Brad Keselowski Wins in Wild Talladega Finish

Brad Keselowski did exactly what he had to do in the final two laps at Talladega. He tucked his nose under the rear bumper of Carl Edwards’ fast No. 99 Ford and drafted past his mentor and Nationwide series car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr as they came to the white flag, then Keselowski waited until the last possible moment to attempt a pass on the leader.

When Keselowski moved high on the track Edwards moved up to block. Edwards tried to block again when Keselowski moved to the low side – and Keselowski held his line, and held his foot on the gas, while making sure he did not cross Talladega’s double yellow line which would have disqualified him.

Carl Edwards’ block sent him spinning across the nose of Brad Keselowski’s car – then flying backwards into the catchfence in the tri-oval. The car didn’t miss going across the catchfence and into a spectator filled grandstand by much, which reminds us why NASCAR mandates restrictor plates at Talladega.

“He blocked and I wasn’t going to go below the yellow line,” said Brad Keselowski about the race-winning move. “I felt bad. I was watching Carl wreck in my mirror — but he put himself in that spot. I hope he’s OK!”

Dale Earnhardt Jr had to feel good with the 2nd place run – he would have been even happier to win – but the 2nd place finish should silence a few of the Dale Jr doubters who say he can’t win. Earnhardt’s pit crew stepped up their game, and gained Junior some positions on pit road in the race.

“I was watching Carl wreck in my mirror — but he put himself in that spot.” ~ Brad Keselowski

“The 99 and Brad hooked up,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr. “They are just a little bit faster and they moved up.  They were coming they were catching us and running the middle, and the middle had been a little quicker I guess we showed our hand a little early, maybe a lap or two too early and everybody saw what they was going to have to do if they wanted a shot at winning.”

You would think Junior had actually won the race judging by the big smile on his face when he congratulated Keselowski in Victory Lane.

Brad Keselowski put NASCAR Nation on notice that he is the real deal by capturing his first win in just his fifth Sprint Cup Series start. Keselowski isn’t even running a full-time schedule in Sprint Cup.

The win puts Brad Keselowski in the All Star Race. Keselowski is a future star.

So was this a wild ride at Talladega or what?

  4. WAS AS USUAL A GOOD RACE FOR THE LAST 40 LAPS. WATCHED HOCKEY AND THE BOSTON CELTICS GAME. GLAD I DIDN’T WASTE TIME WATCHING THE RACE UNTIL THE LAST 40 LAPS. ANOTHER LEFT TURN LEFT TURN, JUST A LITTLE FASTER. LIKE EDWARDS JUST LAID BACK AND DID THE LEFT TURN BIT. GLAD HE LOST FOR SAND BAGING. I DON’T LIKE THE FAST TRACKS, BORRING FOR THE FANS FOR THE MOST PART. GOOD FOR BRAD.TAKE AWAY THE PLATE AND LET THEM RACE FOR A CHANGE. WAKE UP NASCAR.

  6. i am glad that Carl is ok. it had to be scary for him. it looked bad.i have never seen a car do that and i don’t want to see it again. i am proud of jr. he did a great job. he showed he can still race. he has the desire to still win. this is what he needed. maybe this will be his turning point. he is still my man.

  8. Wow!! Who wouldv’e guessed? Great win, Brad!!! Too bad you and Dale Jr couldn’t have both won as you both deserved it. I could see he was very happy for your win, too.

  12. Does anyone know how the fans are. It was an absolute replay of Bobby Allison’s some years ago.

I’ll check back to see if anyone has an update on the fans.

Strange. We’ve known the ‘boys’ since their Dad raced in Michigan.

I hope they sit back, have a few brews and enjoy the moment.

  14. It was a good race and finish. carl should have won, but should have known better when a rockie is behind you. as for jr. just luck, not good driving.

  18. My hat is off to Carl Edwards, he did not put down Brad for what he did and to me that was a nice thing to say about Brad. He did not whine about Brad spinning him out, hey Kyle you should learn from this one! It was nice to see Brad get his first win and goes to show what we can expect from him. I am glad that Carl was not hurt and it was good to see him not do his signature back flip and I am sure his car never wants to do it for him in the future. That has been the most exciting win I have seen in years.

Keselowski didn’t do anything wrong. He shouldn’t back off because he’s being blocked.

  20. SO VERY PROUD OF BRAD, KNEW HE WAS RACING MATERIAL THE FIRST FEW TIMES I
SAW HIM RACE! CONGRATULATIONS TO DALE JR, THE OWNER, AND 2ND PLACE WINNER! AWESOME GUYS!

Great race finish Brad K. The announcers said that it was one of the best finishes, since 1987. Thank God that Carl Edwards is ok. Don’t feel bad Carl I even had some close calls except that I did that before you did. It is as if the fence took a lot of the shock from your fall landing you on the track with exact precision. It was a miracle. That is why NASCAR officials have to be tough, so then you guys can go home to your families. I wish you could see my driving. You would think that Dale is back with us, yes I said US!

  26. Everyone did a great job today. Carl is a good racer and races to win. That is exactly what happened today. Everyone was racing to win and no one was upset over the wreck. It was racing at Daga. Way to go Brad and Jr.

  28. blah blah blah…Brad held his ground – good for him…good to see someone else win…
and someone better tell Cousin Carl the CAR has to cross the finish line to count…there goes yet another Roush driver trying to steal the thunder away from the winner…..The only person I felt really bad for was Newman – at least he came across third – with half of a hood on his windshield!

  30. To the remark about Jr…just luck not a good driver!! Are you completly blind or just not too bright? That boy can drive, and he proved it yesterday AND today!!! He is great at bump-drafting too. ALSO……… I have to add this..How about JR. showing he is a man by actually bumpdrafting to push Kylie Boy to the front? Personally I wouldn’t have done it after the way Busch has raced dirty against JR.
But that just goes to show you just what type of person JR. is. Gooooooooo JR!!!!

  44. All the naysayers who can’t give credit to Jr., just replay the race today and open your eyes to what a driver he is when he is given a raceable car. Great race, Jr. and your true fans can overlook these folks who think otherwise. Being the mentor to Brad, I’m sure Jr. was one proud man today that Brad won. Go Jr. and Brad!!!!

  45. Kasey's Ga Nana on
  46. Dale, Jr is not the owner of the car that won today. Our friend is. He should have Brad drive for him more often. Maybe he can get sponsors and dollars now. JR owns the Nationwide car that Brad drives – not the cup car. After the bad wreck that Kenseth took on Sat, maybe he should have sat out Sunday’s race. He made too many mistakes and wrecked alot of drivers.

  48. I didn’t think jr owned the 09, I am not a jr fan but have to say he is the best at drafting.I also think carl running across finish line was great, just like ricky bobby and hey they were at talladega.

  60. I think Brad did an awesome job of driving. He has a good teacher. Edwards held back and then became aggressive and a rookie proved you can out manuever a veteran. JR. did an awesome job in his driving skills as well. Two of the happiest drivers there. They deserved this!

  62. If I had been Carl, would have done the same thing, get your feet on the ground and run a bit. He was very thankful not to have been really hurt or killed. I do agree, those cars are not to flip like they have been doing, this shows, that the fence has to be stronger though, a bit more and it would have been devastating to that crowd and even Carl. Nascar has to step up its safety programs and also when Robby Gordon took that awful hit, he missed by not far a wall that was not a safety barrier. I thought all tracks had to have these? Jeff found out that Vegas didn’t the hard way, and was very lucky not to have been more hurt than he was. This year Vegas corrected it. You would think the fastest track like yesterdays, would have every place, with those safety barriers, so shame on them. I bet this is corrected real quick now.
I am happy for Brad, he drove a clean race, at least as clean as you can get.
Carl didn’t have anything negative to say about him winning, but when they caught up with Kyle, he mouthes off his usual, because he came in 10th. Even his crew chief said Kyle needs to more careful, because I don’t care how good you are. If you don’t thank your sponsors and act like ass every week, I am sure they would rather have someone who acts like a grown up and gives thanks to his sponsors. Dale drove his ass off, he is finally hitting it, so I look for a win soon. I have so many drivers I am fans of. A few I wish they would go back and race in Nationwide until they quit wrecking the cup cars, Logana is not ready for this and even Gibbs is rethinking where he should be raceing for a few more years, not in the cup. So I can see him replaced before long, not my words it was on wind tunnel. No matter how young you are and good, I think 21 should be the age for cup raceing after a few years in Nationwide. Its a no brainer. This is all JMHO people,

  64. Glad Carl wasn’t hurt. He was a gentleman in not bashing Brad. Took evrything like a good sport. Kyle Busch should take lessons in courtsey and complimenting drivers whether they won or not. Even Ryan mentions being driven clean and hororably.

  66. FOR KENT I GO BACK TO THE FIFTIES IN RACING. YOU WAS PROBALLY NOT ARROUND THEN TO KNOW WHAT A RACE WAS. IT’S A MONEY THING NOW, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ROSES.

Excuse me but Carl even said he did not see Brad and Brad was abiding the rules and would not go below the yellow line, so Carl was the cause of ending the race. Being a rookie had nothing to do with it…he was at the right place at the right time. Had he been drafting Jr. instead of Newman the results might have been different, but that’s why it is called racing.
I do agree the “plate” races should have more restrictions if they are to continue or more serious “accidents” will happen.

  68. If race fans think back, Brad had a similar wreck racing one night in the Nationwide Series.
Brad’s was worse, he ended up in the hospital and Dale Jr. immediately flew there to see how Brad was, as Jr. was not at the track that night. As we all know, Dale Jr. has a heart of GOLD and really cares about “people” first in life. Brad showed what a #1 drive he really is and Dale Jr. found him so give our boy Jr some credit here. Carl Edwards made the race, I thought, by his fabulous personality and humor, above all that happened, by actually getting out of his wrecked/demolished racecar and walking rest of the way…….actually, Carl Edwards ran rest of the way and across the finish line…………..Carl deserves a trophy for that finish……..running, by foot, to finish! Way to go Carl Edwards……we love you too!

  69. Maureen on
  70. A question. What shocking comments did Dale Jr. make when he saw Brad (09) pushing Carl (99) ahead of him to the front? Junior had to be shocked! Yesterday’s race was the best ever! I wasn’t there in person, but if I had been, we would be sitting right in harm’s way. After that, I may stop sitting at the start/finish line. I was so happy when I saw Carl Edwards get out of his car and finish the race by foot. He has got to be in great shape!

  72. Somebody finally mentioned Newman. He took a very hard lick when 99 came down on him and then hit the wall. I would like to know if Ryan is alright. If anyone knows, please mail back. There’s a lot of hipe about Brad, Jr. and CE, but Ryan crossed the line in the third spot and has not been mentioned in any way. I think stinks!!!!!! KUDOS TO YOU, NEWMAN!!!!!!!

  74. If Jr. couldn’t win, Brad was my pick. Really, really happy for Brad and that team. Really glad Jr. finished second, was a great race for him. We all know Jr. can drive a race car, and I truly believe if Sr. had not died, Jr. would have already been a champion in the cup series. Just glad everyone is not hurt badly, and Jack Rousch cars didn’t win.

  76. THANK YOU ACTION P24. NEWMAN DID A FANASTIC JOB AND HE DESERVES A LITTLE GOOD WORD TOO. I HOPE IS ALRIGHT, NOBODY HAS SAID A WORD.

  78. The only way this finish could have been better would have been if Brad an Dale Jr. could have traded places! Every driver needs that “first BIG win” though. Dale Jr. had his too. It was great to see though! I do wish that the spectators that got hurt, hadn’t. I’m keeping them all in my prayers. What a good race though. I know that ALL of Juniors fans were on their collective feet and cheering him on to the front. Too bad that with all that combined human energy, we couldn’t push him across the finish line first! Oh well, there’s always next week!
GO JUNIOR! WE LOVE YA!!! 88-4 EVER!!!!!

Seams funny that funny junbug came in 2nd and some of his fans [complain] because he was not first i call that fair weather fans, Jeff Gordon is my driver and he did not win last year and I’am still his #1 fan, what I’am saying is bad or good Jr.still be your #1 driver he has said he can never be as good as his Dad

  85. BJ on
  86. Marcel, you are a real jerk!! What is your problem?? Do you even know how to drive? Have you noticed that everyone of the other drivers on the field like to draft with Jr.? That’s because they know he is the best. Or perhaps you can’t see either!

This was a fantastic race. Dale, Jr. and Brad did an awesome job yesterday. As Brad said, Karl put himself in his ending position. And if he was able to run across the finish line, he obviously was okay. I do feel bad for the fans who got hurt. However, in a legal sense that is known as “assumption of the risk”. However, yes, NASCAR has learned another lesson and must make those fences stronger in order to prevent further mishaps.

I agree that it should have been Brad and Jr. drafting at the end. However, Jr. came in second so how much better can it get. Those guys are the real pros.

  87. Greg S on
  88. Just ignore Marcel…the mentally handcapped. This was truly the best race I have seen in a long time. The guys are figuring out that pairing up works even better than the train if you stay in the sweet spot which seems to be the middle groove. Racing is a chess match at Dega and the winner goes to the smartest contestant. Brad showed guts by sticking his nose in there and holding his ground while Carl made the mistake of trying to occupy the same space on the chess board! Sorry Carl…castle cannot move diagonal to capture the rook..ie!

  89. sharon on
  90. Carl should have not won the race. He is a sandbagger and he made his move to block brad up high and then brad moved to pass down low and Carl MR ED edwards wasn’t fast enough to blcok the move down low and got clipped yes by a rookie but was not going to give into Carl’s move or trying to push brad below the yellow line to win the race.Glad Carl’s ok but he as the saying goes he made his bed and he has to lay in it.

  91. sharon on
  92. the winner as you put it will have plenty of drafting partners in the future.Carl may have the problem of finding people to draft with since his screw up sunday.

  101. 24Karat48 on
  102. Why didn’t Carl get a penalty for being out running around on the track? I know what his thought was, but he put his life in jeopardy as well as other drivers who had yet to finish the race. What if there were drivers who didn’t know there was a person out there running around on foot on the track. I know the yellow flag had dropped, but he really wasn’t using his peanut!

  103. 24Karat48 on
  104. Has anyone ever noticed that Carl can’t draft at “Dega”? It was at this same race track last Oct that Carl caused his own teammates to wreck while he was trying to bump-draft with teammate Greg “The Biff”!!

His story; “I feel bad that I took my teammates out. I know Matt’s mad and I’m sure Greg’s mad, but you just do the best you can and hope for the best. It just didn’t work out today. I was worried about the idiots when you come here and I was the guy that caused that one.”

Sounds like most of the field had already figured out they didn’t want to draft with “the idiots,” namely Carl. Fortunately, for Brad ignorance was bliss. It worked out to his favor, but I don’t think Ryan would necessarily agree. Good thing no one got killed (Carl)!!!

[...] move looked similar to the block Carl Edwards tried to put on Brad Keselowski at Talladega. The results were about the same, [...]

I just knew you would win a sprint cup race this year. You’ve got it together and I’m damn proud of you.
I’m a Jr. fan and I hope you the very best in the future. You’re learning from one of the best.
Keep beating kyle, every chance you get.

  105. James Wheeler on
  106. Carl deserved to win that race a heck of a lot more than “Brad Crashalotski” did, I’ll tell you that much!! Just like Brad deserved the most recent deal that occurred at Atlanta Motor Speedway!!

Tell me what you're thinking...
