Mark Martin Wins While Montoya Goes Home Mad

2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, New Hampshire

For 300 laps Sunday afternoon tempers flared, aggression showed and Mark Martin proved that he was on a Championship run by winning the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and holding on to the Sprint Cup Championship points lead.

But 2nd place Juan Pablo Montoya felt Martin had unfairly held him up.

The win gave Martin 5 victories so far in the season – the most of all drivers.

40th Win for Martin

“That’s a big deal.  I don’t get around this place that well,” said Martin. It’s also pretty cool, when we left Michigan, I don’t know how many races was the total race.  This is 40,” said Martin, referring to his 40th Sprint Cup win.

Martin held a huge lead late in the race with just 24 laps to go whena  late race debris caution was called by NASCAR. The caution flag bunched the field back up and made for some interesting racing. But I never saw the debris – even though it took several trucks to clean it up.

From there Martin held on to the lead through several more caution flags.

With 6 laps to go the caution flag flew due to a spin by A.J. Allmendinger following contact by Marcos Ambrose. Martin held of a charge on the restart by Juan Pablo Montoya.

With 13 laps to go Martin held off Kurt Busch on another restart to keep the race lead.

On the final lap A.J. Allmendinger spun the No. 44 Dodge on the front stretch. This time NASCAR was not so quick to pit the Caution Flag out. The race stayed green until Martin was almost back to the finish line – even though Allmendinger was still sitting on the race track for most of the final lap.

Dale Jr Crash

Dale Earnhardt Jr went a long way to silence his critics by starting 23rd and systematically climbing as high as 2nd place.

The No. 88 Chevrolet was running in 4th position when he spun following contact from David Reutimann’s No. 00 Toyota. Earnhardt had harsh words for Reutimann following the late race crash that put Earnhardt into the wall and out of the race.

I’m pretty disappointed,” said Earnhardt

“Some people you just can’t race side by side with,” said Earnhardt as he criticized David Reutimann for causing the wreck. “ We were probably one of the best cars here the 00 can’t hold his line. He went down to the bottom of the corner, Lost it, run into the side of my car and spun me out came up and spin me out I know that he can’t hold his line and I should have known that, but I’ve got to run hard and try to win.”

“David just run out of talent down there,” said Junior on a final note.

Chase contender Kasey Kahne finished 38th after suffering a catastrophic engine failure on lap 66.

The engine failure occurred at a critical time for Kahne. Not only was it the first race of the Chase – but it was just days after Richard Petty Motorsports announced it was closing its engine shop and merging with Yates Racing to field Fords in 2010. The move will leave many RPM engine shop employees out of work.

Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin are both 35 points behind Mark Martin in the standings. But the race left Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne more than 100 points behind the leader. That’s a lot of ground to make up in 9 races.

Juan Pablo Montoya was unhappy with Mark Martin after the race. Montoya felt that Martin slowed in the apex of the corner to prevent Montoya from passing.

“He screwed me,” said Montoya after climbing from his car on pit road.

“David just run out of talent down there.” ~ Dale Earnhardt Jr

“He always runs very clean, so I was kind of surprised when he did that,” Montoya continued from the media center after the race.  “I know it’s the Chase and everything, but you just learn from it.  I would have done the same thing.  I think you’ve got to do it to somebody that you trust is not going to knock you out, because I think if I would have done ‑‑ if the second place guy wasn’t me, I think somebody else would have been a little bit more aggressive.  But you learn from it.  It’s one of those deals that you’ve got to do what it takes, and he did.”

“You can read into that what you want, said Mark Martin in response. “But my first instinct to answer that question would be, yeah, I stopped compared to how fast his car was going. I fought for that race.”

I am still amazed when drivers complain that other racers make it hard for them to pass or win. I thought that was what racing was all about. Hard racing.

Penalty coming for Busch

Kyle Busch failed post race tech inspection. His No. 18 Toyota was too low on the left front.

  2. Montoya is mad because Martin slowed down to stop him from passing. Gee. That’s racin’, Juan Pablo. Suck it up. Congrats to MM for a fine job. Would love to see him take the Chase and be the Champion he deserves to be. And Dale, Jr., you have a right to be mad. The double zero has taken you out of the race twice this year (that I know of), and both times it was just poor judgment on his part. Glad to see you running in the top 5 again. Go Jr.!

  6. Montoya drove more aggresive than any other did today. Mark was there to win just like he was. I think Pablo better watch out there are as many fans for him as Dale Jr. has also every driver always respects Mark when they speak about him GO MARK

  8. It’s the same old song for Juan Pablo. Whenever he has a problem he has to cry about how unfair the other drivers are. I would love to view a race where each drive took credit for their own problems.

  14. Just as I was starting to think Montoya just might be worthy of a little respect ,he has to run his mouth with these crybaby remarks.Did he realize who he was criticizing? The man, Mark Martin, the man who has lost lots of races simply because he ALWAYS RACES YOU CLEAN.
    G0-GO-GO MARK
Montoya, you just went to the bottom of the RESPECT LIST!

  16. JR. had a good car today he proved he can drive.
I wish he would get some luck though, seems like if he didn’t have bad luck he wouldn’t have luck at all.
Although his team has progressed will lately it just doesn’t show on the stats yet.
    He’ll win soon!!!
And Montoya has no class,He now needs to figure out how to race people. Not just driving around the track fast.

Call a spade a spade, like you did tonite! Remeber, nice guys finish last. Now go get some revenge on the 00 an the 18! They both got it comong!

  24. Montoya, why don’t you just go back to the open wheel series where all your cry-baby friends are. When you get a little bigger in some physical areas then come back, or not. If ya can’t hamg with the big boys, don’t keep trying.

  26. I lost respect for Juan Montoya today because of his remarks regarding Mark. He said himself earlier in the broadcast that when he needed help or had questions, he’d go ask Mark.
What a slap in the face later! Mark is one of the cleanest drivers I’ve ever watched. Think Mr. Montoya still has lots to learn about NASCAR. One crybaby in this sport is enough!

  28. Dale Jr was having such a good race and I just knew the way they were driving that someone was going to take him out of it. It just seems that is the way 2009 has gone for him. Go Jr.

  31. Fast Track on Mon, 21st Sep 2009 1:58 am
  32. Juan Pablo Montoya is a cry baby, pure and simple. Mark Martin is a class act and a true gentleman. If he slowed Monyoya up and kept him from winning the race on the low side of the rece track he should have done something about it.There’s more than one groove on that race track. Thing is, the #5 was too fast & Montoya couldn’t get his nose under Mark’s DS quarter panel on the low side of the track for the pass. If he wants to bitch that Mark wouldn’t let him pass why did he not go to the high side and pass him there? The race was his to win, and he couldn’t pull it off and has no one to blame but himself. In Montoya’s defense he could have turned Mark and took the lead that way as well, but he raced Mark clean.

Reutimann wrecking Jr. as much as everybody hates it, and me more than anyone else, i carefully viewed the replay of the incident. It clearly reveals that the Michael Waltrip Racing’s Toyota being piloted by Ruttiman was backing out of the throttle as well. Reutimann does not have a bad rep of being a “Kyle Busch” type of driver. By the way, the audio on the .mpeg you can hear Jr. get out of the throttle just before being tagged and spun into the wall by Reutimann. The good thing here is, no one was hurt. By the way, they really need to can the COT, it’s JUNK. Ill handling, badly designed spoiler and front splitter (Tire Shredder) NasCar, get rid of this car before it kills someone. We all saw how safe the car was when Carl Edwards went airbourne and into the fence with hundreds of pieces of shrapnel flying into the crowd not to mention Edward’s could have been killed quite easily. The fences at most NasCar sanctioned tracks have the same cables and fence wire they had when they were originally built, now that’s BS. They should Stress Test these cables and inspect the fences before we wind up with a car in the grand stands. And for the love of God, Good Year should start providing some decent tires that can stick to the race tracks. NasCar should not dictate which brand of tires race teams improvise, if they want to run the goodyears, cool. If not there’s always Hoosier & Michilin.

Jr. WILL be back and he will be a contender again, don’t worry about that. I think Rick’s decision to change out Tony Eury Jr. For Lance McGrew was a wise move, the results speak for themselves. Mark Martin & myself are the exact same age, he’s such a gentleman i would love to see him win the Cup. If anybody deserves it, it’s him. The Hendrick’s camp will prevail in the end, make no mistake.

Stay tuned in. Your at the cross roads of your life, don’t make the wrong turn!

  34. Dale Jr, you have every right to be mad as hell with Reutimann!!!!! You had been GREAT all those laps and to end like this. I think you showed how good you can race today, when you have a good car. Of course you are good all the time for me and I know you are a great driver! So if you people out there that just want to say ugly comments, go to Pablo’s site!! He is a big mouth crybaby, sore loser and poor excuse for a driver. He does not have any respect for anyone. It’s always someone else to blame if he loses, if you can’t take the heat go somewhere else, anywhere. Mark you ran a great clean race as always!! Go Jr #88!!

JR.IS HAVING A BAD YEAR BUT THAT IS GOING TO CHANCE SOON IN ABOUT 9 RACES. NEXT SEASON YOU WILL SEE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT. KYLE BUSH AND HIS BUNCH IS GETTING ARROUND NASCAR RULES SOMEWAY AND NASCAR NEEDS TO DIG DEEP INTO THIS. I WILL SAY MONTOYA IS A GOOD DRIVER AND IN OPEN WHEEL HE WAS GREAT. MUST GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR THAT,BUT HE NEEDS NOT GET ARROUND BUSH,THINGS DO RUB OFF ON YOU. MARTIN I HOPE WINS THE NEXT NINE, HE SHOULD WIN AND GET HIS DUE FOR ALL HIS WINS THIS YEAR AND IN THE PAST.

  58. Is it any wonder why Montoya’s has a nickname ” One Problem Montoya”? He is nothing but a big cry baby just like Kylie Busch. They both can’t stand it when they lose. They have to throw a temper tamtrum. Maybe they both need a pacifer. They both need go grow some brass ones..if they want to run with the big drivers! Hey Montoya..if you can’t stand the heat in NASCAR…there is always driving go carts!

  60. I agree with Mark’s comment after the race. He was there to win the race same as 42 other cars. JPM is starting to sound like Kyle with his whining. As for Dale, great run, to bad 00 ran out of talent and wrecked him. I think he had one of the fastest cars on the track Sunday and then to have it end like that is really disappointing. Even my 5 year old grandson had to call me to complain about the 00 wrecking Dale. Next week will be better, he has been getting better for weeks now. Just has to stay out of trouble for dumb drivers!

  61. mamadew88 on Mon, 21st Sep 2009 10:34 am
  62. First and foremost, I was sooooo mad when the 00 (I choke when I have to even say his name) took our Jr. out of the race when he was doing so well. Just because you “win” a race due to a rain-out doesn’t make you a great driver and chase winner. Junior has more years experience in his little pinkie than David has in his whole body. All I can say to “00″, is you have no more fans in NASCAR along with your hotheaded buddy Montoya who is just as reckless!

  63. Dave Bowles on Mon, 21st Sep 2009 10:42 am
  64. Montoya knows the score. The “Block” going to the finish line is a time honored tactic that I have seen all my life. 1st place wins and pays the “Lions” share of the purse. There is nothing unfair about protecting the lead. On the open road you can’t take a lane of traffic if the person who “owns” that lane is ahead of you….DUH…..

“I would have done the same thing. I think you’ve got to do it to somebody that you trust is not going to knock you out” JPM in own words.

There in lies the conundrum, the word “TRUST”. Kyle Bush tried to block a few months ago with such intensity the IDIOT lost control and put himself in the wall and lost big time, he could have won more money in 2nd than where he did. “You can’t fix stupid and arrogance combined”.

If you don’t have the car with the ponies under the hood, and the “TALENT” to use them without “screwing up” everyone else in the process hold your ground and take the money/points, and run with it.

  68. Is Montoya the new Kyle crybaby Bush. Blocking and racing hard is what this sport is all about. Montoya should go back to cart. He aint man enough to race with Martin anyway! Nascar has stopped all the other fun. In fact thats all there is now. martin is the MAN!

  70. Guess ole Ky Gel trying to slip one though and not doing post race tech inspection.

Now for number 00, What a waste of a driver!!
I think he should be punish to the max. Look what he did to Carl Edwards now Dale Earnhart Jr.
Jr. was running good all day, good car, etc. Then came “00″ not good.

  72. Montoya is a cry baby. Mark Martin is the man to win the chase. He has earned it. I hope Jr. has a good car next week and shows the fans he is the man. Kyle Bush, I hope he has to pay a big fine. Lots of money. He gets away with to much as it is. Nascar knows this to.

  73. yankeegranny on Mon, 21st Sep 2009 2:26 pm
  74. I wonder what all of you would have said if it had been Montoya had been in front and blocked Mark….Dirty racing????? I lost respect for Mark Martin when he knocked Brad K, out of the way when they were running 1-2 to get the first win for JR Motorsports. When he got out of the car the first words out of his mouth were.” I feel so sorry for Brad.” as if that make it ok. I am a Jr fan, but I would love to see Montoya win this championship, particularly if he could do it without winning a race. Did anyone else hear Montoya’s scanner immediately after the race was over. EGR competition director was telling Montoya what to say after the race was over? Congratulate Mark on a good race, don’t blow up, be mister nice guy, etc when someone cut in and said Juan isn’t in the car. The only thing said after that was, Oh Damn. Obviously, Juan didn’t get the message.

  75. BJ on Mon, 21st Sep 2009 4:21 pm
  76. Jr. had every right to be angry with Reutiman. Enough is enough. However, Jr. will be back next year and hopefully he can win a race this year.

As for Montoya, he does have talent and he could have spun Martin out. He didn’t because it was Martin and he also said he probably would have done the same as Martin. So why are you all whining about Montoya? Maybe you people need some cheese with your whine.

As for Martin – I think he has been over-rated this year. It’s all been about him and Kyle. I would like to see Martin win the championship so he can retire and let some of the younger talent get on the track. But unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to happen his year.

I still believe in Jr. and with his new crew chief, it could happen next year. 88 will be the car to beat!

  88. Dale Jr is a hero on the track, a gentleman and all the other drivers know that. D—-stands for dummy, dense driver which is David Reutimann. I, like most, cannot stand anyone on that Aarons team……..which is why we will never buy anything connected with Aarons! Mark Martin is a #1 classy, kind, considerate driver loved by all of us. While on the other hand, Montoya is the downfall and crap of NASCAR. He is arrogant, pushy……..and if he did something to Mark Martin……like that evil Montoya wanted to…….today HE WOULD BE HISTORY 10 FEET UNDER! At least that is what I heard. He needs to take lessons from M. Martin.

If anyone has ever had the chance to listen to him and his crew chief on the scanner at one of the races, you would already know he is a big cry baby. The question now is, who is the bigger of the crybabies, Montoya or tit crybaby kyle busch??? When Busch DID NOT make the Chase, it MADE MY DAY!!! Too bad he is still trying to cheat his way into winning. Hope the penalty is big enough for you to feel it this time, crybaby kyle.
