NASCAR Changing Green White Checkered Rule

NASCAR changing green white checkered ruleLook for another procedural rule change from NASCAR before Thursday’s Gatorade Duels. I have heard from a source inside NASCAR that the race leader will now be required to take the white flag under green.

If a caution occurs before the leader reaches the white flag NASCAR will make another attempt at a Green White Checkered finish.

No word yet on how many additional attempts will be made. Currently only one attempt is made. I expect an official announcement shortly.

Do you see this as an improvement in racing?

Sounds like a great idea. They need to do this in every race.

If thishad been the clear rule a couple of years ago, Mark Martin would have a Daytona 500 under his belt. Back then the wreck should have stopped the race. Make a rule and make it the same each time.

  2. Did they clear this with ABC because we all know they don’t have a problem with preempting and going to Americas funnyest videos .

That would have changed the whole shoot out though. Casey Kane would have won .

  4. I think that is great. Could make the endings a lot more exciting and give the other drivers more of a chance.

Americas funniest videos, LOL, good comment, but this sounds like a good idea, better make a rule as well that Brian France cannot drink during a race, he needs to help out spotting the rule violators along with the rest of his cronies.

  6. Just for the heck of it, let’s try this. If a caution is needed, clear the track and go back to green rather than doing 40 caution laps allowing time for the leaders to pit and get out of the way and then the rest to pit and get back on the track and others time to go in and work on repairing the car, to out come back in work some more and so on. Wouldn’t that be interesting. The problem I have with late cautions is that someone can be running away from the field then they take away the advantage of the person that worked all race to get that size of lead. It being able to restart is so important to the race, maybe the qualification should be set from side by side restarts.

  8. I’ve always had a problem with the race endings. So predicable. Yellow with 5 laps to go. Continue counting laps while under caution; aka NOT RACING.
resume racing with 2 laps remaining and all bunched up. Guess what……race ending smashup.
What I would like to see is that with 10 laps or less if the caution comes out (no matter how many times) do not count laps under yellow.

I totally agree that the caution laps should not be counted with 10 or less to go. Let’s see a great finish instead.

Okay – sign me up for not counting caution laps period, ever. Another problem with all the caution laps is it changes the race due to fuel consuption. Maybe they should just park them.

I agree with parking under caution as well.

I agree. That’s only fair for the guys who have calculated their gas milage to make it to the end.

Take counting caution out all togehter I would suggest.

I think NASCAR is listening a little closer to fans this year.

  10. Being a racer from days gone by, I would love to NASCAR put in place a new rule that no caution lap count if there are less than 20 laps remaining in the race, period. Because if you are not in the top three positions with a green-white-checker finish, you can pretty much forget it since for some strange reason, NASCAR likes 5 lap cautions. What’s with that???? Now add in fuel strategy for those extra caution laps and you now have another new ball game.

  18. I don’t think the policy of counting the laps while under caution is right. They are not racing during that time. Either stop the race or begin counting when the race actually starts again.

  20. i think nascar needs to change the rule as far as starting n restarting the race…..when everyone sees the green flag everyone goes …the leader should NOT control the start…..all it creates is an action by one driver and reactions for the other 42 drivers…..just GO ON GREEN

  24. Stop implementing rules and start using the race time for RACING!. When they say it is a 500 mile race and they only race 400 miles and 100 miles under caution is NOT a full race. No caution should count if they (NASCAR) are boasting a 500 mile race.. Been to races that end short and half the race that was driven was under caution, not what I call money well spent or memories I wish to keep…
There is drama and excitement in other areas than just the end of a race. NASCAR needs to stop trying to balance the field out when after all, this is called racing. This means whoever has the faster car can win. The way it is set up now, even Buckshot Jones would have had a win under these rules that are set in place today.
I am old school, put the cars out there to race and race to win, if you are the ugly duckling trying to catch up, well, bring something better next week.

  26. I agree with the post that stated why count any caution laps! We pay and watch a race for racing ..not idling around in a circle and counting cautions. If it takes more than a few laps to clean the track because of a wreck…red flag the cars. A 500 mile race ought to be a RACE…not riding around in same positions!

  28. A 500 mile race should be just what it is called 500 Miles. We pay to see 500 miles So let them race 500 miles not 450 miles.

  30. If the race is supposed to be 500 miles, counting caution laps, then at the end of 500 miles, and not 501 miles, whoever is in the lead is the winner.
