Confessions of a Disappointed Dale Earnhardt Jr Fan

My name is Casey, and I’m a Dale Jr fan.

Junior. I first heard about you in 1998 when you showed up at Daytona to run the Busch race. I didn’t have a favorite driver at the time, but I was keeping an eye on you.

When you won 13 races and 2 Championships in 2 years in the Busch Series you had my attention.

When you won your first Cup race at Texas in 2000, in just your 12th Cup start that’s when I decided you would be my driver. It had taken Jeff Gordon 42 tries to get his first win. It took Dale 16 to get his.

You really gave us fans a reason to be fans. And not just with the way you drove the race car, but with the way you handled yourself off the track as well.

My heart went out for you after the Daytona 500 in 2001. And then again one week later when you crashed on the first lap at Rockingham.

But you came back to Daytona in July and put that No. 8 in the Winner’s Circle. I was so proud of you.

You owned Daytona and Talladega there for a while. You even won at Talladega 4 times in a row. I think you learned a thing or two about drafting and restrictor plate racing from Dale.

You’ve won the Daytona 500.

You’ve won 6 races in one season in 2004, and you have 18 victories so far in your career. That’s 39th on NASCAR’s All Time Win List.

You’ve contended for Championships, and I believe you will win one.

But I was disappointed when you left DEI. I thought you should have stayed there and worked things out with Teresa. I think DEI would have been a NASCAR dynasty with you as the driver and majority owner. Teresa just would not give you the tools and equipment that you knew you needed, and she wouldn’t work with you to make a deal for you to take over the company.

Funny how as soon as you were out the door Teresa was down the street making a deal with Chip Ganassi.

I was disappointed when you went to Hendrick Motorsports. After all this was Jeff Gordon’s and Jimmie Johnson’s team.

How many wins and Championships did they have between them?

I was excited when you won the Budweiser Shootout. Your first race in the 88 car.

You were running up front almost every week. You won at Michigan. You should have won at Richmond when Kyle Busch wrecked you at the end of the race.

But then the wheels just seemed to fall off.

I was disappointed when you had a string of problems on pit road last year. You said yourself that you lost confidence when that happened.

“Coming down pit road and getting in your stall is like breathing. You don’t even think it when you’re doing it, you just do it.

“It really made me start thinking about it, and I backtracked – I actually got a complex about it and became sort of something I definitely was not confident about.” ~ Dale Earnhardt Jr as quoted in The Sporting News.

I was disappointed when drivers, broadcasters and fans seemed to be turning against you after last year’s Daytona 500, blaming you for the big wreck. I’ve watched the replays closely, and you were obviously forced into that position. The wreck was, as they say, just racing.

I was disappointed when Rick Hendrick took Tony Eury Jr away from you rather that giving the two of you the support you needed.

And I was disappointed when the 2009 season ended without seeing you in Victory Lane.

But I am encouraged by what I hear from you this year.

You sound excited and ready to get down to business.

I especially like what you said about being ruthless.

“We’re just going to go out there and try our hardest and be ruthless from the first lap to the last,” Earnhardt Jr said.

Dale Jr, this is going to be your year. This is going to be your year.

I believe you can do it.

But more importantly, I believe that you believe that you can do it.

Can Dale Jr do it in 2010?

    3. Wow Casey you said the way we all feel. That was great testiment to Jr. I also believe he will do good this year. BUT regardless, we are fans and always will be fans win or loose. I to was disappointment when he made the move, but he had to do what was best for him to grow but now have the 88 stuff and my “8″ is proudly displayed. Good luck this year Jr. and go get em.     6. We never stopped believing in him. He just needs to believe in himself. The media is enough to make you stop believing in yourself the way they are always picking everything to pieces and making something out of nothing.

    7. I really believe Jr. will win more this year.
    He will go into Daytona with fire in his eyes and keep it there for the rest of the year. He will go to the Chase and win the Championship this year. It’s Jr. Year – 2010.

    10. I do believe Jr. can get it together this year and WIN a few times. I proudly wear my Jr. hats almost everywhere I go. I will always like him for the person he is and the driver we all know he can be. I still have faith in number 88!!! Go Jr.!!!!

    12. this will be dales year, we as jr fans do believe that. also we as jr fans have always believed in him and what he could do. i also believe that if he would have been given control of dei,it would have been a great thing. i have a home in mooresville,and i have driven by dei many,many times and you can tell its not the same, its a ghost town around there, you see sr’s house behind the shop and think about what has been done with his empire, and we all know that if he were around today this would not be going on. but time has past, and the wounds are healed and we must move on. so lets all get behind hendrick and his great teams and support the 88 like we have never supported anyone. i am also happy to see that nascar has eased up on the “brick” of a car, we need more competitive racing, so lets get the downforce we need and lettem trade some paint, and bumpdraft. thanks for reading…………b hewitt

    13. I also believe that Junior needs his own team and needs to make decisions that he feels good about instead of having to bow down to Hendrick….you know his favs are Johnson & Gordon. He only wanted Jr, because of his fan appeal.If I am not mistaken, this is the last year on his contract. Use this year to build his own empire to far surpass DEI.

    15. There is no way Jr could have stayed at DEI and worked things out. At DEI, it is Theresa’s way or no way. She should have tried harder to work things out with Jr. She is the wicked stepmother and I feel that she has always been after the money since she was instrumental in marketing Dale Sr., making millions off his name while he worked the ranch and raced. We went to DEI after Dale was gone and were supposed to have a dinner presentation with Jr. & Theresa & another speaker. At that time, I was really looking forward to meeting her and respected her as a female businesswoman. She sent Jr. off to test tires, the other speaker was a no show, and she had a last minute business meeting to fly off to – on a holiday weekend. We paid a lot for this experience and ended up with a photo presentation and memories of Dale. So Theresa is the boss and that is how it is at DEI. Jr may be less aggressive than Dale but he knows first-hand the dangers of racing where Dale was a hard-working tough guy and just went for it all out. I think Jr still does things for Dale and he will always be popular because he is a nice guy and he is a true Champion. Go Jr!

    Theresa is a # one – well let’s leave out the word.

    YES. Jr. should be there because his dad worked hard to build the business for his kids.

    I firmly believe that Sr. has divorced her up in HEAVEN.There would be no Canassi if Sr. were alive.

    Theresa has always been ‘trouble’ only now she is TROUBLE.

    She wanted a higher per centage of his take in for his souveniers. That broad will NEVER spend all the money she has!!!!

    17. It is a shame Jr. had to leave DEI but he did have to because he was being treated unfairly by Teresa. DEI was his dad’s legacy to Jr. As sad as it turned out, it’s water over the dam, it’s in the past and Jr. and his fans have to look to the future. I have the utmost faith in his ability and I will always stand behind him and support him as a fan. I look forward to a much better season this year for him but, win or lose, he is and will always be tops on my list.

    19. I am a huge Dale Jr. fan, he is the most sincere and honest person in Nascar. He is a winner, that has been proven. He just needs the chance to voice his opinion about how things should be done to help him achieve his goals. He is not a confrontational person and people tend to think that he should be more like his Daddy but Jr. has to be his own man and not let anyone tell him otherwise. You can tell he wants a championship in the Sprint Cup Series bad but he is not willing to sacrifice himself or others to achieve it, that is just his personality. He will be a winner in my mind regardless if he wins another race or not.I will stand behind him and his decisions regardless. Only he knows what is right for him. Go Jr. 88….my winner!

    and I agree with you 100%. The first time I went to a race (Busch), Jr. tamed The Monster.
    He got my attention, and I became a fan. As time went on, I cried and I cheered, but I have never given up on Jr. I was very angry at
    Theresa, when she treated Kelly & Jr. worst than lepers, and had the guts to break the chain of the Earnhart legacy. But remember, she IS NOT a true Earnhart. I sadly rejoiced when she had to park the #8.
    Let’s not look back. This is a new season, and
    Jr. is a new man. I forsee celebrating many wins.
    I hope Jr. reads this.

    24. Well I have been a Dale Jr. fan for a long time and will always be. He may not win alot of races but he has a heart and the will to continue racing even after the death of his father ata race track he loves. I know that his day will come and he will win again. But i will stand behind him. And as far as those who don’t like him, well thats your decision. At least he doesn’t pout or cry about not winning and is willing to take the blame if he did something wrong. So Dale Jr I think this will be your year ..Good luck.

    25. I too was disapointed when Dale was not winning any races. To me it seemd like Kyle was out to get him and for that I don’t care for the guy (Kyle that is. He couldd of done it if it wouldn’t of been for all the car troubles and Kyle BUT YOU WILL WIN THIS YEAR DALE. GOT DALE JR!

    32. I was ready to ream this guy out but am still not sure. I have said it before and I will say it again. You either back your driver, good times and bad, or you are not their fan. You can be disappointed for him but don’t give him H—. I am a Tony fan but love Jr. too. When Tony did not make the chase, I wasn’t mad at him. I hurt for him. They have a lot on their shoulders besides risking their lives for our enjoyment. Back your driver, everone, which ever driver you like. But have his back, good times and bad.

Although I have been disappointed with the string of misfortune that Dale has had, I have been proud to stand behind him just like I was to be behind his father, brother Kerry, and now his nephew, Jeffrey. A fan doesn’t turn his back on someone even if they are not doing as well as you would like them to.

Things come around and they go the way they should be and even better, this will happen with Jr. This year will be a turn around. He is my driver and always will be.     42. jr i have never ever been disappointed in you as a fan. i don’t know why a true fan would be. you have proved yourself time & time again.so i say if the fans are disappointed in you…find them another driver!i do hope 2010 will be better for you & your team,but just because you don’t win or run up front all the time, i want hold that against you. i know you are trying your best. so just be cool, and do what you can with no pressure.

    44. Casey, that was very well put. You expressed a true fan’s feelings very accurately. There is no other driver who has as much public pressure as Dale Jr, who can possibly overcome all that and end up in the winners circle. He needs time and his time will come, then watch out!! This is a truly honest, kind hearted, serious person and he will come out on top. I will not back out, I am a Dale Jr fan……to the end!

    46. I just can’t wait to see the “ruthless Jr.” at work on those racetracks this year. I truly believe he has held back simply because of all the rules the drivers are confronted with and probably afraid to bump & grind a little for fear of being penalized or fined. I think what NASCAR has told the drivers about getting out there and really racing and giving the fans a good show, will produce racing again like back in the good ole days. We are your avid fans, Jr. and as always will be pulling for you. This is definitely your year! Go, Jr.

    48. Casey, you should consider becoming a Kyle Bush fan. At least then you’d have a driver who could explain to you why or who caused him to loose. You sound a lot like him, “I’m perfect and I must know why you’re not”.
    Jr. has never promised any of his fans that he’d have a good or perfect season. He’s actually apologized to us for not winning a race and for letting us down. I believe it is called being human.

    I’m sure that Jr. doesn’t get in his race car saying to himself, “I think I’ll just go out and run into the wall, tear my car apart and take the afternoon off”.

    It is easy to be the fan of a “Winner”. A true fan stands by you through the good and the bad. In the bad times the last thing that a team, driver or player needs is for their fans to start the “well-a-well-a” crap. Now is the time that Jr. needs to know we are his fans and we will stand by him. Heck, I already believe he will be the 2010 Champion. If he is “great”, if he isn’t, there’s always next year.

    “Grow a pair” and make up your mind. Quess what? No one keeps a count of who is and who isn’t a Jr. fan. It’s your choice. Decide.

    52. Yes that was very well put Casey. I have been a Jr fan for along time. He was awesome in the Busch series and he has done well in the Sprint Cup. You got to back your driver as a fan 100% no matter what. I am sure everyone was dissapointed when he left DEI. But win or lose I will follow him wherever he goes. He has had alot of pressure on him over the years and handles it pretty well. I proudly display all the no. 8 and 88 stough and always will. 2010 will be a good year.     53. Oh what a web we weave….to use the word “disappointed” in your driver. You had to know that he (and his team) were giving what they felt was their best they had with what was happening at the time. We all have times when we hit that bump in the road that holds us back from our goals, but we can’t give up if we are to survive.
    Leaving DEI was his decision as his career was at stake with a stepmother who wanted the entire company as her own and family was secondary. How sad that she lost Jr. and at what expense?
    As a true fan, I will never give up on my driver no matter what the conditions and disappointments he may have. It’s called devotion !!!!!!

    54. I have never been disappointed in Jr. I have been disappointed for Jr. I am disappointed with the people that surround him on the cup side. All of them! I have never been angry at him, just for him. As for the previous car owner, I was so angry with her that I closed my wallet to her. In other words, I also am the owner of a Killer shirt. Closing my wallet was the only thing that I as a fan could do. I later found out that I was not the only one. That is the type of things a fan can do. Being dissapointed with Jr. for something he has no control over, last season being an example, doesn’t cut it for me. He worked with what he was given to work with. He has contracts, he has always honored those and done what he was told to do. I am also one of those that would like to see him drive for JRM, he has said that he would like to win a race driving one of his own cars. Someday, hopefully, he can drive for himself on a full time basis. I am hoping that he can again enjoy doing his job. That is what I want for him. Mamadew used the word devotion, another good term is committed. That’s me, full time!!!!

    58. Thank you DALEJRFAN88 for you post. You’ve said the exact thing I’ve been saying. People who aren’t fans of Jr. are just plain jealous of his popularity as a person, and because he has a bad season, they pick him apart. Most all of what they say really makes them look plain ignorant! If they weren’t so obsessed with Jr., they’d see many other drivers have had bad times also.

    71. Casey you’re a fair weather fan! Dale Sr had a bunch like you too. You cheer when they do good, then criticize when they have problems. Jr has had problems last year, and his ears woud have been burning if my tv had been two way, but I didn’t go on a web site and whine about it. Your a fan or your not! And if your on here to bash Jr. get off our site!!!!!!!

    73. this is to the so called fan. disappointed fan. u are not a real fan of jrs. a real fan will stand by jr no matter what. do u thuink that he is enjoying the losses? duh? i have no time for fans like u. i for one thought, the move to hendrick was very smart. mr. h is the very best in the business. jr will be back and when he does, then u change to kyle bush and u deserve him. jr i believe in u and always will.
