Ban NASCAR Motorhomes for Better Racing
Get rid of the driver’s motorhome lot and you’ll instantly see a pickup in the on track competition level in NASCAR.
Drivers have become a little too friendly with each other – and that has led to too much give and take on the race track. When drivers become too friendly with each other they are less likely to race each other hard when it counts.
Drivers don’t need to be pals, buddies and friends. They need to be rivals, foes and enemies to the bitter end.
When drivers spend the weekend camping out in the infield they end up visiting with other drivers in the motorhome lot. They grill steaks, tell stories, play video games and gather up for poker.
NASCAR drivers have become just a little too friendly with each other.
When Jimmie Johnson goes over to Jeff Gordon’s motorhome for dinner the day before a big race it makes it that much harder for Jeff to give Jimmie the bump and run on race day.
When Kyle Busch shows up at Dale Earnhardt Jr’s motorhome for online racing that makes Junior think twice before moving Kyle out of the racing groove.
There was a lot more racing and a lot less giving up positions before drivers started bringing their motorhomes to the racetrack.
NASCAR, ban the motorhomes and let’s have at it boys.

I agree with the concept of toooo friendly, the drivers need to remember that it is every man for himself on raceday.
[Reply]
I see no problem if the drivers are friends. As long as they can remember that on race day it’s everyone for himself.
[Reply]
I SAY BAN BRIAN FRANCE AND HIS DUMB BO SIDE KICK MIKE HELTON!!
[Reply]
I totaly dis agree I think it’s great the drivers can be friends
That is like u going to work and
Not being friends with your
Co workers, that’s there job
Leave them alone and let them
Have fun lifes too short and Jesus is coming soon!
[Reply]
You don’t believe that these competitors are capable of cut throat racing? Dale Earnhardt could loan a driver the use of his jet one week, bump him out of the way on Sunday and he continued those friendships until the day he died.
[Reply]
talk of saving money? these drivers are out to win races. there is nothing wrong with the drivers being friends. if you dont like the way things are, watch the wwf, now theres a real sport. get a life.
[Reply]
That is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard thies are pro drivers they are driving and working to win and do thier best. I would like to see any of people find a driver that is not trying
[Reply]
Do you really think Kyle Bush would give Dale, Jr. a break just because they played video games the night before???…..These racers have enough to think about without worrying about who they should be friends with….if they stayed in a hotel at the track, would it be possible to avoid seeing each other???…they get enough flack about whether they are winning or losing, now someone is going to pick their friends???…..Bad idea!!!!!
[Reply]
YOUR ARTICLE IS BULL CRAP
[Reply]
This article sounds accurate, try it first to see if there is any difference in racing.
[Reply]
Dumb idea. The drivers should be friends on and off the track. What kind of message would this send to our young, who someday might want to race. I feel as if someone is trying to put bad idea in the Nascar Gods heads. Leave it alone, everthing will be fine. Most drivers don’t have many friends on the track, but will go to dinner with them after the race. Leave well enough alone!!! Drivers are Special People who do their things the best way they can. Set to many restrictions on them and their performance will be impeaded. I wonder if the person who wrote this article has ever met a driver!!! If he has, he must have not gotten a good impression of him.
[Reply]
It’s not their “friendliness” that cools them off, it’s the rules and potential penalties of NASCAR!! They ALL want to win! I haven’t seen any of them be TOO nice until they are put on probation. It’s not the motorhomes, it’s all the rules, penalties, and probations. NASCAR says go for it boys and then pulls them intothe hauler when they do.
[Reply]
I hope this article was written tongue-in-cheek, otherwise it is a total waste of web space. These drivers are athletes – they are not at war. They know the difference between friendship and a paycheck.
Rather than giving friends a break on the track, most try to race each other how they are raced and respected on track.
[Reply]
WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!! What does any of this have to do with racing?? How deep are you going to dig to find something to bitch about?? This counrty is made up of FREEDOM people. Are you forgetting that or just giving it up? Even racers have the freedom to socialize with whomever they choose. Is somebody jealous because they have earned their money and have the Freedom to choose how they spend it? Their motorhomes are all they have when they are away from ‘home’. Leave it alone and find something else to chew up and spit out!
[Reply]
who wrote this dumb article? He/She should go to the National Enquirer and work there! This story is way out of line for this sport.
[Reply]
thats silly…i drove for several years..and had several good friendships with my competitors off track and rivalries ontrack…still have good friendships today with some….
[Reply]
I agree with BIG Al…this is a bunch of crap!!!!!!!!!!
[Reply]
Totally Stupid!!!I cannot believe that you idiots can come up with something this dumb to post.
[Reply]
These motorhomes have been there for years, even Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace had one and all the other drivers. I really believe that they are friends when they live close to one another, but on the track, it’s every man for himself.
[Reply]
Nascar has stopped almost all the really hard and agressive driving. They have said play nice or you loose points and a lot of money. When they do bump, rub or what ever the drivers did years ago these drivers are told no-no-no that is not playing nice. Then again they were told this season have at it boys. But play nice.. Keep your mouths shut also.Say nothing that could show you are upset and letting off steam. So don’t intervew them right after the race. That would not make the media happy nor nascar or the sponsors, so just smile and be only positive and look pretty. Let them be the men they are, they have come a long way, that is the way you want them to be WOW Nascar you can’t have it both ways. So why can’t the drivers be friends, they are the professionals at this level and they want to win they know what they have to do or they loose their sponsors and their rides. This is not the racing we had prior to Dale Sr. death. Friendships can be for life and we all need them. Let these men and their families relax together. It also is cheaper for drivers to stay in their motorhomes and not in hotels some distance away from the track. They are also out of harms way before and after the race. !!!!!!!!
[Reply]
You’ve got a point. I don’t know how much it would do tho, you know Jr. got his dog “Killer” from Greg Biffle, and I’m sure they are somewhat friends. I think they should forget about the friendships and go out on Saturday and Sunday and bump and go at it. It’s like someone said friends thru the week, enemies on the weekend!!!!!
[Reply]
Somebody is just trying to get things stirred up. I guess it’s a slow news week for NASCAR. Why shouldn’t the drivers be friends? Isn’t that kind of how NASCAR started to begin with? A group of friends that got together to race… NHRA drivers are friends and even when they have their spats or get beat, they still pitch right in to help another driver if they need parts or anything. I’ve been proud to tell my “ball sport” friends that auto racing is a good family sport. There may be a spat here or there, fines for using a cuss word, an occasional DUI or speeding ticket, or a rare bad drug test. NASCAR has had it’s share of moonshiners, but historically, racecar drivers are not getting shot or getting arrested for rape or any other nasty behavior like the ball players do. And, no race driver has ever used as much foul language on camera as most ball coaches. Auto racing is an amazing sport, so RacingWin writer, get over yourself.
[Reply]
THIS IS PLAIN BULL —-…WHAT MORON CAME UP WITH THIS CRAP? THESE GUYS ARE PROFESSIONALS… YES THEY CAN BE FRIENDS, BUDDIES AND STILL RACE EACH OTHER . STOP WITH THE DUMB SHIT AND WRITE SOME INTELLIGENT ARTICLES.!!
[Reply]
WHAT????????? Drivers have been friends with each other for years and it has nothing to do with motorhomes. Nor do their having motorhomes at the tracks have anything to do with how they drive in a race. A motorhome is a great convenience for a driver; comfortable accommodations and everything he needs right at the track. A driver can bring his family to the track and they have a comfortable place to relax and be near their loved one. Some tracks don’t have accommodations nearby and they might have to commute a great distance between a hotel and the track. Also, they visit one another’s homes; should they quit doing that too? They give other drivers rides to and from races in their private planes. I really don’t see the point in this article. Lawyers are good friends outside a courtroom but enemies inside a courtroom. Race drivers can be good friends off the track but enemies on the track.
[Reply]
First, you can’t ask the drivers (no matter who they are) to give up their personel life. Motorhomes are a form of transportaion for their way of life and if they wish to invite their neighbors in for a round of video games, a fresh cup of coffee or even a refreshment, that’s a personal choice. When they leave that motorhome and go to there garages, they are going to their jobs just as you or I would. As a driver, your job is to drive fast enough to win a race for your employer regardless to who you had as a vistor just hours before!
Point is that your personal life and your “job” are entirely two seperate entities.
[Reply]
WHAT????? Drivers were good friends long before motorhomes were at tracks. Motorhomes are a great convenience for the drivers. They have comfortable accommodations without having to stay in hotels. Their families can accompany them to races more easily than having to stay in hotels. Lawyers are good friends outside a courtroom but they are still enemies in the courtroom; the same applies to race drivers; they are friends off the track; they are foes on the track. Using Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson as examples, which you did in the article, their being teammates has as much (maybe more) to do with how they race one another than whether they had dinner together the night before.
[Reply]
Good Lord, have mercy….Who in the world has thought this up? Evidently someone who has time on their hands. Of course the campers should be where they are if for no other reason than for the race drivers families. Has anyone thought of them? I hate to think what I would have done when my husband worked on one of the teams back in the seventies if we had not been able to bring our Winnibago, which provided sleeping quarters, food, bathroom etc. and made it something to look forward to each week. And even back then, yes the drivers were friendly to each other off the track, but still competitive on the track.
[Reply]
I cant believe someone comes up with this.I have raced in the past, when you race you race nomather who your friend is, You don’t race him to hurt him.
[Reply]
Who comes up with these horse crap questions. What a joke.
[Reply]
Out of all the stuff that I have gotten from you, this is the most asinine articles I had read!! What are these drivers supposed to do, be robots? I doubt that the drivers are hanging out in the infield talking about their race setups with one another while eating their hot dogs!! They have to be at the track practically 3 days and the track is the only place where they can relax and not get bugged by fans after the track closes for the day. What makes you think that they stay there and the teams go to hotels? To get peace…and if they hang out together and have some fun, then why not?
I usually do not comment on here, but I had to. Get a grip!!!
[Reply]
I totally agree with most of the above comments. This was a really dumb article that was way off the mark. If you meant to be outrageous, you certainly succeeded!!!
[Reply]
When I started to read the story I thought you were going to say giving the space to the fans would increase attendance. But alas the story was the drivers are too friendly. I like the idea, now that you have started it, of the fans having the space so they can mingle with the action like in the old Indy 500 days and early NASCAR. But then someone would have to figure out what to do with the drivers, crews and families. Maybe they could do like Minor League Baseball and stay with local families. Now there is a logistics challenge. What a hoot that would be to attempt. Jeff & his family can stay with me and the rest of his crew can live with other families on our hill. Opps, my wife just opted for Tony. Sorry Jeff.
[Reply]
THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I’VE EVER HEARD OF, OR THOUGHT ANYONE COULD POSSIBLY SAY. The thing is that the DRIVERS NEED TO START A NEW ORGANIZATION. The France family to the promoters need to give
back to their fans. THE ECONOMY JUST WON’T LET THE FOLKS DO AS THEY DID WHEN PETTY, EARNHARDT, ETC RACED, SO THEY NEED TO LOWER THE SEATS AND FOOD AT THE TRACK, ETC, TO GET FANS BACK INTO THE SEATS, THIS ALSO INCLUDES HOTELS, RIGHT DOWN TO PARKING.
AND QUIT FINING JR FOR EVERYTHING THE KID SAYS OR DOES. grammy 67
[Reply]
That is about nut’s who ever came up with that one… The family of the drivers enjoy being with their husband’s and also the wives can also visit with each other. We have a new generation coming along with babies being born now every other month or so. Remember this is a family sport, and memories are made from famlies doing things together and kid’s meeting their favorite driver. Race car drivers have one thing on their mind when race day comes, that is to win, team mate or whom ever they get up on the wheel and race for the win. Every man for himself. Leave the motor homes for the drivers and their famly’s a lone.
[Reply]
Well RacingWin you sure started a controversy. Good for you. After I thought about the motorhome thing, I started laughing. I was trying to picture the drivers of today sleeping in sleeping bags on the ground or in the back of a truck like they did in the old days. Things have really progressed in all professional sports.
In the late 70′s a rookie bb player earned 15k now days minimum is 400k. That is around the cost of some of those motorhomes. I just renewed my season tickets for my local track, I should have ask him how much it cost to go to a race in the 70′s. Frankly I enjoed the story and all the comments, it is interesting to read the different reactions.

The average 2nd year driver arrives at the track in a $15MM private jet. He walks down the aircraft boarding stairs and sits down in a $12,000 golf cart custom made for him. He is driven over to the drivers area and enters a $1MM motor home, also custom built for him/her. His income is already off the charts and will double each of the next 3 years. Who pays for all this?
Most people think it’s the sponsers. Where does the sponser get the money to pay for these trinkets? Bingo! From their customers. That would be us fans, the same ones who used to pay up to $200 for a seat 12 inches wide to watch these spoiled brats “race” around the track.
Hell yes throw out the drivers motorhomes.
[Reply]
This is the stupidess thing I have ever heard. You hear Reed, David and those boys talking about racing together when they were very young, I do not think they had motor homes. But on the track it is each man for himself. Sorry or herself Danica. Tony drove for Harvick some. did it stop Tony from sayinging here kitty kitty? No! Was Harvick mad, yes. But because they were friends, they did not try to kill one another but raced hard. Why should 10 airplanes fly from one track to another and use alll that fuel when they can sometimes fly together. Be real, if you and yoour neighbor work in the same factory, should you not be friends because you both try for the same job. I am 67 years old and have attended races since I was 2 or 3 years old. My dad built racecars. All the guys I grew up around I was glad to call my friends. Get a life, if you want to complain, complain about NASCAR saying go after it boys and then not letting them or having “secret” meetings to “raise hell with them” and take money from them an all the while not wanting you to know. Those guys need their friends. They cannot walk the street as you and I do without getting swamped. What do you want them to do? Use your head.
[Reply]
What a joke LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
[Reply]
OMG, Are you kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[Reply]
I normally agree with you.But now I wonder what you were smoking when you wrote this article. If you got rid of the motor homes, where do you think the drivers would stay? A local hotel.AQnd they would be a lot closer to EVERY OTHER driver. Put down the crack pipe, and try again.
[Reply]
So the drivers have to hate each other for better competition? That’s not true, being a race car driver you’re naturally competitive so you could try racing you’re brother, dad, son, uncle, nephew or anybody else and they still race to win. If they all hated each other then all of the cars would be tore all to hell at the end of every race. Plus what’s the difference if they all have motorhomes at the track or they all stay in hotel rooms? The hotels are already taken up by fans and the crew members. The competitiveness is great right now so i don’t see a problem, the drivers and cars are just more even than they used to be.
