Why James Hylton is Not Too Old to Race in the Daytona 500

James Hylton has been named the driver of the EM Motorsports Dodge in the 2009 Daytona 500.

I was listening to Dave Moody on Sirius today when someone called in and said James Hylton was too old to be racing. That it would be bad for NASCAR if ‘something’ happened to Hylton in the race.

What a load of bull.

If anyone has earned the right to drive in the Daytona 500 it is James Hylton.

In 1966 James Hylton was named NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year after competing in 41 races and posting 20 top 5 finishes, and 32 top 10′s.

At 74 years of age he is set to make start No. 602 of his Cup career.

The veteran driver was excited about returning to Daytona. “Christmas has come early for me,” said Hylton. “My main goals are to become the oldest competitor to ever run the Daytona 500 and of course, win the race.”

EM Motorsports is outside the top 35 in owner’s points, so Hylton will have to qualify his way into the field on speed, or race his way in during the Gatorade Dual qualifying races.

Team owner John Carter said he plans to “run a complete 2009 series with James Hylton” in the Sprint Cup series. The team will have to sign a major sponsor to make that happen – but a good run at Daytona could put James Hylton back behind the wheel in the Sprint Cup Series.

“My main goals are to become the oldest competitor to ever run the Daytona 500 and of course, win the race” — James Hylton

James Hylton has 601 starts in NASCAR’s Cup series. His last win was in the 1972 Talladega 500 where he led 106 laps in his 1971 Mercury. You can learn more about the driver at JamesHylton.com

Out of those 601 starts Hylton finished in the top 10 301 times – that’s over 50 % in the top 10! On top of that he has 140 top 5 finishes. Those are some pretty amazing stats. I was Impressed myself when I looked them up.

Hylton last raced at Daytona in the July, 2008 Nationwide race.

James Hylton, I wish you nothing but the best for the Daytona 500. I look forward to seeing you back on the track at Daytona.

What about you? Do you think James Hylton should race in the Daytona 500?

AND I AGREE WITH YOU IF HE CAN QUALIFY LET THE MAN RACE!!
IF JAMES HYLTON WAS A DANGER TO HIMSELF OR
OTHERS NASCAR WOULDN’T LET HIM RACE SO LEAVE

Go for it James….I’m 78 years old still drive my 2002 Monte Carlo SS love to drive fast but held back by traffic laws regarding speed. If I were a male and (and I am very female) and had the opportunity to drive a race car I would be right along side you.
    GIVE ‘IM HELL JAMES !!!

I say if Mr. Hylton wants to run and can qualify, go for it. It’s not very likely anthing will happen to him in the race since he has enough runs under his belt to know what and when to do it. I think he should be commended for wanting to race, although everyone might not feel the way I do. If he does race, I hope he does really well.

If Mr. Hylton wants to be in the race and can qualify, then more power to him. I hope he goes out there and shows the young guys what racing is all about. I hope he qualifies and does well in the race and sets the record he wants to set. Good Luck to Mr. Hylton.

  4. You are never to old to race. If his car is as safe as the rest, let him go for it. He sometimes qualifies for races when younger drivers do not. He like some others just needs a full time sponsor beside the Lord. I know other drivers and announcers have in the past helped him out by buying a set of tires or put their name on his car as a sponsor. That question is like asking Wendel Scott if he was to black to race.

  16. How any have the right to say somebody to old or to young.
For instance a 14 yr old going to college, they made there way let them go.

Mr. James Hylton you go get em.I have 100 % faith and know you can show them all something.

All that say to old obviously wish they were in your shoes “driving shoes”.

To say if something to happen how would Nascar take that ,well how different is it when a high school football player no nown health issues falls to the ground for some unknown reason, never gets up does that mean no kids should play football?

Enough of my 2 cents James Hylton you go and drive till your content and PRAYING to see you in Victory Lane in Daytona.

  18. I have to disagree with everybody,Nascar and team owners are having problems getting good sponsors. If something should happen to him it would be bad for nascar. We already have some older drivers still racing with a much better race history than Hilton and look how poorly their doing. Mark Martin is an exception. Team owners should be looking for new young up and coming drivers.Owners should consider talented female race car drivers, like Danica Patrick etc.,that would get fans interested again

I’m with you William. I thought I stressed that in my reply (#2 on this list) The only time anyone is too old is when they have to leave this earth. I happen to think that NASCAR is keeping me young. I get pumped just waiting for Sunday’s races. L.D.F.(AGE 78)

  28. Certainly he is not too old. If his health is good enough for him to drive (and I’m sure NASCAR would not allow him to drive if it wasn’t), and he can qualify that car, he has as much right to drive as anybody. I wish him luck.

  30. Why does he need to qualify? Can he not get the 43rd spot for being a previous race champion?

    [Reply]

    RacingWin Reply:

Rob, The past champion’s provisional goes to the most recent championship winner not qualified for a race.

It is only for the annual championship, not for winning a race.

No, James Hylton does not get it.

  32. Yes tell us why Mark Martin is an exception.

    [Reply]

    marcel Reply:

Debbie, Mark has won on every track on the nascar schedule and then some, came close to the champion ship at least twice and to this day is very competitive.Should nascar let Hylton tryout, it would be a blow to nascar. Open wheel leagues will look at nascar as an old mans sport. Personally I have nothing against James Hylton.

    [Reply]

    debbie Reply:

Sorry to you marcel it looks like you do have something against him his age, where is there a criteria saying age .Except you have to be 18 to race in cup races.

To anybody thinking somebody to old is just outright greedy or jealous for themselves.

If the sport stopped people do to old age it would be a boring sport..
Next you would start by saying in the roots of racing that 40,50,60 yrs. old to old to race on dirt.Like Red Farmer racing a 800 HP Super Dirt Late Model.I think we all have opinions yet i think it is WRONG to say that you say what i beleive you ment other SANCTIONS,SERIES, ETC. would call it a old man sport.TOTAL BS.

  38. This is not just about old age/74.This is about reflex, overall mental and physical condition, healing process if he should get hurt because the body cant take the same abuse etc.Cant compare a short dirt track to the high speed at Daytona. Some of you cant be taking racing serious if you think these things don’t matter. That is all I have to say.

    [Reply]

    debbie Reply:

It must be old age your thinking.I know plenty of racing whether it be dirt or asphalt you can still be hurt or sorry to say killed.

MENTAL you say more rookies or whoever been saved from wrecks do to experience, now i suppose you say that has nothing to do with this you ought to think again, you said MENTAL..,if his physical condition wasn’t up to PAR NASCAR wouldn’t let him race.
And to say we aren’t taking racing serious you are by 100 % wrong. How many races have you won?
How many racecars do you own?
How long have you spent on the road with the team?
How much do you spend on the team?
What driver do you fall under that backs up what you say?
How long has this driver of yours been driving?

  48. What Hylton will have going against him is practice time in the COT, especially now with no Daytona testing.
With ratings slipping and sponsorship money short, the age demographic Hylton brings may be a shot in the arm for Nascar.

  49. debbie on
  50. Marybeth what do you mean by that?

    [Reply]

  51. Marybeth on
  52. Debbie, Hylton is not used to driving a COT. He has driven the previous car, similar to the one still driven in Nationwide. The best of the Cup drivers say that they drive very differently. To make the field Hylton will be handicapped by not having much practice in the COT.
I think Hylton could bring a lot of the ‘oldsters’, with their money, to Nascar as a benefit. AARP would make a great sponsor for him.
    Does that help explain…?
    Marybeth

    [Reply]

  53. debbie on
  54. Yes that does help explain what you trying to say.

And i can think of alot of sponsors that could be there to support him like you say.

Not because of physical ability, but money. I announced during the 60s and 70s at the old TriCo speedway near Durham,NC and just have a soft spot for us older ones that have been forced out of the sport.
