….you need to realize this, you are not untouchable.

  40. Of course Hendrick team Johnson is cheating; starting with a well tuned traction control system…Don’t say it don’t happen; I can tell you from personal knowlege and experience at Saturday night tracks that traction control was used there by the big money boys along with titanium parts and other ingenious illegal engineering…..NASCAR has the capability to find and stop this kind of equipment but Hendrick’s financial support of the hall of fame among other perks gain him the freedom of cheating he needs…Not to mention Nascar’s falling ratings and the need to make new records for the Hendricks crews…
