Kannapolis Boots Earnhardt Flags
July 25th, 2008 | by RacingWin |It seems that city officials think that Dale Earnhardt is no longer good enough for his hometown of Kannapolis, North Carolina.
The city put up a series of banners along the “Dale Trail” honoring the 7 time NASCAR Champion following his death in the 2001 Daytona 500.
Now California billionaire David Murdock wants the banners removed, and the city of Kannapolis has agreed.
Murdock owns the North Carolina Research Center, a science research conglomerate that is being developed in Kannapolis.
The Salisbury Post has reported that Murdock’s company wants to “put the best face on the city” for a high profile investor - rumored to be Oprah Winfrey - who is visiting the city.
The Dale Train begins at I-85’s exit 60 and travels through downtown Kannapolis on Dale Earnhardt Boulevard. It then passes Ralph Earnhardt’s grave and the old Edelman’s Garage where Ralph learned how build fast engines for bootleggers like Junior Johnson. It continues through a section of Kannapolis known as Car Town, where the Earnhardt clan once lived.
Martha Earnhardt, Dale’s mother, still lives in Kannapolis.
The Dale Trail passes Dale Earnhardt Plaza, where Dale’s friends have built a park with a 9 foot statue of ‘The Intimidator’. From there the trail heads out of town and past Dale Earnhardt Inc’s race shop and corporate headquarters in Mooresville.
City Manager Mike Legg has told the Kannapolis city council that the banners will be permanently removed. Is that any way to honor Dale Earnhardt?
However, the Cabarrus Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to put up new markers along the Dale Trail. A plan that Legg says may not fly.
“There may be a conflict as to what happens later,” Legg wrote, says the Salisbury Post. “There are many that do not want to see anything ‘Dale-related’ going back up.”
If you want to contact Mike Legg - the Kannapolis City Manager — to let him know how you feel here’s how to reach him:

Kannapolis, North Carolina 28081
Please let other Earnhardt fans know about this.
What do you think about the way Kannapolis officials have handled this? Comments left here will be forwarded to the Kannapolis City Manager.

I think it is a disrepect to the man that put that town on the map. No one would have ever known where Kannapolis was if it wasn’t for Dale Earnhardt. They should be ashamed of themselves. And this “billionaire” is being placated because of his money…..so what….the Earnhardts have put tourist in the city for a lot of years and Everyone has beneifted from it. What a slap in the face to the Earnhardts.

What a disgrace. Dale lived in this town and now you are not going to keep his memory alive. Who is this Murdock charater. Mr.Murdock is a Californian with lots of money who probably won’t live here. Dale was raised here and raised his family here. Let them at least put up some kind of markers so people grom out of town can know what Dale was all about and what was in the history of this town.

I want everyone to read the answer from Mike Legg, City Manager, of the City of Kannapolis, NC that he sent to me via Internet in answer to my e-mail to him.
Here it is as follows-Thank you all for reading his answer and the truth….
Now we have the rest of the story…..
Dear Curtis,
Thank you so much for your email.
Unfortunately much of the news coverage on this issue is either inaccurate or incomplete. Let me assure you, the City of Kannapolis has absolutely no desire or any plans to change our ongoing commitment to honoring Dale Earnhardt and his legacy. I agree with you 100% that Dale Earnhardt, is a critically important part of our heritage. In fact, the Kannapolis City Council included as part of this year’s budget $25,000 to enhance the Dale Earnhardt Plaza (site of the statue). Those plans are in the works now. There is no way the City would continue to invest in the tribute to Dale Earnhardt and divest in other areas of honoring him. Let me assure you there are no plans for removal of the statue and no plans to change road names or numbers honoring the memory of Dale Earnhardt (in fact our City Council is the group that changed the name of Centergrove Road and S. Loop Road to Dale Earnhardt Blvd several years ago).
The reality is, the City of Kannapolis had very little to do with the Dale Trail banners. The banners were jointly purchased several years ago by Atlantic American Properties/Cannon Village (AAP) and the Cabarrus Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). The City did not pay for or have anything to do with the purchase. The only role we have played is to assist the CVB in the hanging and removal of the flags based on its decisions. And it is important to know, even though the news media is not reporting it, David Murdock donated land free of charge to the City for the D.E. Plaza and paid 100% of the costs for the statue (more than $200,000) to honor Dale Earnhardt’s legacy.
The banners were removed because they were worn and dirty and the CVB believed that they needed a fresh look. There was already a plan the CVB had been working on for some time to enhance the Dale Earnhardt (Dale Trail) experience in Cabarrus County and Kannapolis. Thoughts are to include a driving CD taking people to all the points of interest along the Dale Trail. Also thoughts are being discussed of installing attractive informational markers at key interest points (Ralph’s grave, the D.E. Plaza, etc.). There is also the possibility of new Dale/NASCAR banners being created to honor the sport and the legacy of Dale. This notion of the banners being removed permanently is simply false information and poor reporting by the news media.
Even though we are certainly proud of the changes going on in the City of Kannapolis and our new and exciting future, we are in no way abandoning our history and heritage. On the contrary, we continue to search for ways to enhance the preservation of our past as well as improve our future
So, I hate that the media coverage portrayed this the way it did. They did a poor job of telling the whole story, which I hope is clear though my response to you.
The bottom line is the City of Kannapolis supports and honors the legacy of Dale Earnhardt and will continue to invest in promoting his memory.
As to the media reports about selling the banners on e-Bay, that is a decision the CVB will make. The City has no role in that decision. I would encourage you to contact the CVB to let them know your thoughts. If I had to guess, I suspect the money will be re-circulated into the new Dale Earnhart tribute activities I describe above. However, your idea of a donation to a NASCAR charity makes a lot of sense as well.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have thoughts or ideas on how we can enhance our tribute to Dale and/or our support of NASCAR.
Regards,
Mike

This is a total disrespect to Dale Earnhardt Sr who put Kannaplois on the map. This just goes to show you that David Murdock and Oprah only care about their own agenda and not the Earnhardt legacy. If I had a business in that town I would pull out and move elsewhere. And to think Dale’s mother still lives there. What a complete disrespect for the Earnhardt family. I hope Oprah does the right thing and makes the city put the banners back up. If not, she will never get any respect from the Nascar community!!!!!!

My family and i were dissappointed that we didn’t get to see the mill that the earnhardts worked at. the banners were a big help in finding things in the city, so if you do remove then something to repalce them would be great.

If the banners are cloth it should have been understood that they were temporary and would have to come down. They could get in pretty bad shape. I would bet on DEI over oprah who sends most of her money to Africa. If Earnhart in Kannapolis insults her, tough, let her go to africa. DEI may be worth more. They spend more each and every race for the sport and the fans. I’m sure if the banners come down and she can still see the honor that Kannapolis has for Earnhardt then his memory has not been dishonored. Kannapolis will always be Earnhardt long after Oprah and Obama have moved on. (Hopefully that won’t be long)!

Email I have sent to Mr. Legg:
I am sure the online discussion stating that the city of Kannapolis has agreed to remove the tribute trail Dale Earnhardt banners must surely be off base. No city manager would be stupid enough to consent to such an agreement seeing that it is the Earnhardt Family that has put your city on the map. The main reason any tourist would visit Kannapolis is BECAUSE of this legendary racing family. Surely if Mr. Murdock and Oprah are aware of this insane decision they cannot be supporting it. Anyone who has any money sense at all would be finding a way to help promote their ventures along side of the Earnhardt name. If the city goes ahead with this decision you can only expect that it will have a negative effective on anyone who would be interested in investing in your city. Any rational minded city manager would realize that especially in these hard times we need heroes to look up to and emulate. For the average person (I guess that does not include city managers or millionaires) the Earnhardt name symbolizes the power to succeed no matter where you start or where you come from and that we DO NOT forget our roots and where we come from. I am sure that the Research Center and the Earnhardt banners can co-exist in the same city. Instead of removing them it would be to the advantage their public image to graciously replace them with new ones.

Such a legacy and you people do not want to honor him. If he came from my City we would carry that Legacy till the end of time. Such a great man Dale Earnhardt was and the tradition should carry on. Kannapolis is and will always be Dale Earnhardt Country, you people should be proud………………………….

I cannot believe the article I just read. It sounds to me that there are people in this world who care for no one. They are just interested in how much money they can put in their pockets. Dale Earnhardt Sr. has brought more money and fame to Kannapolis, than anyone would ever believe. I feel Murdock has a hidden agenda we don’t know about. The city of Kannapolis should rebel against such a thing. If nothing else this should not be done because of his sweet Mother. I am sure this will hurt her very much. However, if it does happen. We love you Dale and NOBODY will ever take your memory away from us.

It is obvious Kannapolis leaders forgot who invested in them first. The Earnhardt family has several generations that have brought positive changes to Kannapolis. It appears Kannapolis is only following NASCAR’s lead, of forgetting its roots. The Earnhardt family is not the only racing family, but they surly deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the community. There is an old saying you do not know what you have until you lose it. This kind of thinking is why so many teams are moving their shops away from the area little by little. The Earnhardt family will always be there for Kannapolis to use later when the outsiders come and go. Kannapolis hold on to those signs one day you will need them to help promote your town.

If anyone believes the flags were taken down because they were worn and dirty then you should see these photos of the flags as they are being taken down. They look like new to me.

It’s sad ,If the man was still alive I think we all know what Ironhead would do!!!Tradition has left the sport that Dale help build along with competition and pride. So Kannapolis can just go down with the sport and be a memory that we’ll hear folks talking about for years. It’s so hard to start venting and not bring up Bobby and Davey Allison memories?Just as well touch on the presidental race in America,Oop’s theres not one!!!

Mr. Legg should rember who and what made Kannapolis a house hold name. If it wasn’t for the Earnhardt Family, I would have never gone north of Mooresville. Mr. Muddock must have a lot of pull to have the Earnhardt name erased from the history of Kannapolis, N.C. I hope Mr. Legg has his resume polished up, I think he will be needing it in the near future

It is understanding that the banners after all this time would need to be REPLACED..my husband & I belong to Syracuse Hog Group in Syracuse NY it is a Harley motorcycle club (local) the American Flag at out Harley Shop was worn from the weather so our group just replaced it with money from our dues. If DEI would not replace the banners what about Dale Sr. & Dale Jr. fans. I am sure that Jr. & his sister would help with this. With all these fans just think how much would be raised with only a few dollars from each fan. If this was done how could Kannapolis say no? That way they would be back were they belong.
To honor Dale Sr. Just a idea!

Though Mr legg and the City Council may remove and icon from the city, it is reasonably certain there names will soon be forgotten. Dale Earnhardt’s name will endure long after it has been removed.
Plesa remember this Mr Legg!

I am stunned. I still cry when I think of Dale and how he died, loving what he did. I miss those
donuts he put on doors. I have always wanted to
visit Kannapolis and was, yes WAS going to visit this year and it’s a LONG trip for us, but not now. What is this billionaire doing..just what all money people do..I will bet all money that he
wants Kannapolis to build this research centre for him, this is why they are billionaires. And when Kannapolis runs out of money supporting this venture then he will pull up stakes and leave you and the empty building in the dust. I’ve seen it before and I’ll see it again. City politicians like the color of money and their common sence goes right out the window when money walks in a door. PUT THE BANNERS BACK UP. and tell the money man to buzz off. Don’t discrace the EARNHARDT name, it built your town. Our Island runs on the tourism of “Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy
Maud Montgomery 100 years ago and even though some don’t like the idea it does bring in the bucks, which is more than this research center will generate..that money will just leave again in the pockets of the billionaire. THINK before you make such a hasty decision as you are letting ONE greedy man to run your town and discracing the name of EARNHARDT. As I sit here typing I can look up and see the No. 3 car
with it’s engine bonnet open and that devilish grin looking back at me and beneath it is Jr. smiling and below that is No.3 on it’s side trying to out run Havoline down the track.
My hero No. 3, forever alive and should also be in Kannapolis.

This is so downright disrespectful. To think this Mr. Legg represents the city of Kannapolis. He ought to be ashamed of himself. Kick him and his cohorts out of office, they don’t deserve to represent the city. And for what, OPRAH!!! Money breeds money. Isn’t that sad?? Dale Sr. WAS Kannapolis. Not only is this blatent disrespect for Dale, but for his entire family. Let’s just be glad he can’t remove the Statue of Dale to replace that with one of the big O. When we did our North Carolina trip, that was the main reason for taking it, to see and drive the “Dale Trail”. Staying on Dale Earnhardt Blvd. was for me the most incredible thing I’ve ever done, I felt honored. Now Mr. Legg wants to take away from not only the city, but from fans also. Well, Legg-O, if that’s the way you feel, guess I won’t be visiting your city again. Let OPRAH support you. I say when Oprah arrives, not only get out and wave your own flags proudly, but maybe an egg or two on her limo will let her know how she has destroyed a LEGEND. Hope she can do for you what Dale did….NOT!!! Mr. Legg, this is one MAJOR mistake you may make, and regret for the rest of your life. How do you sleep at night??? You are a disgrace to your city!!!!! You do what you will, but remember nobody will ever replace THE INTIMIDATOR. Not even Oprah.

Mr. Legg. Would you remove tribute to the 9/11 victims because mamipulator Muddock thinks Oprah would be offended. would you remove the memorial to fallen Veterans because Oprah would think it offensive. Mr. Legg, these memorials are placed because of the respect for those who gave to the community and proved their value to life and society in whole. It is a shame that you would stoop so low for a few $$$$ base on the assumption that muddock would grease your palms. Your a Judas to your community, religion, and to the High Esteem that your town holds for One of its Fallen Hero.
I served in Viet Nam and am proud of it, and would never place myself as a dictator in greenback suits. God will dish out your just reward when you leasr expect it. Remember, you can be removed fromyour office by a peoples court held on your front door. Remember it is We The People who have the standing in the law, your just a man who can and should be removed from office for desicartion of a national and international Icon. I would pray for your soul, but you sold that for a few silver coins.

The Earnhardts still live there what do you think you are going to do to them.Just because Dale is gone doesn’t give you all the right to tear down his name. I wasn’t awear of all that Dale did for you town until he was gone, but I can’t image that anyone would stand by and let this happen. Asheville,N.C.

I guess they don’t want to scare off the ‘large’ investor with anything that they may think is redneck or southern heritage if you catch my drift. Too bad ‘money’ plays the part in most all these types of decisions and the loser is the small town resident or in this case ‘the fans’ that loved and worshipped Mr. Earnhardt.

Don’t take away what the man (Dale) built and made for your town, wthout him you would be nothing. Last May my daughter and I went to my niece’s wedding in Atlanta, Georgia. We live in Pennsylvania and did not want to drive straight through. We choose Kannapolis to spend two nights because of the interesting things we saw on your web site. AMong them was the Dale Trail. We visited the Trail, some other garages, the monor league baseball field and even ate dinner at Punchey’s Diner. Do not eliminate the signes honoring one of your most famouse sons. That would be disrespectful to his legacy. Of all the towns we could have stopped at on our way home we would not have picked Kannopolis if it wasn’t for Dale Earnhardt.

I think this is a crying shame!! Everything these days is all about money and the “Golden Rule”…..He who has the money makes the rules. What ever happened to good old-fashioned respect! That jerk from California needs to come down off his fancy polo horse and realize what Dale Sr meant to the sport that we love so much! Dale’s death was a tragedy and was far too soon. NASCAR wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is today if it hadn’t been for Dale. The Kannapolis officials need to get their hands out of everyone else’s pockets and remember why people know and visit thier town! Nuff said!!!

No matter what any of us write will make much of a different. However, I do think it is disrespectful to his fans & to his memory. The whole conversion here has one question behind it, do we think we have enough in Dale Earnhardt memory? That is not the point to his fans & that is not what we are talking about. We are tryin’ to give something back to a man the meant so much to so many people, gave so much of himself as a result. His son is in the sport, everyone loves him now. I don’t agree with why they love him, but I understand. I heroically idolize his Dale Jr… for a toatally differnt reason (not for his looks either). Bottom line is no matter what happens, Dale Earnhardt will always be loved for his accomplishments but mostly for his ability to see & speak the truth. That’s how he’ll be remembered by my father & I.

This is disgusting, my Winter getaway will not include Kannapolis, this year. I would not spend one more thin dime in that Town, if this is how they disrespect the Man and Family that put it on the Map.
As for Oprah, she is a self-absorbed pain, who is completely out of touch with everyday people. Her show is on the way out, stats prove that, as well as her pathetic opinions, and influence! Oprah, and the Town Council need to understand that Money does not mean anything, when it comes to a True American Hero!
The Towns People of Kannapolis need to stand up for the Earnhardts.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
