Is Jimmie Johnson as good as Dale Earnhardt

Dale Earnhardt Jr said that Jimmie Johnson – knocking on the door of a 4th NASASR Championship – was just as good as Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and David Pearson.

“You definitely have to put him there in with my father, Richard and David Pearson, and all them guys,” Dale Earnhardt Jr said.

Do you agree with Junior? Does Jimmie Johnson belong in the same class as Dale Earnhardt?

I love Jr..and in ways I guess he might be right, in some ways but lets just wait and see..time will tell..they said that about Gordon too…but he still hasnt reached that magic number 7, (NO ONE HAS & DALE SR. HAS BEEN GONE YEARS) if Johnson does EVER… than you can put him with the great ones till then..its just a wait and see game.

I think Jimmie is a great driver, but I don’t know if he is another Dale Sr., no one could figure out the draft better then dale Sr., I like Jimmie, and I hope they don’t find out he is cheating, I just can’t believe any car is that much faster then the rest of the cars racing,I don’t know what Chad has figured out, buy it is awesome. anyway, good luck Jimmie on your fourth title.

    14. NO. Jeff Gordon gave Jimmie championship cars
    and one of the best, if not the best crew chief in nascar. Dale Sr. started from the bottom and worked his way up in cars that were not even close to the cars they have today.

    16. How about they find out they have been cheating. Can we say traction control? Just saw them messing in the steering column– probably installing their secret weapon making sure JJ knows where it is and how to remove it during the cool down lap so the officials can’t find it.

    21. Iagree that Sr. Started in bare roots racing and climbed the ladder of success with speed and passion. The racing and the cars are different now.I think JJ is one of the best 5 drivers, but I KNOW that Chad is the man! He is the best ever! There are a few that have a slight chance to be as good!

No one is saying JJ is better than the LEGANDS named, only do we think he is good enough to be up there with them.Like JJ , or not, he has done what nobody else ever has, & many never will.He has earned his way up the ladder. To be that good, every week, iot does seem like they are cheating, but your innocent til proven guilty. To get a compliment from Dale Jr, abt being as good as his father, has got to be as good as any trophy.There never has been anybody that can stand by Dale Sr, in anyway. Not knocking JJ, he is the great one in todays Nascar. What would have those guys accomplished today? I enjoyed it much more in the 70, 80 and 90s. I used to go to several a year and watch from start to finish the others, not anymore. I can watch the last 30 minutes and the highlights. Its become as boring as watching baseball in spanish…

    58. After reading all the replies, I have to make a point. You can’t compare what someone done in another era to someone now. Nascar has changed the rules so much that I could drive a Sprint car now. That’s like comparing Tiger Woods to Jack Nicklaus, the equipment is different now. And some of you saying that Dale Sr. would knock them out of the way, well just remember what he told them, “If you can’t stay ahead of me, get out of the way.” Now if you can’t stay ahead, its called blocking. A lot of racing died along with Dale Sr.

    63. It’s hard to compare drivers of today with drivers back when Sr & Petty were racing. JJ lost my respect at Talledega. At true racer wouldn’t have ridden around at the back all day. They would have been up racing to show the fans a good race. Remember what happened to Edwards when he tried that. He ended up taking out a lot of good cars when he finally decided to race. As for JJ I’m not sure if he was ever going to race in that one (just ride around).

    65. I think Jimmy is a great driver!! I never cared for Jimmy until this year. Of course you have these cry babies that aren’t as good as Jimmy, or Dale or any of them and when they’re not as competive as the top drivers they’re going to come up with this excuse that someone is cheating!! Grow up losers!!!!
    Dale, Sr. could start in the back and always end up in the front. I feel so bad for Dale, Jr. because he shouldn’t be compared to his dad. I love Dale, Jr. and it seems as though when Sr. died a part of Jr. went with him. I will always be an Earnhardt fan no matter what place Jr finishes!!

    66. Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty will always be the best, because they raced the old way and battle to the end. Today, Nascar is totally different and I really prefer to go back to the 80′s style racing again. Everybody had a chance to be a champion but this new way is throwing everything off.
    Jimmie will never be like Earnhardt, ever. No way. Also, Chad cheated too much in the beginning and I wonder if he is still doing it but Nascar having a hard time finding it if he is.
    I know Jimmie going to win his 4th championship, but, wow, I hope he screw up and Mark Martin win it. If Jimmie win it again, I will watch the races but when it come to the Chase for the Cup, it better to turn the tv off starting next Sept 2010 and just wait for Daytona to come around. You all know Jimmie going to win those races when he in the chase.
    Nothing to look forward to or your favorite driver never will get a chance. How about we throw Jimmie over to the Formula One racing and then we can see a totally different chase for the cup. A guy can dream about that.

    75. I think some people wanted to make history happen because of the failing NASCAR popularity. So Hendricks gave Johnson all the good equipment and tricks to win when the Chase comes up. Martin and Gordon were doing good until the Chase began.

    80. Four consecutive wins is certainly something to be proud of and my hats off to JJ, BUT there is no comparison between Dale Sr’s driving and Jimmie’s driving. Of all the races I have attended and watched on TV, I have never seen Dale Sr. get in a line and bide his time just riding around the track as JJ did. Oh, no, Dale Sr. would be right up there passing all he could to get to the front. They drive entirely different. If JJ gets to the 7th championship, I may reconsider…..

I admit he’s good, but what with all the changes that Nascar has made (rules and the “car of tomorrow”) I don’t think JJ could handle the way racing used to be. Why is it in any sport when a team does awesome more than once, everyone gets their panties in a bunch? Same with the Yankees, etc etc. When you’re… good you’re good. Period. The 48 Team is awesome. They win. duhhh! Why be a hater. Same with Kyle B. he is an awesome driver no matter where you put him. He has a passion for racing that is very admirable. A driver could drive 5 times, win 5 times and get a championship. Now its a product of what you do thru out the entire race season, not just a select few races. I pray Jr’s car/crew get up to speeeeeeed next season. Can’t wait til next season! Withdrawals will start about 8pm tonight. Today though…Jimmie, drive it like ya stole it and bring home that #4 championship. The ENTIRE team has earned it. Don’t worry, the haters today will be hating someones else tomorrow.

    127. I think JR is just saying that to make Rick happy. As the broadcasters said the 88 is the same place as the 5 car was. When HMS has increase the number of cars they have, the 5 car has become the experimentally car. Pearson and Petty raced back when the race car driver was racing to win, with cars that were stock cars. When Sr started it was still pretty much the same, and he to raced to win, not points. NASCAR has changed everything. The whole idea of racing. Now you need millions to have a great race team. It’s more for a race team to win not the driver, if the pit crew takes 2 seconds longer than the others, it’s like they now may not win. JJ and Jeff maybe good drivers, but they win with their teams, not just by racing. They may not cheat, but HMS is good at getting strong sponsorships, giving them almost unlimited money for technology, and employees. They race for points, not to win. Not my number one driver, but Kyle Busch is a lot like Petty, Pearson and SR, he races to win, I haven’t heard of him taking it easy to keep his points stable, all you hear is he wants to win!

    148. Not even close. SImply look at the former IROC series, where the cars were identically prepared. Look at who won the most IROC champions. That will tell you who the best DRIVERS, (not race teams), are. The 48 team are the best CHEATERS, plain and simple. They’re talented at breaking the rules to have the fastest car, that’s all. If it weren’t for their illegal race cars, Jimmy Johnson would be just another no-name “also-ran” week in and week out, just like he was in the IROC series, if he had a ride at all.

Just goes to show how crooked NASCAR is today compared to years past. Why even bother to watch any of NASCAR races in 2010 if all they are going to do is put their “Golden Boy” in first place from the start of the chase til the end???? I agree with some of the comments above, if there were no Chase as way in the past, there would be no Jimmy. He would have NEVER won even 1 championship if the point system was never changed.
