Phoenix Post Race Thread
November 9th, 2008 | by RacingWin |Phoenix Race Wrap Up
Your opinion counts — have your say on the race.
Was anyone really surprised that Jimmie Johnson won the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 in Phoenix. Johnson is the only one having a championship type year.
But first of all what’s up with ABC giving up the race broadcast with less than 40 laps to go. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.
Doesn’t ABC realize that not everyone has access to ESPN2. That’s no way to treat viewers after they’ve hung in with you all afternoon watching all your commercials. Way to take care of the fans ABC.
Hats off to NASCAR for being so fast on the red flag when Scott Speed was trapped underneath the No. 38 car. That could have been ugly. NASCAR did a great job.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray all had great runs — but once again no one had anything for Jimmie Johnson. Busch was giving it everything he had on the final 2 laps.
Are fans getting tired of Jimmie Johnson winning everything? If so, why doesn’t he get booed like Kyle Busch?
Johnson needs to finish 36th or better at Homestead to wrap up his 3rd consecutive championship.
What about the huge wreck after the checkered fell. I think that was the biggest wreck all day.
I wonder what Roger Penske thought about Ryan Newman giving Tony Stewart a push to get started after the red flag. At least Newman has only one more ride in Penske’s car, then he goes to drive for Stewart.
Is there anything you saw. A great move, or something really stupid. Here’s your chance have your say on the race. What do you say?

Leaving ABC when the race had so few laps left was like watching a tied basketball or baseball game in the final playoffs. Switching for funniest videos? I saw nothing humorous about the videos. Dumb and dumber.

ABC leaving the race high and dry with so little laps to go was just unbelievable, especially for the people who don’t have cable. They are very disrespectful to the fans that pay their salary. They wouldnt do that with the NFL.

PLEASE DO NOT WATCH ABC AGAIN……PLEASE! If everyone would protect and tune in other channels ABC will get rid of those dumb idiots they now have in charge; just like those dumb stupid videos they watch and broadcast. Let them keep running the dumb, stupid videos while we watch more useful fun-loving and All-American TV. We always buy everything NASCAR advertises…..but, no more! Why? Because they are on ABC! DO NOT WATCH ABC. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING SOLD ON ABC. THANK YOU AMERICA

I wish ABC & all major networks were disqualified from having NASCAR. They never follow thru. Thank God we have satellite and can move over but what a let down for fans who don’t!! Keep it on ESPN or Speed entirely. Let them have the NFL as the networks seem to be able to keep them on forever IF that is what it takes. When we travel we have the problem as our satellite only picks up ESPN & Speed and it makes me very angry also. Let’s all vote to make FOX, ABC & and other major network not eligible for any RACE!!!!!!!!!!

Are millions of fans fed up with NASCAR like i am in reference to some of their decisions ? Like today at Phoenix they had a big wreck in the middle of the race so NASCAR red flagged the race to clean up the track which was the right thing to do even though they could have ran many laps under caution. Then with about 10 laps to go they have another cautionn but they let them run 8 laps or so under caution so they could have a green, white, checkered flag finish which NASCAR must think is exciting but it is not and it cheats the fans out of the big bucks they have paid to see a full race and not a two lap shoot out ?

It wasn’t very professional to change channels at the end of the race. There are a lot things that I don’t understand, like why the only cars not having any problems are JJ and the CE. There is absolutly something going on in those garages and I would like to know what it is. Newman pushing Stewart to start his car was sportmanship, I think. I also wonder why Jr’s car always goes away. Why aren’t all the Hendricks cars set up the same way?

We all felt so sorry for her because she spent so much to reciprocate by having all this at her place when it was on ABC because she is always going to others who have cable. The first part of watching the race but when they turned it over to ESPN2 at 7:30 we got a blank screen. I called Comcast about this matter and they said that everyone in our area was having problems getting the rest of the race. They said it was an internal problem. I think ABC did us wrong by not finishing the race on that channel. If it was a football, baseball, golf, hockey they would of finished. We need to get rid of ABC for televising races unless they play the whole race. I really wanted to see the ending of the race. At least now I can get some of the updates from the Speed Channel, they would never cut a race short.

when Dale Jr. was running 4th and 5th, he was 8th in points, then he ended up finishing 6th, and drops to 10th in points? Does Nascar change the points system during the race or what.
Dale Jr. stayed pretty much in the top 5 most of the race, then Denny Hamlin passes him in the last part of the race and ends up in 10th? Maybe its just me, but I don’t think Nascar can keep track very well of thier own points system. What do you think of it?

NASCAR took the race from poor young Ragan Smith and gave it to Tony Stewart when Tony honestly came in second and he knew it. Tony was shocked NASCAR gave him the race; why? Because NASCAR has crooked officials and is no long the exciting and honest race it has been.

I for one do not watch anything on ABC, CBS nor NBC because they were so bias on the election. I do have AT&T U-verse so I can watch almost anything. Only trouble when you record a program it turns off with the end of their channel programming. It does not stay tuned if a race delay or rain or channel changing takes place. When I used to have Version Fios I would program at least 1 hour after a scheduled race which would take care of the problem. I agree with most of the responses to this problem, let’s just stick with FOX.

If I was running NASCAR, I would tell ABC thanks for pissing off our fans even more. Then I would pick up the phone, call FOX and say “Boo-Ga-Dee, Boo-Ga-Dee lets go racin boys” & wake up DIGGER while your at it. NASCAR needs to step up & tell ABC that it’s bad enough NASCAR is struggling with sponsorships for most of the teams for next year as it is & does ABC think by cutting the race with less than 40 laps to go is going to make sponsors wanna sign up knowing there product or ads might not make it to air. This was the second last race of the year. Just imagine if this was Homestead and they pulled that stunt. NASCAR is trying to find ways to bring back the fans and make NASCAR more exciting. Cutting the second last race of the season off to put on Funny Video’s is just plain stupid. If NASCAR doesn’t step up and do something to ABC for this. Then I have just one more comment for NASCAR. “LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO “CART”

Nascar needs to be on a channel where they won’t be switched off just cause the race didn’t end in the allotted time. I miss recorded plenty of programs that were delayed because one game or sporting event did not end as scheduled and the program that was to follow was up to an hour late in starting. If the networks want to be that way they should not get to have the best sport NASCAR!

Tina, the reason that Jr ended up 10th in the points and not 8th at the end was because even though Jr moved up in position, so did the other drivers he was chasing in the points, which puts them ahead of Jr in points, hope that makes sense. As far as dumbest moves of the day, I have to say it was the 88 team yet again, I am a huge Jr fan but don’t get some of the calls they make, if you listened to Hotpass, Jr said to Tony Jr he didn’t understand why they went the direction they did, when they tried that in practice and it didn’t work, so why did they do it in the race? He commented again at the end of the race on Hotpass that same thing. I just don’t get why they did that, if it didn’t work that weekend in practice why the heck would they think it would work in the race???

I heard the same thing on hot pass and i think that the crew is trying to still get a handle on this new car. They are looking ahead to next season already and other than a win there’s really nothing left to do but experiment. These are tracks that they’ll run next year so the more stuff that they can try will be better for the team next year. I may be wrong but it makes sense to me.

I have been a jimmie johnson fan since he started.I don’t think you can be immune to the class he and the entire organization has shown.I ,for one, don’t think NASCAR should punish brains and organization on any team.I do think that the cheating has gone too far.start parking the entire team and suspend them for the next race.I don’t care who the team is,do it.Maybe the punishment sould be 3 races up to the chase and one race during the chase for chase drivers. The 3 race penalty should apply to all non chase drivers during the chase.I don’t know NASCAR’S costs for random inspections, but all drivers should be subject to inspections after each race.I also think the point system should be based on finish positions and eliminate points for 1 lap led and most points led.A good driver can finish 2nd and earn more points than the winning driver and possibly win a championship.Let’s be fair to all.

I THINK THAT NASCAR NEEDS TO DROP ABC BECAUSE THAT WAS UNCALLED FOR AT THE END OF THE RACE.NASCAR HAS TO RESPECT THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THE SPORT NOT THE MONEY BAGS THAT WANT TO CONTROL IT. AND THAT GOES FOR NASCAR REP’S. AS WELL AS THE OTHERS DON’T WORRY WHO BUMPED WHO THAT’S RACIN AND THE DAM FINES ARE GARBAGE ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY.ALOT OF PEOPLE I KNOW IS FEDUP WITH THE WAY NASCAR IS RUNNING THE SHOW.SO THEY BETTER GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER BEFORE IT GOES BY THE WAY.

Well, hello, again, YES, that was something, them leaving the air, I thought something was wrong with my set, however, I should have known better. It ALL BOILS DOWN TO THE FACT THAT ABC WANTED MORE MONEY AND NASCAR WOULD’NT PAY UP….. Anyway,I HAD CABLE ALONG TIME AGO AND EVERYTHING I WANTED TO WATCH, WAS A PAY-PER VIEW, THEN WHEN YOU GOT THERE—-THE MACHINES (WHICH UNBEKNOWINGS TO YOU)WERE BROKE,NO PLUGS, BLAH,BLAH, BLAH. SO, I AM A HAPPY CAMPER NOW BECAUSE I HAVE DIRECT TV, SO I
SWITCHED AND I HAVE THE NFL,SPEED VISION AND IT DOESN’T COST ME A PAY PERVIEW AND I GET EVERYTHING I LIKE FOR LESS——I MUST ADD THAT I GET MORE CHANNELS, TOO. SO GET A GRIP AND GET DIRECT TV….For those of you who have a truck, camper, or car, you can put a receiver in there for $5.00 extra dollars, if you have the connections, of course, the wire hookups run different prices, depending on how much you already have.
About Jimmie Johnson, I COULD’NT THINK OF A BETTER CANDIDATE OTHER THAN JUNIOR FOR CHAMPION.
He has a nice personality, gets along with his orther drivers, including Jeff, haha and HAS A GREAT CREW CHIEF,KNAUS,what more could you ask for. Although I do like JEFF (31)AND HE WOULD BE A GOOD CHAMPION, ALSO.
SO I LEAVE YOU GUYS AND GALS WITH THIS NOTE—-GET DIRECT TV.. good luck to Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team. grammy 66

I HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO SAY, ALSO IT WAS NOT MONTOYA, IT WAS KENNSETH AND HE SHOULD BE FINED. HE HAS A BAD ATTITUDE, I REMEMBER ONE RACE WHERE JR WAS DOWN A LAP AND HE WOULDN’T LET HIM BY…. GIVE ME A BREAK, WE DON’T NEED HIM AS A CHAMPION, OR KYLE BUSH, AND LET’S ADD CARL EDWARDS–BOOHOO BOOHOO, I BELIEVE THOSE 3 SHOULD BE CALLED THE BOOHOO BOYS. grammy 66

What’s the deal????Does ESPN own ABC??? Tonite on NASCAR NOW on ESPN they issued a disclaimer stating that they gave us plenty of warning that they were going to change channels. They brushed off the people who don’t have cable like they were nonexistent….which they are to the station owner.

ABC and ESPN are both owned by The Walt Disney Company.

Well, everyone seems to have pretty much the same gripe and rightfully so. I have ESPN2 and got to see the end of the race but I know how you felt because when Ike hit and abig part of the nation was without power, well Cincinnati got hit pretty good. Out in Indiana where I live we got the power back on shortly but the ABC affiliate in Cincinnati chose to show the same thing over and over during the entire race. I too think this should be televised to the fullest unless of course there would be a National Disaster. Now, my question is…Who actually reads these complaints. Does Nascar and if they do, do they care? I would hope there would be some kind of link directly into Nascar especially since the fans are what is making them wealthy.
If anybody knows how to contact, sign a petition or whatever, please post it so that we can get the programming we deserve. What other sporting event besides the Super Bowl has such a vast number of people in attendance as the races? There was only 84 hits on this site since Sunday. Perhaps the change should start here…
Yes, I am sick to death of Jimmie Johnson but I might add, I am not surprised. All we heard all season by the sportscasters was a three-peat for Johnson. He was 3rd in points after Richmond, 2nd after New Hampshire and Dover and 1st the rest of the way. I believe he will continue to win as long as Chad Knaus works the system. We all know he is not beyond cheating to win.
Johnson is a good driver I will give him that but there are a lot of very good drivers in the field every week. If you dont agree with what I am saying, take a look at the 18. Seems he couldn’t lose during the season but for some reason or other (Right) he fell apart in the chase. Can anyone explain that? All you Jimmie Johnson fans don’t go fanatic on me but I think it was fixed and they threw the flip-flop boy in there just to make it look good. How surprised are we going to be when the 48 wins it all Sunday?
AND THAT IS MY OPINION….

ABC would have never cut off a football game!
Some of us don’t get ESPN and this is our only source of viewing the race. Extremely disappointed…
