Who Made The Biggest Mistake at Texas?

When Jimmie Johnson crashed early in the race you would have thought Dale Earnhardt Jr took the lead on the last lap at Talladega. The crowd went wild.dickies500_09_thumb

Sunday’s Dickie’s 500 at Texas Motor Speedway was a battle to see who could make the biggest mistake. Jimmie Johnson threw away a huge chunk of his championship lead. Kyle Busch threw away the race lead. Dale Earnhardt Jr threw away a good finish.

Kyle Busch out of gas.

Kyle Busch beat a fast path out of Texas Motor Speedway after being forced to the pits with an empty fuel cell while he was leading with just 3 laps to go. Why didn’t Kyle at least explain what happened?

Kyle’s new crew chief, Dave Rogers, blew it big time by not bringing Kyle to pit road for gas sooner.

Kurt Busch knew Kyle was going to run out of gas with 3 laps to go. So why didn’t Kyle’s new crew chief know it? Kurt was told by his crew chief Pat Tryson that he didn’t have to race Kyle – that Kyle was short on gas. I guess Kyle’s team should have been listening

Dale Earnhardt Jr’s crew chief didn’t do much better.

Dale Earnhardt Jr hit pit road out of gas with just 7 laps to go. The pit crew dumped in a few gallons of gas and let Junior go. He only made it a few yards out of his pit stall before his car stalled because it could not pick up fuel.

Lance McGrew should have never let Junior leave his pit until he had fuel pressure. Junior was completely out of gas when he hit pit road.

McGrew could learn a thing or two from his teammate on the No. 24 team. Last week when Jeff Gordon ran out of gas at Talladega crew chief Steve LeTarte held Gordon in the pits until the car had fuel pressure. Had McGrew done the same thing Earnhardt would have had a chance to finish in the top 10 – instead of 25th.

Jimmie Johnson in the wall.

Don’t engrave Jimmie Johnson’s name on the Sprint Cup just yet. Johnson lost 111 points after crashing on the 2nd lap. The No. 48 team still holds a  73 point lead in the Sprint Cup standings. But it is not an unbeatable lead.

So what did you think about the race?

I’m no Busch fan at all but Kyle should have been brought in also for gas.
Jr was doing so good ,what a shame to lose a top 5 win because of gas..what the heck are these crew chiefs thinking. They need to keep better check and when a driver asks if he should come in for gas,the crew chief needs to get them in.

I can’t understand the timing…Jr. came in several times earlier to retain his position on the track. Why did he run out of gas when he did? Had he come in for gas at a time when he knew he needed gas in order to finish and not gambled to the last minute, he may have won the race. Who made that last call? Lance or Junior???? A case of better late or never???? I just wonder…..

    [Reply]

    Colleen Reply:

This one is ALL on Lance, I have Nascar scanner and Jr asked to come in laps earlier, explained why he wanted to come in and Lance said NO we are going to wait and do a splash and go.. well u see where that got them, Lance did apologize at the end and said it was “his fault” and he was sorry, no comment back from Jr, I’m sure by that point he was boiling, I know I would of been. Another great run ruined. He and that team really needed a good finish. This is the second time in the last few weeks Lance hasn’t listened to Jr and ended up with a bad finish because of it. I’m not a Lance basher by any means and I don’t think Jr should be making all the calls, but Lance has got to start listening to his driver when his driver is that passionate about wanting to come in and he’s making complete sense as to why he wants to come in. Hope Lance has learned something from this and I hope Jr can keep his head up and get a good finish at Phoenix!

  20. Hey – 2-3 weeks ago Jr. INSISTED to his new crew chief that they come in for gas BEFORE the final laps and then had to argue about it so don’t blame him – It is the crew chiefs job to know how much gas a car has in it – also, where was the crew when he didn’t restart? They should have been right there getting him restarted. Jr. has made his share of mistakes, but c’mon don’t blame him for all of them. I love him and he IS running much better and will continue to do so, we just need to give them all a chance to get it all together. I will always be a Dale, Jr. fan.

Jr was too far down pit road for his crew to help him. Nascar changed that rule a few years back, the crews can only go so far down pit road(I think it’s 3 pit stalls but I’m not completely sure) to help the driver.

  24. Do these men need to be hit over the head!!!! This running out of gas every week during the last few laps, is getting really old. They have gages don’t they? They have ran enough races to know how far they can push it, without running out of gas. I trhink if they want to make it to the end, they need to come in when they have abt 20 laps left for fuel, then they should be able to finish the race . It sure seems like so many of them try to save it at the end, then it’s to late.If they come in to fuel, they don’t have a chance to make up time, or laps, the race is OVER!!!. We see it week after week, when are they gonna get it, they can’t wait til there down to the last laps to decide they need to come in for gas..DUHH!!! The blame is on both, they know you can’t run that kind of gamble, & be able to make it to the end..

As for Jr they knew that he was going to be six laps short on fuel. Since there is always a margin of error one way or the other his crew chief should have brought him in at least a couple of laps before he was due to run out of gas. That way he probably wouldn’t have had the problem in the pits. As for that problem they should have made sure the car was running properly before sending him out of his pit. I thought that was what the crew chief is there for.

As for Kyle Busch he knew he would be short on gas but he had been in a position where he could try to save gas. Is it up to him to know how much he has saved? I do’t care for Kyle Busch but it’s a bad way to lose a race.

It’s unfortunate he caused Jimmy to lose so much, but now it will really be interesting to see how it plays out the next 2 wks.Everybody said Jimmy, & Chad had to be cheating, so we will see, what happens. It won’t be boring that’s for sure.

With Kyle trying to make history, I don’t see why they wouls take such a risk, knowing it would cost him so much…What were they they thinking.?
To Khris, Jr is along way from being washed up, just needs to get it together. For Bonnie, there isn’t any driver that likes to loose, & they can’t always change it!!!

All the cars that were subject to run out of fuel on the last laps should have come in and gotten fuel when there were approxiamate 20 – 25 laps left in the race. I’m sure the fault goes to both the Crew Chief and the Driver who should have insisted on getting fuel to be able to finish the race and not have to save to finish or guess about running out of fuel. I do beleive that Lance should have held Jr in the pits until his car was running OK with fuel pressure. Good Race All Day But Bad Finish Due To Fuel Mishap But Still Will Cheer Him On “Go Jr”.

P.S. Superman is subject ot mistakes also and Baby Kyle back to his old self today “Powdy Kyle”.

As for Kyle not getting the win he deserved and making history, I blame his NEW crew chief for allowing him to run out of gas. Can’t Rogers calculate? I think Addington would have brought him in to top off that gas tank. So it is Joe Gibbs that I am putting the blame on most since he is the one to remove Addington and put Rogers there. At least Addington has proven he can calculate that gas mileage. Sorry that you did not get that 3rd win this week-end, Kyle; but there will be other week-ends to make that history – providing you race all three once in awhile. And to you Kyle haters – he did not pout – he wasn’t in the top 5 and therefore not expected to be there for an interview. How would you know he was pouting anyway – they did not interview him this time. I would say he was disappointed and probably glad that Kurt won since he could not. Joe Gibbs needs to get rid of Rogers – send him back to Nationwide. He just does not know the Cup car capabilities nor gas mileage as he knows the Nationwide cars.

Dale has said that he needs a dictator, so if Lance was being a dictator about when to come in for gas, then the fault lies with Lance, not Dale. At least Kyle didn’t win. That was pure dumb on Lance part. The good thing is Jr. run great all day, he stayed in the top ten, I think the lowest he got was 9th, maybe this is a start for 2010, we hope so. Somebody needs to straighten out Sam Hornish, Jr., he’s driving over his head, and he does this every race, wrecks somebody. I wouldn’t furnish cars for him, to me he’s no good. 88. TOLD YOU ALL HE WOULD WRECK. ONE MORE BORRING RACE AS I SAID IT WOULD BE. ALSO ANY RACE THAT ENDS WITH FUEL BEING THE OUT COME IS GOING TO BE LEFT LEFT TURN. IF ANYONE SHOULD BE MAD IT SHOULD BE KYLE, ALL THOSE LAPS LED ,THE FASTED CAR ALSO.ANY ONE IS LIKELY TO STALL OUT LIKE JR.DID. ALL THOSE GUYS THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE A YELLOW COME OUT. ONLY TWO MORE TO SET THREW THIS YEAR. JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I KNEW THAT FOLLOWED NASCAR HAS FOUND OTHER THINGS TO WATCH. MOST ALL OF THEM SAY ITS TO LONG AND BORRING. GUESS I AGREE WITH THEM. SOME SAY THEY WATCHED THE LAST 10 LAPS. GUESS THOSE EMPTY SEATS TELLS IT ALL. I STILL SAY GET RID OF THOSE BORRING FAST TRACKS AND RACE NOT JUST RIDE ARROUND A CIRCLE AND LAY LOW FOR 3 HOURS. ARE WE DUMB OR WHAT? GLAD I’M OUT JUST TIME AND A LITTLE ELECTRC. THIS WEEK I WAS CAMPIHG OUT AND I DID WATCH ALL THREE BORRING RACES. EVEN THE TRUCK RACE WAS THAT WAY. WASN’T FOR THE MIKE JOCKEY I WOULD SLEEP A LOT MORE.

Harry , if you don’t like the races, don’t watch them. The rest of us don’t care what you feel or think.

  90. Marcel I agree with you on JR. This bad run started when he left DEI, he wanted to be in charge. He is frustrated, but he needs to find a crew chief thats got experince in cup, and an listen and respect what he says!Thats why I suggested Chad.

  92. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO GO KYLE LIL TIT CRYBABY BUSCH…………..YOU MADE MY DAY, EVENING, AND ENTIRE WEEK, FOR THAT MATTER!!!! I was so entirely happy to see you stranded on that race track out of gas!!!! LOL!!!! WTG Jimmy Johnson also. Wonder what NASCAR has in mind for their “Golden Boy” to make up his points??? How will they “fix” the remaining races so he can capture his 4th title???? GOOOOOOOOOOOO Mark Martin. You of the entire group of drivers deserves to win the title. You can do it “old man”. I am praying for you night and day that you will win. As for you Jr., you will be next year. I still have faith in you. You also know you can do it. If you just had a car like Jimmy Johnson’s I know you would have it all!!

  96. If racing is that boring to you why wake up and watch the last 10 laps of it or any of it for that matters? Just stay asleep and buy a newspaper the next day or watch the news. then you will not have to worry about who wins.
