Chevy Says No to NASCAR

If NASCAR wants to put more fans in the grandstands and in front of their TVs they need to make the cars that win on Sunday look more like the cars you can actually buy on Monday.

They have at least taken steps in the right direction. The wing is gone and the spoiler is back. Next year in the Nationwide Series Ford plans to race a Mustang and Dodge is bringing a Challenger. There is talk that those same cars could also come to Sprint Cup.

Changes to the front end on Sprint Cup race cars seem to be all but a done deal.

Chevy just doesn’t get it, though. They are planning on racing an Impala, when they could be bringing a Camaro.

The car companies have a big say in what races on the track. If Chevy would race a Camaro it would bring some added excitement to racing and help sell more cars for Chevrolet. A Camaro would be good for NASCAR and Chevrolet.

But Chevy is at least keeping an open mind and listening to race fans who can’t believe that GM would pass on the opportunity to race the Camaro GM racing boss Pat Suhy said “I’ll never say never” when asked about the possibility of a Camaro in NASCAR. But so far the word from GM to NASCAR and race fans everywhere is no.

With Mustang, Camaro and Challenger to racing in the Sprint Cup Series – with bodywork that actually looks like the cars down the street in the showroom fans would become more engaged with NASCAR.

There is no Ford vs. Chevy rivalry any more. That’s because no one can tell them apart on the race track. Come on NASCAR – give us our stock cars back.

I know you have a lot of smart engineers working in your R&D Facility in Charlotte. Together with the automaker engineers I know you can come up with a car that looks like a stock car and still keep the cars even aerodynamically.

Would a Camaro, a Mustang, a Challenger and Toyota’s new sports car make NASCAR more exciting for you? Would you be more likely to buy one?

  10. Probably not, I enjoy stock car racing. I consider the above mentioned cars as sports cars. When I think of the cost of converting one of those to meet safety standards it bogles my mind. If it wasn’t for NASCAR rules that have all cars measure the same etc., they wouldnt all look alike at high speeds. I also understand that some of the shops have come along way with getting next years cars ready. Would the spoiler and those flaps keep those cars on the ground? I have so many questions and I will fully admit to being stubborn. I prefer my driver in a full size car. This is a family sport, those cars are not family cars.

  16. Come on Chevy, get with the program!!! Impala’s were the muscle cars of the early ’60′s, now they’re just a family sedan and is not a race car. If ya wanna sell them on Monday, ya gotta race them on Sunday. The ‘Stangs and Challengers are gonna leave those Impalas in the dust. Now, if you put a ‘Cammie’ in the mix, we’ll have some good racing again.

  20. My problem with NASCAR is not what the cars look like but why some cars are even at the track. If NASCAR makes ever car that tries to qualify have a full crew
and ever thing it takes to run a full race then we would not have to watch the
start and park cars taking a good cars place.

When is NASCAR gonna wake up , was at Michigan Last week when someone gets a big lead out comes a caution but no one shows any debri, someone hits the wall caution, they have screwed up racing so much from the 90′s it is not racing anymore I hate to say it but if EARNHARD Sr. was still it would be 10 times more exciting he would tell NASCAR how it is and they would listen , no one today has any balls to stand up to NASCAR and its HEAD IDIOTS , and CHEVY get with it and race a CAMARO you want to sell cars people would but what wins on Sunday no young person wants to but an Impala till they retire and become old folks wake up !!!!!!

    [Reply]

Sorry, but I look at this in a different light…..I grew up with my father owning nothing but a Chevy. We have ALWAYS had a Chevy in the family. I still drive my 2002 Monte Carlo S/S (on the street of course) and still can’t understand why NASCAR stopped running them on the track. Beside, it’s an American made car and I believe we need to keep the car makers here in the god old USA.
People buy cars from other countries because of the price is lower, but they are junk and un-American!

I believe Chevy should run the Camaro if they are going to make any changes !!!!

I have Ben a nascar fan for 40 yrs and each year it seems to be getting more and more tame.I do like the idea of ford chevy and dodge racing there own product and having some good old fashion rivieres. Each week huge numbers of people are hoping to see a good race but most of the time the highest paid drivers in the world ride around until there is about 25 laps left and then start racing.

  38. Well, It’s not so screwed up that I’ll watch soccer! It will never get that bad… I”d just as soon watch American Idol! It would be nice to see something on the track that resembles what’s in the showroom. As much trouble as GM and Nascar are in $$$-wise (for similar reasons….) You’d think it would be in both of their best interests to get together here!

  42. All of this chatter is interesting about Ford and Dodge bringing the Mustang and Challenger to NATIONWIDE next year while Chevy is planning on racing the Impala. In the CUP SERIES what exactly makes a car a Ford or Chevy anyway; well I looked it up. Car companies, according to the source, contribute only parts and design for the engines. “The bodies of the cars are actually regulated by NASCAR, making the exact shape of each car identical–especially since the inception of the “Car of Tomorrow.” The cars are painted to resemble the appearance of their manufacturer’s brand, but that is more cosmetic than anything.” http://www.ehow.com/about_6169757_nascar-chevy-vs_-ford.html
So what is the story here really?

  44. RACIN’ IS NOT A SHOW IT’S A COMPETITION. IF I WANT TO SEE A SHOW I’LL GO TO THE MOVIES.

Racing isn’t any fun if it is contrived to achieve a certain out come.

I’d like to see Nascar out of the parts business. Sure you need standards for safety purposes but the day of “who can build the best car is gone”. Today you just get a matchbox toy and let Nascar sell you the parts.

Yes I would like to see a Camaro on the track with the best engine the mechanics can build for their teams. If they don’t win or place well then they can go back to the drawing board.

I can’t relate to a four door front wheel drive grocery getter as a performance car nor do I want to run out to the nearest Chevy dealer and buy one.I like the fact that Dodge,Ford & finally Chevy have came out with the 2 door muscle cars.I have been looking at the Camaro and like it a lot.So come on Chevy and Nascar get with it give us something to be excited and able to brag about on Mondays. Give us what we want.

  50. At firsy glance it sounded exciting, buy since the advent of the C.O.T. the Sprint Cup has become nothing more than a “Spec Car’ series. Other sanctioning bodies usually relegate the spec cars to the support races to the main events.
NASCAR policy seems to be if you show any imagination in car prep you get a 12 race banishment and a hefty fine!

  60. I like NASCAR racing, I like the rivalry between teams I like the challenge to be the one and only car/team in the winners circle, but I also would like to see which car is the best in it’s field. Yes the sports cars on the street are not race cars, but in my generation we gave honors to the top dog on the street.
Maybe a muscle race or two thrown in during the season would sooth us old farts as the currant race cars try to prove who the best team/shop is.
I give every man his day, but I would like to see a muscle car race sponsored event now and again.

  62. Jimbo, that is an excellent idea. My husband and I used to be pit crew for our son who drove a 1971 Camaro with a 454 in it. I also remember where we used to hold our challenge races to name top dog. I think we had more fun in the old days. My son still has that Camaro, but he won’t let me drive it.

Given Camero’s are not even built by US workers, that may be tha case anyway!

  66. I have loved watching nascar racing for many (MANY) years along with my auto racing friends.Of recent years it seems the best way to spell Nascar would be
“BOREING” The speeds are exciting, the thought of all those moving parts holding together @ 10000 plus rpm, thats remarkable, not knowing what kind of car is in the race untill you get close enough to read the name is unremarkable!
Remember when Nascar was “association of stock cars” Well nascar let its greed take over(there is a degree of stupidity in greed) Unless Nascar makes some changes like a Ford is And looks like a Ford, A Chevy a Chevy,Dadge a Dodge Etc. many of us will find other ways of enjoying auto racing. Finally I agree with one of the other comments…Toyotas just do not belong in Nascar racing!!!
