Was Jeff Gordon Being Raced Too Hard?

I’m always puzzled when a race car driver complains that another driver is racing him too hard.

Juan Pablo Montoya was faster than Jeff Gordon at one point in Sunday’s race – but Gordon didn’t want to give up the position. Gordon certainly didn’t owe it to Montoya to move out of the way. But Montoya didn’t do anything wrong when he knocked on Gordon’s bumper either.

After a few bumps Montoya got to the inside of Gordon and the two traded some more paint side by side. By that time Montoya had nowhere to go but into the side of Gordon. The 42 of Montoya was all the way down against the yellow curb. Montoya was literally squeezed as far as he could go and Gordon refused to give him racing room even though Montoya already had the position alongside Gordon.

Montoya didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t wreck him. He didn’t spin him. He simply moved a slower car that refused to move on its own.

Gordon flatly told his crew chief he was extremely angry with Montoya.  But he had nothing to be upset about. What happened was just racing. Typical hard short track racing.

It’s a move that Gordon himself has used many times before. But when it happens to him then he is quick to claim someone is racing him too hard – or not racing him the right way.

Jeff Gordon has no room to complain on this one.

    6. Come on, Jeff..you know better. I see you’re reason for frustration, but don’t take it out on cars that challenge you for position. If you would’ve given him 6 inches, you wouldn’t have been brushed. You squeeze down on somebody in any turn,(especially Martinsville), who’s faster than you, you’re most likely going to get hit..that’s physics, not driver ability or lack of. You’re good enough to return the favor .. just bide your time….quietly.

    8. The way I look at it rubbin’ is racing. I am sure that Montoya was crying just as much as Jeff. Not only that but Jeff has done the same exact thing Montoya was doing in early years. Now if we could get Jr. to race like that I bet he would start winning more races, come on Rick talk to Jr. and tell him to take it to a higher level of racing.

Hey come on Jeff!Stop the lip smacking and drive man.It’s Chase time and everybody is going to be bumping and going for the positions,you know how it is this far into the season!If Montoya wasn’t in the Chase then you would have a reason to complain,but he is.You will probably do it before the season is over yourself if someone is holding you up.Stop complaining and just freaking race man.Yes,I am a Gordon fan from his rookie year,but hey!When you have no reason to complain then why fuss?GO GORDON!!     15. Oh, for goodness sake, Jeff, that’s just good ole racing and what goes around comes around as they say. You have certainly brushed a few “fenders” in your time. I agree with Ron who wrote he wished Jr. would start racing like that, be a little more aggressive and maybe things would change for him. I’m still the oldest Jr. fan I’m sure and will continue to be, whatever he does…..!!!!!

    19. I can’t believe Jeff even complained but he as most of the drivers have become are all big babies now days. Even Stewart has become a patsy.Jeff used to race everyone hard but not anymore. I have been a big Gordon and Stewart fan but boy they sure don’t race as hard as they used to–especially when it comes to Jimmie and Mark. Teammate or not you are paid to WIN races and RACE! Not ride around and gripe when someone races you hard.

    23. I heard Montoya on the radio in his car saying that he was going to take out Gordon if he got the chance. Too bad Montoya wasn’t around to race Dale, Sr. – Dale could have shown Montoya what real pushing and shoving was!!! Dale, Jr. – you are still No. 1 in my bood and always will be.     27. I agree that it’s short track racing, but Montoya, in the past few races, has gotten very egressive with all the drivers in the past few weeks, somebody is gonna get tired of him doing that and they’ll put him in the wall, he needs to cool it and just drive by them, if he’s got the car. Also, why did NASCAR not bring out a caution when Jr.’s tire went down the last time, they throw cautions for everything else, that’s when Jr. got down the 4 laps and didn’t have time to make them up. I’m more convinced than ever that somebody on Jr.s crew is sabotaging Jr. car, it’s every week something goes wrong and nothing happpens to Jimmie, Jeff, or Mark’s cars, something is mighty fishy, no wonder Jr. is so upset, I would be too. Love ya, Junebug, keep your chin up, we’re behind ya!!!!!

Dont go writeing things about some one crying, there is for sure that something is going on in the hendricks team, why is it that Dale jrs car is always at the back of the pack, and the rest of the drivers are at the front, why is some cars faster then the others, when you drive as a team, all cars should bw equal to each other, they should be able to run as a team, so if you got anything to say, you got my web site, talk to me and not behind my back. ive only been on this earth 65 years, ive been involved in raceing in my life time, when something is not right, i speak the truth, i dont hold back, i come right out and speak my mind, so from now on, speak to me.

    32. It didn’t lok too out of place the way these two were racing. They both finished pretty good so what’s the problem.
    I love Dale Jr. He deserves a pat on the back for keeping on the track after all the crap he went through. What on earth was up with all the bad tires?
    Keep the faith Jr. You must love the sport to keep on keeping on. It takes a lot to keep going when things keep falling apart. You most definately have paid your dues and without a doubt you have the heart of a winner.

    47. I miss Dale Earnhardt. He was a racer and a good one who knew how to race like a man. Today, all they do is cry and complain. I am a Jr. fan and hope next year will be a better year for him and hopefully he ll get to be like his daddy, racing hard and not worrying about what other people are saying.

    48. Gordon chopped Juan down on the curb what was Juan supposed to do? This is the same crap his teammate Mr. Vanilla Johnson has used too. He pinches people all the time. Remember Stewart at Atlanta a few years back. Pinched him up in the wall.Then the slowing down and brake checking that ruined Mark’s car last week as well as JPM. That is why JPM is peeved at him more than anything.I like Jeff don’t get me wrong but he can be dirty too and so can Mr. Johnson. They all can be it’s called RACING folks. Suck it up and DRIVE!

    50. Oh yes he’s whined about June! Especially on the RP tracks. This weekend I can’t wait to see June and Smoke hook up and go to the front. Maybe bring Mark and a few others with them as long as it’s not the 48. Like Mikey would love to see him run up front for awhile and even be there at the end.     51. It’s called it’s all about marketing dear!That was all Hendrick wanted Junior for and why he’s backed Stewart. They are the two most popular drivers in NASCAR and it brings in sponsor money. Look how Go Daddy was convienently taken to Mark for next year or how they all wear Adidas now including SHR drivers. Junior is the red headed step child like Brian Vickers was and then Casey Mears. Personally I wish Smoke, Junior and Harvick as well as Newman would team up with RC and be a satellite of RCR. That could happen if Smoke begins to see the writing on the wall that he may not be as successful because he’s just a marketing tool.

    52. You know I agree with you a lot. I think Natiowide does a lot of short tracks and their races aren’t too long. I think what hurts Nationwide is all the cup drivers coming over and picking on the Nationwide only drivers. Brad got that first hand and that is why he’s developed the attitude to dump them all and not take their crap. Races are too long and get drawn out by cautions for “Jacques Debris”.I say start racing and stop driving around like the CWTS! Eldora etc.

    55. I really wonder what is happening with Jr’s car? He’s driving for the best team in Nascar, suppose to have the best of everything,motors ,cars etc, yet his 3 team mates hardly ever have any problems with there cars.There is definately something wrong with that Picture.If the set-up is suppose to be exactly the same for all cars, why is his not even able to finish a race, or always so close to the end everytime? Even Tony Stewart, & Ryan Newman use Hendricks motors etc, they have better cars.Wh is it 5 cars out of 6 don’t have many problems, & 1 consistantly falls a part in one way, or another.Is it a conspiracy thing going on, or what???
