Dale Jr talks about Mom, Dad and racing
Dale Earnhardt Jr talks about his life growing up and how he got his start in racing
Every now and then someone will say to me that the only reason Dale Jr is racing is because his last name is Earnhardt. That he had his racing career and everything handed to him.
I don’t believe that for one second. Watch this video and you’ll understand, and please share it with anyone else who might need to see it.
“When the house burned down we didn’t have nothing,†said Dale Jr
That was when Junior and his sister Kelley went to live with their father and Teresa. “The last thing she wanted was 2 instant kids,†Junior said of his stepmother.
Earnhardt had to learn on his own how to race and live on no money.
“I never saw the silver spoon. Dale Earnhardt Jr had to work for what he got,“ said Don Hawk, former president of DEI.

I have always believed in Junior and always will. Never have liked Theresa because I thought she was just money hungry.

I love Dale Jr.! I have a son that looks so much like him and resembles his personality so close,it is unbelievable. I’d love to get the two of them together, they would have a blast. Anyway, Junior is a great guy, giving and loving. He is also a gentleman, which is all but lost now days. I believe Teresa absolutely adored Dale Sr. I also believe teresa would have preferred that Kelly and Junior would have been step kids from a distance. I am glad that Junior can be close to Taylor in spite of all the past. After all we all want better lives for the next generation. God bless everyone at Christmas. Junior, always a fan, never disappointed!

I agree Dale is great at what he does. I think too that teresa is spoiled and a money grubber. My heart goes out to Dale,Kery and Kelley. The day Dale jr decided to tell the world who he was going to be racing for was the day I lost my husband,to a massive heart attack. He too was aJr fan, actually he turned me on to Nascar.and my son and I still keep up with it. I do believe that Teresa gave the kids a raw deal! she should have taken Jr’s offer.

I think that this is a superb example of why Dale Jr., is Dale Jr. , and not anyone else. Family, Love, determination, pride in the family name, the closeness of the family unit, Mom, Kelly, Kerry, and Dad, along with cousins, Made him the Racer’s racer, that he is today…Good Job and keep Going JuneBug…..
[Reply]
I’ve always known the history of the Earnhardt family for many years, as I first saw Junior at the racetracks when he was still a towheaded little boy. He would be in the winner’s circle with his Dad with that look of adulation of pride he had for his Dad. I basically had the same kind of childhood as Junior and felt I could understand how he was feeling. He became my idol with his first race and still is to this day. Whether his name be Earnhardt, Jones, Smith etc; I will always keep him as my very good friend, the best and most popular driver
See you in 2010, Junior !!!!!!!

HE IS A GOOD DRIVER AND HE HAS HAD TRIED TO DRIVE IN THE PAST LIKE HIS DAD BUT NASCAR WOULD NOT LET HIM. HE HAS A GOOD CREW CHIEF, CREW, AND THEY ARE ALL NEW, SO THEY NEED TIME. HE HAS BEEN IN SEVERAL ACCIDENTS THAT WERE KINDA OF LIFE THREATING, GIVE THE KID A BREAK,YES HE COMES FROM A RACING FAMILY AND HE DEFINITELY HAS THE NACK, SO LEAVE HIM ALONE.
CONGRATULATIONS JIMMIE, CHAD AND ALL THE 48 CREW, HOPE TO SEE YA NEXT YEAR WITH THE CHAMPIONSHIP, JUST NEVER CHANGE YOUR ATTIUDE OR FORGET US YOUR FANS. LOVE THE LOWES COMMERCIALS, KEEP THEM COMING. BE CAREFUL PLAYING GOLF.

VERY WELL SAID. More than once SR said HE was building that company for HIS children and that biotch messed it all up. so so sad.
I grew up loving SR so automatically went with JR. Jimmie is my fav because that is my first name, and I am a female and when i saw that Lowes car roll out the first time, I thought “Hayyyyy I PAID for that” haha since thats where I always have shopped.
JR’s day is coming! Like JJ said more than once, ‘next year we will have JR up front with us’. JR just ended up in one mess after another this year, many not of his doing.
I love Nascar. It is THE sport. Loud, outside, has wheels and down home athletes, what more could you want? GO TEAM HENDRICK, he too, Mr. H is one remarkable man.
Merry Christmas to all and less than 3 months and its back to racing! yaaaaaaaaaa

Good video. I’ve always believed Jr. had somewhat of a troubled childhood. I’m sure it was hard as a child to adore your Father and Sr. was so busy, he didn’t have much time to spend with him. That happens in lots of families. Jr. has grown up to be one of the most respected racers in the sport and I do believe one day he will meet the right one, settle down, get married and have lots of history to tell his offsprings. Looking forward to 2010 and we Jr. fans will be pulling as usual and I believe this is the year he will pull out of his slump. GoooooJr…

I have never thought dale jr was handed his racing career or had the silver spoon in his mouth per se. I think he he has probally got down in the tenches and worked the hardest for what he has. at least that the pesonality he gives off to me and I respect him for all that work ( learn it yourself, put it back together yourself) that can only get you faarther in racing and the world in general. Go JR. I look forward to 2010

I have always believed in Dale Jr. He has always worked for everything he got, this video is very enlightening and everyone should see it! Go DALE!!!!

Dale Jr. I have been a fan of yours for years.Don’t ever sell yourself short because you are lot better than Johnson and always will be. You see Knaus and johnson are cheaters and they think that they are better than anyone else guess what they are not and also Johnson is not a Super Star. He is not in the same league with your father and it is about time that Nascar woke up to the fact that Knaus is cheating every time that car goes on the track.
[Reply]
I have to agree with the other fans, Dale, Jr. is definetly his own man. And he will be in the winners circle again in 2010 – he wasn’t handed anything on a silver spoon, his Dad was tough, but he loved you Jr., and he made you the great man you are today. Keep your chin up and your faith in God and your family, and always remember what your Dad taught you. Bless you and your family. I will always be your fan, you are number one with me.
[Reply]
I agree with you Sherri, I loved Dale Sr, but Dale Jr is my man. He does believe in God and Country. I grew up in a hard life, but it was good. Jr has respect, he has a little temper, but don’t we all. We I have a big temper. But Jr will be in the winner circle next year and I go to both races at Michigan International Speedway and on race day, no one calls or comes over, I have to see Jr. God Bless you JuneBug, your number 1 always, don’t listen to people that aren’t really you fans, your true fans will always be there for you.
See you in June and August, can’t wait.
I wish I were 30 some year younger, I agree with granny 67.

To Sandy – I believe the video came from ESPN’s SportsCentury – Dale Earnhardt, Jr. It originally aired in the summer of 2008. I have it on DVR. Keep an eye out for it on ESPN Classic, they replay every so often.

People that pass judgement on Jr really don’t know him. You only have to listen to him to see that he doesn’t ask anything from anyone. He came from the school of hard knocks but that made him the person he is now. If he makes a mistake, he owns up to it and admits it, He doesn’t sugarcoat anything or whine. His Dad loved him and was proud of him, but he was a busy man trying to build an empire that was over to soon. I feel sure Sr would roll over if he could see that empire now that his children was forced out. Jr did not try to take over DEI for nothing but couldn’t make a deal with the stepmother to buy his share. She didn’t even want to give him rights to his own name so you can imagine how maternal she was to Sr’s children when they were little. She sent them both to military school as soon as she could to get them out of her way. I think Jr wanted Sr’s approval so much that now he’s gone it probally doesn’t mean as much because he misses his Dad so much.
Jr. does take care of his family. I think they are all employed by him and thats alot of pressure on a young man’s shoulders. But Jr we are your family too and we will always support anything you do. Make a change or whatever and Jr Nation will be there. How many other drivers can say that. We will love you whether you come in 1st or 42nd. Just have fun, you deserve it

I could not agree with Regan more, most definitely a class act.
When Jr said he had stomach troubles in high school, I know exactly where he’s coming from there. Just learning how to let go of things you cannot control takes a lot of character and determination, it ain’t easy.
Give ‘em hell in 2010! We’ll ALWAYS be there for ya.

Junior is great, whether he comes in 1st of 43rd, it doesn’t matter. Fans are fan and I am definitely a Dale, Jr. fan. It is awful the way Teresa treated him; at least she could have given his No. 8, it was his and will always be in our minds. Dale, Sr. would probably have kicked her out of DEI if he had know she would treat his kids the way she did. Teresa – shame is not the word for you. Greed is the word. Keep going Jr. 2010 is going to be good. Love you dearly as a driver and as a person.

If everyone views this video as most of us do, the message just tells us what we already knew, and that is, “JUNIOR IS HIS OWN SELF MADE MAN”. He is not riding on anyone’s personality but his own !!!! All he ever wanted, was the love and approval of a career minded Dad……….who he loved!!!

IF DALE HAD MORE CHILDREN THAN, DALE AND KELLY
FUNNY HOW KERRY GETS ALONG WITH TERESA. GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE MONEY TROUBLES DALE SR. HAD TILL TERESA TOOK OVER AND HELPED HIM. HE HAS EVEN SAID SHE IS THE ONE THAT HELPED HIM BUILD WHAT HE HAD. THE WILL COULD HAVE LEFT THE CHILDREN SOMETHING IF HE WANTED TO. HE LEFT IT TO HE WANTED. SO GET OVER IT.
ALL YOU PEOPLE CALL YOURSELF EARNHARDT FANS, WHAT DO YOU THINK HE WOULD HAVE TO SAY THE WAY YOU TALK AND TREAT HIS WIFE. GIVE HER CREDIT
SHE COULD HAVE TURNED DOWN KELLY AND DALE LIVING WITH THEM AND PUT THEM IN BOARDING SCHOOL BUT SHE DID NOT. WHY DID MAMA NEVER COME BACK AROUND TILL DALE JR. GOT IN THE BIG LEAGUE. WHEN SHE GOT ON HER FEET, AND REMARRIED SHE COULD HAVE COME AND GOT HER CHILDREN.

You speak of Dale Sr’s money troubles until Theresa????? If she was so great in the money department why is she now just looking a at museum where DEI “WAS”?? She is now the little partner with Ganassi right???? The only thing she does is try and think up some other thing to put Dale Sr’s name and #3 on to try and make a buck. I don’t think her great mind has gotten her anywhere since she lost Dale Jr except down the drain! Remember she lost her cash cow to Hendrick, good enough for her, she got what she deserved.

I agree with you, reguarding Dale jr mom. She sent the kids to live with their dad & Teresa when their house burned down, but never came around till Jr. made it big. Yeah sure Teresa may have made some mistakes but NOBODY knows what Dale Sr.will said reguarding what the kids get, for all we know Dale Sr.probadly knew the kids mom would pop up if something was to happen to him,so he protected them by leaving Teresa in charge. I think Kelly mess Dale up & maybe talked him into leaving DEI because she had problems with Teresa being in charge. Teresa was the one who help Dale Sr. get to where he was. He used to wouldnt talk to the press, or anything until Teresa got with him & helped him. I dont like how things ended up for Jr. & yeah maybe Teresa wouldnt go out & spent money for some things that Jr & kelly thought they needed to help the cars win more races BUT EVERYBODY SEEMS TO HAVE FORGOTTEN DALE SR DIDNT APPROVE OF LOT OF THINGS NASCAR TRIED TO DO TO HELPED THEIR DRIVERS. MAYBE TERESA FELTED THE SAME WAY OR MAYBE IT BECAUSE NO SOONER THAN DALE DIED NASCAR CHANGED EVERYTHING & SHE WAS HURTED BY IT. THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN ACTUALLY ANSWER THAT IS TERESA HERSELF BUT NOBODY SEEMS TO ASK HER THEY JUST ASUME THE WORST IN HER. BUT DALE NEEDS TO WORRY BOUT MORE HIS DRIVING THAN GOING ROUND STIRRING THE POT WHEN IT COMES TO HIS STEPMOM THAT SOMETHING THATS PERSONAL BETWEEN THE FAMILY NOT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE & STICK THEIR NOSES INTO SOMETHING WHEN THEY REALLY DONT KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.
[Reply]
I think people should stay out of his personal life and stick to his racing only.
[Reply]
As I have always said “Never judge a person because of it’s last name.” People out there think that just because you are a member of a family that things are handed to you with a silver spoon, yes there is exceptions to this rule, but I have rarely seen any Nascar drivers that have not had to work for what they have today. I have always had respect for Nascar drivers they earn what they fight for. I have always had respect for the Earnhardt family except Theresa, I believe that she has done her step children and her own child wrong. This was a family business and for her to take that away, well she will have to deal with that when the time comes. I will always have faith is Dale Jr. and I wish him and his family the best, they are better people because of this situation.
Have Faith in 88,
Judith

Sure, many people grew up with hard times, not just JR,but I for one am very impressed with how he has handled all that life a thrown at him. Not many of us can say we’ve had to face the death of our beloved parent in such a terrible way, and have to mourn in full view of millions.
I’ve only been a Nascar fan a short while, since 2003, and never saw Senior drive, but Jr has always impressed me as being a very well raised young man that any mother would be proud of.
He’s not ‘my driver’, but there is hardly a week that goes by that if my driver isn’t doing as well, I hope and pray that JR does. I would love to meet him someday, to tell him how much I respect him. And I too, would love to click off 30 years or so, to give him a ‘run for his money’ (of course not really for his money….)
I hope he gets the Championship in 2010.
[Reply]
I have had the chance to meet Jr. & each time I found him to be respectful of his fans & his role in being ONE of NASCAR’S MOST POPULAR DRIVERS in the last 6 yrs.He also took the job of asking people not to bad mouth Teresa out of respect for his sister Taylor. I just wish people would back off Jr. for awhile.Let him get his NEW TEAM together & YOU will SEE the OLD JR. COME RACING BACK.He has Jr.NATION BEHIND HIM,ALWAYS.There was alot I could say against Teresa but it is she who has to live with what she has done & in the END PEOPLE will see who was RIGHT!!!!MY MONEY IS ON JR.

Linda, I agree with you whole wholeheartedly, the past is past and we need to live for tomorrow. We all have to pay for any mistakes we make in life, and Teresa is doing that now.
I never met Jr. but I base my opinions on life’s choices and she has made hers. Let’s keep our comments on the question at hand.

I have absolutely no respect for Theresa what so ever. She has and always be a gold digger. She set her sights on Dale Sr., saw the $ signs and went for it. Any fool can see that. What happened to DEI after Sr. passed??? Right down the river. I agree with you that Sr. probably is turning in his grave, but not because of what people think of his so called wife, but because of what she did and has done to Dale Jr. and Kelly. She is getting just what she deserves and hopefully she will be in the same shoes that Dale Jr. and Kelly were in when they lost their house and had to be placed with a woman who did not care what happened to either of them. Just remember Theresa, what goes around, comes around and I WILL be here to see it happen. I believe it is called “Karma”????
[Reply]
I always have been and always be a Dale Jr. fan. I knew about his troublesome childhood and how hard it was for him. He was handed NOTHING and like the video said, he had to work hard to get to where he is at today. I truly believe he will make an awesome comeback and when he does, I will still be here cheering for him. GO JR. We all know you can do it and you do too!!! I am still praying for you. See you in 2010!!!

I am hoping that the time will come when Jr. can race under his own Flag. The folks at JRM all care about him, they have his back. It is so important to work under those kind of circumstances. Success is easier if everyone has the same goals. Hang in there Jr., things will get better for you.

Look people just as you all didnt know that Jr. had to work for everything you dont know all that has happened between he and Teresa. Give the woman a BREAK. She raided those kids as if they were her own and she loves them. Maybe some of her decisions arent what you wanted to happen but I really think that in the long run she has ALL of Dale’s childrens interests at heart. They will get DEI one day and She is just trying to make sure there is something to get. How would you feel if you had lost the love of your life BOOM just like that. Some of her decisions may have been made out of greif. Just leave her alone. Jr will be fine and he will race as hard as ever. He is a good driver and just needs to find his groove. Remember Jr loves Teresa too they just dont get along right now. Nothing is forever. Good luck in 2010 Jr

I do not think that Dale Jr. had his racing career handed to him. He has worked hard for everything he has gotten. Just because that his last name is Earnhardt. I am a big fan of Dale Jr. and I hope that he has a good year next year.

I remember when Jr. first got in to racing. He uncle Tony Eury Sr. had asked Dale Sr. of the two boys which one could make it in Nascar. Dale Sr. said that it would be Dale Jr. because he has the talent for the sport. I hope that Dale Jr. will be around for along time.
[Reply]
I agree with what you’ll said 1000%. Jr. had to work for everything he got. I remember hearing Dale,Sr. talk about making his children earn everything, if they didn’t work for it, he said, they would not appreciate it, and that’s why he made it so hard on them. Teresa and Sr. shipped Kelley and Jr. off to boarding school, I’ve also heard that they first sent Jr. off and then Kelley said she wanted to go to take care of Jr., and she’s done that all their lives. Kerry didn’t even meet his dad until I believe he was 18 of so. All those children never had a silver spoon in their mouths, maybe Taylor is the only one. This is one of the reasons I love Jr. so much, he’s a hard working dude and very down to earth, maybe even shy, I don’t think he likes to be in front of the camera too much either.

I completely agree, it is obvious that Teresa is a spoiled, money hunger person. I mean how can you let your husband’s kids not be racing for the company he built. I think Dale, Sr. was an awesome driver however I recently watched a video about Dale, Jr. that ESPN did and I hate to say this but I lost some of my respect of Sr. for the way he treated Jr., Kelly and Kerry.
