By the time Dale Earnhardt Jr made his first Cup Series start he already had 1 championship in the NASCAR Busch Series.

Dale Jr's 1st career start in NASCAR's top series came on May 30, 1999 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coca Cola 600 at the age of 24.

It didn't take Junior long to show he had the right stuff. He qualified 8th for that 1st race. That was faster than his father, who started 15th, and faster than Jeff Gordon's 10th place qualifying effort.

The No. 8 wasn't able to maintain his position once the race started, and by lap 78 Junior went a lap down to leader and eventual race winner Jeff Burton.

"When we first started the race our car was terribly loose I was just trying to get out of the way from everybody and not make a fool of myself," said Earnhardt Jr. "I was surprised what those guys can do with those cars and how well they drive them."

Junior started his career in the No.8 Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt Inc. He finished the race in 16th position, 3 laps down, but running at the finish.

After the race Dale Jr sought out his father to ask how he did.

"He said, 'You did good and stayed out of trouble,' " Earnhardt Jr. said. "I wanted to know he was happy as a car owner and a father."

Although the elder Earnhardt seemed to indicate his son needed to work on his strength and stamina.

"Right now, my program is calling a pizza joint and drinking a Budweiser," Junior quipped. "But my daddy is right, I need to be on the treadmill and working out."

The biggest mistake Dale Jr made during the race occurred on pit road. He was having trouble finding his pit, and nearly pulled into teammate Steve Parks pit stall.

"I just wasn't thinking," Earnhardt Jr said.. "We had some difficulty there and my spotter was directing me to Steve Park's pit."

Tony Eury was Dale Jr's crew chief that day, buy also the day before. Eury is Dale's regular crew chief in the Busch series, but that weekend h pulled double-duty calling the shots on the cup side as well.

Dale Jr seemed relaxed and confident of his chances in the days leading up to his cup debut.

''Realistically, anything can happen to us here,'' said Earnhardt. ''We need to go ahead and face the music here and get down to business and get good at it as quick as we can. Realistically, I wouldn't put a top 10 out of the picture.''

He earned $36,250 for that 1st race.
