Is Jeff Gordon Now Kyle Busch’s New Best Friend?
August 10th, 2008 | by RacingWin |I couldn’t help but notice how NASCAR fans, the media and even his fiercest competitors seemed to be in awe of Kyle Busch following Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen.
“I’m sorry, what slump?” ~ Kyle
Busch responding to Jeff Gordon’s criticism as he takes the checkered flag.
Even Tony Stewart, who finished 2nd to Busch at the Watkins Glen Road Course, couldn’t hide his admiration for the young driver.
“Kyle ran an awesome race today,” said Stewart, who has 4 victories at Watkins Glen International. “He never made a mistake today, and he was fast in all the right spots.
“I can’t be disappointed with a second-place finish to a teammate like that,” Stewart said almost conceding the win to Busch. “He’s been on fire this year. You’d cut off one of your legs almost to have the kind of year he’s having.”
You have to give Busch credit; he didn’t take Tony Stewart lightly on the final restart. “I knew Tony was going to be good. I knew that I had to get a good restart, and then I knew getting down into Turn 1 I had to get down there far enough where he wasn’t going to run on me and get to my inside and then concentrate on exiting that corner and then to the esses,” said Busch.
“When I got a good restart I kind of mixed it up a little bit back and forth a little bit, whichever which way and he didn’t expect me to go that soon and when I did I got a good launch and just concentrated on my exit of Turn 1. I didn’t get in there too hard, I didn’t wheel hop it or nothing, I just blew the entry, and then just to get off the corner and get up through the esses and into the inner loop. That’s probably where our race was won, just on that restart.”
The ESPN TV broadcast crew couldn’t say enough good things about Kyle Busch’s road racing skills. They even went so far as to say that Busch was undefeated on NASCAR road courses this year. While Kyle did win at Watkins Glen, Mexico City, and Infineon — someone should tell those guys that Kyle lost the Nationwide road course race Saturday at Watkins Glen — Marcos Ambrose did in fact win that race.
There were a few boos form the grandstands as Kyle comically counted to 8 on his fingers as he emerged from his winning Toyota Camry at the start finish line - counting the number of Sprint Cup wins he has scored so far in 2008.
But, there were also cheers as Busch made his signature bow to the fans in celebrating his 12th NASCAR Sprint Cup victory.
After taking the checkered flag Busch quipped over the team radio: “I’m sorry, what slump?” Kyle was referring to comments made by his former Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon.
Gordon said on Friday that he thought Carl Edwards was the man to beat for the Championship - not Kyle Busch. “They just haven’t shown to me what they were showing earlier in the season,” said Gordon, the 4 time champion.
“I would have thought at the Brickyard and Pocono they would have really shined, and they didn’t. I think they’re showing some weakness right now.”
Kyle seemed to take Gordon’s comments in stride, and was happy to let his race car do the talking for him.
“It’s a head game, and we’re playing it,” said Busch in response to Gordon’s barbs. “I mean, we’re just out here to race our race and concentrate on making our car the fastest in practice and fastest in qualifying as best we can do and make it handle for happy hour and then go out there and try to race it and race with the rest of these guys.”
“You’ve just got to keep going, and those statements will be made, but you can’t concentrate on that, you’ve got to concentrate on your effort.”
“They can keep trying to play these mind games,” said Busch. “We’ll just keep winning.”
Crew chief Steve Addington also slung a few arrows back at The No. 24 driver. “I can’t believe it,” said Addington, the winning crew chief. “We don’t win a race in three or four weeks, and we’re in a bad slump?”
Dale Earnhardt Jr didn’t have anything for Busch, despite passing the No. 18 for the lead on lap 2. “I didn’t really enjoy today - even when we were out front,” said Earnhardt. “I was just clicking off laps, trying to get to 90. We really missed the setup.”
Even one reporter seemed to be touting Kyle Busch, asking the question “Kyle, for a guy who’s supposedly in a slump, you’ve won out of the last seven races. This year you have 14 top 10s, 13 in the top five, and eight of them with wins. You’re not very good at points racing, are you?”
So do you think Kyle Busch is the man to beat for the championship? And, does Jeff Gordon have any room to talk considering that he has yet to win this year?

I think Jeff really hates to concede to the fact someone has taken his place. It happens to all of them at one time or another. I didn’t care for Kyle at first but give credit where credit is due - the boy is good and he knows it and at some point everyone else will have to accept it. No Carl Edwards isn’t the man to beat - “Go Kyle”

I think that the entire Hendrick team is frustrated that they are not as good as Kyle Busch is and that what he has accomplished sense leaving Hendrick is more than anybody expected. Busch going to Joe Gibbs racing completed the arrogance that those teams have. Certain drivers in one owners teams are always better than the rest of the team at one time or another and you wonder why that is.

I am a die-hard Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan and have all the “8″ and “88″ gear out there; however, in all honesty, Kyle Busch IS the best driver in NASCAR today. Not far from our old Dale Earnhardt himself………do you watch Kyle’s driving style? Kyle Busch WILL be the Sprint Cup Champion this year 2008. Dale Jr is not with it anymore. I still love the boy and vote for him faithfully every single day for MPD but he will never pass Kyle Bush in the cup point standings. Jr. dropped to 4th place.

Kyle is just the Chick Hicks of NASCAR. He may be having a streak of good luck right now, but Jeff, Jimmy & even Jr have the maturity to see the Championship through to the end. Before long, someone’s going to decide they’ve had enough of his attitude & race track shenanigans & plaster him into the wall. It would be fun to see some like Carl Edwards be the one to do it! I’m sure “Mr. H” still has no regrets about getting rid of him. There is more to being a winning race team than being out front… ask Chick Hicks.

Most of the drivers have had a turn or two at the limelight. Some more than others. It is just Bush’s turn at the glory this season so far. Anyone keeping up with the sport can see that. Next thng, it will be someone else at the turn. Then we will not hear a word from the smart mouth (we don’t hear from him now when he doesn’t win). So lets just be patient and wait it out. A couple of his wins (or more) this year were really “givies” anyway. It takes a better man than Bush to be an all around winner. You have to have class, and take the blame for your own actions instead of always blaming someone else for your losses.

I’m not above admitting that Carl Edwards has a real shot at winning this thing. He has his head on straight about it and seems to be a real rounded individual. I applaud his efforts and continued steadfast efforts. I’d love to see one of the Hendrick Boy’s take it home, but truthfully, I think Carl will quietly, patiently & methodically drive away with it while all the others are scratching & clawing it out.

Sam Hornish Jr deserves the kudos for the race… he demonstrated the kind of Team Spirit that makes this sport worth watching! By no means am I suggesting everyone go around hugging & passing out daises… I like a good fight just like the next person, but get real… Kyle is just the playground bully & no one likes a bully… I just can’t wait to see who winds up putting him in his place. I still think Dale Jr. has a little grudge to settle with him. Maybe if each driver gives Kyle’s bumper a little nudge every time they get within reach he will start to understand that no one wants to put up with his attitude.

Everyone should sit back and enjoy Kyle Busch. I agree with this comment. When Dale Jr. left DEI and moved to Hendricks, he thought this was the answer and somewhere in his mind he was going to win, win, win. He thought he would set the racing world on fire. He didn’t, hasn’t, isn’t going too. Kyle has set the racing world on fire. Kyle worked hard to get where he is today, nothing has been handed to him and he appreciates where he is today and how he got there. He didn’t have a family member already in NASCAR like some of the others. You know if Dale’s name was Joe Whats His Face, he would be just another driver on the track with a low racing record.

It seems like this type of conversation comes up everytime a driver be young or old is having a great year. Some people are just not going to be satisfied with the driver, unless of course it is their driver. There is always a driver you love to hate, and it appears that Kyle is that driver at the moment. Dale Earnhardt Sr. went through it, Jeff Gordon is another right now, and then there is Kyle. I have been watching Nascar since the late 70’s and it never changes. I see a lot of Earnhardt senior in Kyle. Don’t get me wrong, he is not near the driver Dale was, as aggresive as he is, he still is not as aggressive as Dale was. Dale would knock you off of the track if you got in his way. They all can not be like Mark Marten or Carl Edwards, laid back and very composed. There are a lot more drivers out there with attitudes other than Kyle. Kyle is just in the lime light and I for one am proud of him. Go Carl Edwards.

I think the entire problem with Vile Kyle is that he walks around with that smug look on is face and with a chip on his shoulder waiting for someone to come along and knock it off. This type of attitude does not make for a championship status. STOP all the comments that the media is creating and let the owners and drivers do their thing.
NASCAR will be losing fans if the winning driver is liken to the cookie cutter tracks we are all familiar with and this becomes very boring. As an avid fan and one who gives up their Sundays, I for one am not watching the races, as I can get the results next day as now I am getting bored with Vile Kyle.

KY Bush has been real lucky this year, but it will not continue year after year. He may not win the championship this year. Jimmie Johnson is driving for the sport but to master the number of championships. The two most level headed to win the chase are Dale Jr and Carl Edwards. Look at the more consistancy Dale Jr. has has since he left DEI!!! NASCAR Rules and penalties have been the reason for slowing down the aggressiveness in these two drivers. NASCAR needs to let them race their race and show Kyle Bush he is not the “KING” but just an arrogant load mouth with the luck running his way right now unless NASCAR determines winner’s now (which would not surprise me) I am fastly loosing interest in my favorite sport. Something must be done!!!!

Haven’t you been listening to past history coversations? His Dad didn’t help him one bit!!!. Dale Sr would just as soon wreck Jr. as to race him. So shut up with Dale Jr. being handed the silver spoon in racing. He has worked himself for every bit he has. He has invested his own money in his projects he has and is a bigger man for leaving DEI.

I have been a NASCAR fan since I was a child. I was a Dale, Sr. fan before he was “known”. I was a Dale, Jr. fan when he first started racing. Anyone who says that Jr. was handed anything “on a silver platter” simply doesn’t know the history. Dale, Sr. never handed Jr. anything, Jr. had to prove himself to his father, way before he got a ride in racing. Kyle Busch is an amazing driver this year and overly aggressive, but his attitude is far from in keeping with the standard for NASCAR. Anyone who is a true race fan respects the driving ability of a driver who wins regularly, but that hardly means that we should respect his disrespect of all of the other very talented drivers on the track.

I admire the fact that Dale Jr. took the leap & stepped out on his own. It shows his maturity and growth. He could have continued to hold on to the hope that the wicked step-mother was some day going to respect him, but it is obvious he made the right choice. Too bad Dale Jr. couldn’t have taken more people with him when he left D.E.I. He seems to share the same approach as “Mr. H”… take care of your people & they will take care of you. I think we are going to see GREAT things growing between JR Motorsports & Hendrick Motorsports. I think this is the Dale Jr. his “Daddy” knew he could be!!!
What has K.B. (Oh I mean Kyle… I forgot K.B. could also be his older brother Kurt) contributed, other that attitude? Read a little more “Debbie.”

Why was qualifying cancelled by Nascar? It wasn’t the rain cause it didn’t rain. Hmmmmmm.. Racing under the lights means prime time $$$ for Nascar and less postponements. Introducing rain tires for competition use will mean more $$$ for Nascar without having to postpone and rerun races. Cancelling qualifying this week so Junior starts on the front row is good for Nascar they say. Changing the final ten championship slots to twelve helps Nascar too…… if you know what I mean.

Dale wants to be himself and win on his own merits. He has done a lot better this year than last year. As for Kyle, Lindac you are absolutely correct - when he kills someone maybe Nascar will do something about him. Quite Frankly, His arrogance and ignorace are starting to bore me. A good racer shows respect for his fellow drivers, his sponsors, his team owner, and his car. A good driver will not wreck his own car or others just because he has something to prove - mainly to himself. Baby Busch presents no respect whatsoever and has so much to learn about diplomacy. I’ll stick with the Hendrick boys who show a lot more maturity and class.

First of all I would like to say Kyle Bush is good, he is very good. I would never take that away from the boy. Key word being boy. But to say he is the best, come on people. On any given day any given driver can be the best. I have seen Smoke handle his ride in places that Kyle could only dream of. We have all seen The Biff drive his ride when most other driver would run and hide. Never count Carl out, the man is good. Jimmy is a champion and a good one. I think he will be again, maybe not this year but it ain’t over till its over. Jeff became a good champion and could be again. Then there is JR. Steady, consistant and cool. Do I think Kyle will win the championship this year, maybe, maybe not. It ain’t over. I was a racer for several years and I would rather be lucky than good anyday. There is an old saying I am sure most of you have heard “The sun don’t shine on the same dogs but all the time”. There are a lot of dogs out there scrapping for the same bone and beleave me each and every one of them has more class and sportsmanship than Kyle will ever dream of.

Yes Kyle Busch has a big mouth and all Hendricks fans wants to see him loose but it is what it is and he’s hot and you got to admit he can drive, you don’t get lucky that many times. They’ll be something that will shut him up and it probably will be Joe Gibbs & Nascar after a couple of altercations in the foreseen future like his team-mate Stewart went through. Until then man-up or woman-up and admit it and show that your not the big mouth that he is and go on about your racing support.

I seem to remember DW being called “Jaws” for being the same way. Like Joe Louis used to say,”If you can do it, it isn’t bragging.” But, in Nascar, like everywhere else, every dog has his day in the sun. Where everything just falls in place. There are few Dale Earnhardts that were consistantly good for years. Of course, he just didn’t give a s***, and drivers knew it and got out of his way!In this modern era of squeaky clean drivers, that drink milk, He was a throwback to the days when once you got in your car you didn’t have any friends, and if you messed with somebody they’d retaliate. Well, I guess we all agree that Kyle is immature & irresponsible, even if you like him. He may or may not luck into this Championship. I’d really like to see some of the guys with real class & respect for their fellow drivers, who have worked hard, with the title at the end of the season… Jimmy, Dale Jr, Carl, Jeff, Smoke… I believe that if he continues on the current path his attitude is leading him, he’ll manage to self destruct and spin out of control before he can make it all the way to the end. Either that or his head will just get so big, it will just explode inside his helmet!!! I hate the thought of some one having to lose their life before his shenanigans are curtailed! Everyone should just take a little nip at his bumper any time they are around him! Maybe he’d realize no one likes his tactics.

As for the title of the article; “Is Jeff Gordon Now Kyle Busch’s New Best Friend” I don’t think anyone wants to be Kyle’s BFF. Even his team mates don’t trust him not to wreck them!

I have only been a NASCAR fan for the last couple of years, wish I’d have started watching years earlier though. I do remember when I started that everyone talked about how something needed to be done about how Smoke was driving and about how his attitude was with the media, now everyone is on Kyle for the same thing. I admit he has a smart mouth, but so does the arrogent driver of the 42!! I don’t think racing was supposed to be a friendly, go out of your way to get along with eveyone, watch what you say sport. Sure would have liked to see Dale Sr. and Kyle race for the championship, I bet there would have been some beeps in taht interview…

Remember last year and the year before when Jimmie Johnson dominated the race track. You never got the smart mouth comments coming from him, he was always the gentleman. Jimmie and Chad make a great team, and never once rubbed the other drivers faces in their luck or winning streaks race after race. It is nice to win races but you have to be a team player as well! I am at the point that I just want anyone at all to win except for Kyle. As soon as I see Kyle wins a race, I turn it off so I do not have to listen or see his immaturity.

kyles first 7 wins should be with a * because toyota was running with 15 more horsepower than all other teams. the brickyard was the first race this year they were not allowed the extra horsepower

Let Kyle run his mouth. Let him think and act as a king. What did he do last year? And the year before? The reason he is doing better is because Nascar upped the hp on the Toyotas to help them out. So the credit to Nascar…not to Kyle. When he wins 4 Championships, as Jeff has, and PROVES he is a winner, then maybe he will gain some respect.
Until then…..GO #24!!!

Quote–”the brickyard was the first race this year they were not allowed the extra horsepower.”
Actually, no.
NASCAR made a rule change in the Nationwide series which required the Toyotas to run a different tapered spacer.
This was only in the Nationwide series, and did not affect the Sprint Cup series.

I’ll probable get slammed for this… but oh well! Every since they made the engine change to the Nationwide cars and not the Sprint Cup cars, I’ve wondered what is the significant difference between the two. Can anyone explain to me why they had to change the Nationwide cars & not the Sprint Cup cars?

I totally agree with RAN and Greg. The idiot is winning because of LUCK and that will eventually run out and hopefully before he can win a championship. He also should be put on probation like Tony Stewart and Joey Logano. Would serve him right. Nothing but a obnoxious little tit cry baby. He WILL get his and I hope real soon!!!

Luck for Kyle Busch come on! Any educated NASCAR fan realizes that a three-tiered phenomenon wins races, i.e., Car design, Race Car driver skill/talent and Crew Chief/Pit crew. The reality of the “Kyle Bush” bashing is partly due to his arrogance (23, remember when you were 23) but serves as a justification for “other fans” as well. In other words, people can easily substantiate their favorite driver’s, car, and pit team’s lack of performance by “bad-mouthing” other teams and drivers, especially Busch. Psychologically, this disapproval tactic gives these “other fans” an opportunity to rationalize the less than adequate performance of their chosen teams. As far as the Neanderthal bumping and pushing of NASCAR racing, it should be left to the vertebrate paleontologists and kept a relic of the past. NASCAR has evolved, and as such, that evolution demands a cleaner race. Drivers should not be allowed (including Kyle Bush) to bully their way around the racetrack and bump others in order to secure a win. For the old school fans of the bump and grind mentality, there is always boxing.

I am so angry at KB that I do not buy or let my children buy M&M’s. How can a candy company for children sponsor and condone the behavior of that driver, his actions, his reputation, his mouth, and everything else that arrogant bully represents. If M&M doesn’t care than I am through with them also. He is taking alot of the fun out of racing and I don’t care if I go to any races next year. Alot of our racing club feels the same way. He is making a fool of NASCAR. They can’t or won”t control him . They try to mandate the 18 and 20 in the Nationwide but they do nothing about the 18 in the cup. How sad because there are alot of good drivers this year and only a few are destroying the sport.
