Speak Up on Atlanta and NASCAR

Here’s your chance to have your say on the Pep Boys Auto 500 in Atlanta.

Does Jimmie Johnson have the championship locked up?

Was the contact between Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson on the next to last restart just hard racing, did Hamlin spin his tires, or did Edwards shove him out of the way?

Can Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth or Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ever win another race?

And what about the save Denny Hamlin made at the end of the race? One more slip and he would have taken Jimmie Johnson out.

After Jimmie Johnson’s amazing run to 2nd place after running as far back as 30th Sunday afternoon in Atlanta I think you can go ahead and hand him the 2008 Sprint Cup today.

Even Carl Edwards seemed to be in a state of shock when he was told where Johnson had finished.

When ABC Victory Lane correspondent Dave Burns asked Edwards if he saw who finished 2nd Edwards said driver said he did not.

“The 48,” said Burns.

“Are you kidding me? You’ve rained on my parade all day,” said a dejected Edwards. “I could have done without that one.”

Johnson now has a 183 point lead over 2nd place Edwards.

Jimmie Johnson could skip next week’s Texas race and still keep the points lead with a win there by anyone but Edwards.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Gordon still can’t run any better than good — but good is no longer good enough. Earnhardt finished 10th, and Gordon finished 6th. Combined the two drivers have a total of one win in 2008.

Denny Hamlin posted a 3rd place finish after leading late in the race. He was a victim of Carl Edwards’ bumper on a late race restart. “It knocked us down the racetrack.  He chose what lane he wanted to be in when he hit us.  Once you get the guy on the outside on the restart, it’s over,” said Hamlin

One thing is for sure. The Chase has created a closer race for the Championship. Jimmie Johnson can clinch it next week at Texas. It’s unlikely, but it is possible. It’s more likely he will clinch it the following week at Phoenix. “Man, sure would make the week of Homestead a lot easier for me,” said Johnson.

So what are you thinking about all this with just 3 races to go in the 2008 NASCAR season.

  2. I just want to know how Tony Stewart ended up ahead of Dale Jr. in points given that Tony was a lap down and if it was Jr., he would have been down more instead, even after Tony got his lap back, which also brings me to say, that the person first lap down was not Tony Stewert but another driver, who should have gotten the lap back. I’ve been watching whenever Dale Jr. gets lapped, he could be first one to get the lap back, but then there would be other drivers ahead of him in line to get a lap back, so they do,Not the case today with Stewert. It seems unfair how this works and if the points and the whole laps thing were explaind step-by-step so I could understand it, maybe I could have better understanding of the whole points and chase points altogether. What I find under Nascar doesn’t really explain it very well for me. I’m sorry, I’m one of these people who needs it explained very simple. I’ve always been that way. Please answer me fast, I’m trying to understand it so when my dad asks me I can sound like I know what I’m talking about.

Thank you for your paitence with me.

  4. IM NOT A GORDON FAN BY NO MEANS BUT HE SHOULD WIN HOMESTEAD. DONT THINK EDWARDS SHOVED HIM HIS CAR WAS WAY TO GO BUT HIS REAR VIEW MIRROR NEEDS AJUSTED. CONGRADS TO JIMMIE BOY ON HIS NEXT CHAMPIONSHIP. HAND HIM THE TROPHY. MAYBE NEXT YR JR. EARNHARDT ALL THE WAY FROM DALLADEGA ALABAMA. THE HOUSE THE EARNHARDTS BUILT

  6. I am so disappointed in Hendricks I thought sure they would give dale jr.a good car.

  7. Rita on
  8. I really thought Junior would have had a better year. I figured at least three wins but was not betting on the championship. What is wrong? He is a good driver but never seems happy with the car. Mr H needs to step in and figure out what to do. 2009 cannot be another 2008.

  10. i know corn cob carl put the bumber to denny on purpos. if ihad been david last night i would have put corn cob carl in the wall. i know he would have put the bumber to him.

Dale drives as hard as he can but his cars are not as good as Jimmie Johnsons and Gordons arent either. I can’t understand if they all share info why is Jimmies car better than all the other Hendrick cars ??? Dale is the best and he will show all the doubters next season.. Go 88 Jr Nation is behind you no matter what…..

  12. I think jr. made a mistake going to hendrick.
He should of gone to RCR.
Also Tony jr. needs to go

  13. Ron Enders on
  14. I’m tried of seeing Edwards doing his little girl back flip. Hello this is Nascar do a burn out or a polish victory lap. Nascar should ban Edwards from doing his little girl back flip and if he does it again ban him from Nascar for life, this sport is for men not little girls doing back flips!!!!!

  15. Mike on
  16. He needs to fire his cousin and get a real crew chief.That has been his problem all along.Just needs someone that will tell him what needs to be done not just what Jr wants to hear.Give him a couple of more years with Hendrick he wll get there.Have A Blessed Evening.Mike }> JOHN 3:16 <{

  18. A comment regarding the piece from LSMYTHERS.
i think at the beginning of the year it was decided that Johnson would be a three-peat. You heard this all year long. Why isn’t the No 48 ever chosen for the random inspection? To all of us JR fans, our day will come. I agree with Jim, I did not think Jr. should have gone to Hendrick and I believe that given the Dale, Sr. connection, Richard Childress would have done all he could to give JR good cars. Iam waiting for Mears to go to RCR next year and perhaps he will get in the chase because I think he is a good driver. Also. don’t think Johnson will have a chance at the title next year> Hendrick will see to it that Martin will win a championship before he finally retires as he said he was going to do when
Rusty Wallace left. After all, he did get his rocking charir too.

  19. OBie on
  20. Jr doesn’t need to “fire” his cousin. Hendricks needs to do some swapping of crew chiefs. The family connection is too strong and is not professional. Eurey and Jr fight like little kids. Eurey is a good crew chief but I think they need to do some changing. Look at the difference between the 48 team and the 88 team dynamics.

  21. B-Bro on
  22. The reason none of the other drivers (little girls) don’t do backflips is because they can’t go Edwards ….you sound like the typical Stewart fan that always cries but it’s getting to where those Jr. fans cry alot also. Jr. could have gotten sponsorship from anywhere and he should of moved his Nationwide team to NASCAR and fielded his own cars not join HMS. He was looking at the $ signs and the glory Gordo has got in the past. Jr. grow you a set and field your own NASCAR team….

  23. SCOTT on
  24. RICK GIVES THE TEAM GREAT CARS ITS UP TO THE CREW CHIEF HOW GOOD THAY RUN AND THE WHOLE TEAM NOT JEST MR. HENDRICK

  25. SCOTT on
  26. DO YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO START A TEAM? THEN DON’T BAD MOUTH JR. BECAUSE HE WENT TO HENDRICK HIS DAD DROVE FOR SOME ONE ELSE WHEN HE WAS BILDING HIS OWN TEAM DEI OR DID YOU FOR GET THAT!!!

  27. marcel on
  28.   I agree with __Obie, switching crew chiefs for JR.in the Hendrick stable could help.Reply to Ron ENDERS, what is wrong with a backflip, that is his way of showing his appreciations to his fans and the spectators, no different then cry baby Tony climbing the fence.Good thing he is leaving the team, Hamlin is beginning to cry just like him

  29. barbara on
  30. Well, hello, I believe JIMMIE JOHNSON IS THE BEST CONDIDATE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP, he has a great personality, speaks his mind in a diplomatic way and HAS A GREAT CREW CHEIF—-KNAUS, after all the ups and downs, Knaus has had to PUT WITH. I still think that NASCAR is FAVORING TOYOTA, BUT NOT IN POOR MIKEY’S BEHALF. If they looked from top to bottom, NASCAR WOULD PROBABLY FINE GIBBS RACING A LOT MORE…….. As for CARL EDWARDS WHAT A CRY BABY HE HAS BECOME……..out of all the men on the race track, next to JR, IT’S GOT TO BE SIMPLY JIMMIE JOHNSON. I can’t say JEFF GORDON, BECAUSE I took my grandson to see him when he was in Rich, Va and HE COULDN’T EVEN WAVE TO HIM OR ANY OTHER CHILD THAT WAS THERE. I do like Jeff as a driver, but WE BUY THEIR GOODS……
I, also, think THAT HENDRICKS needs to move JRS
cousin, because they fuss too much, and JR ENDS UP MAKING THE PIT DECISIONS, ETC, he doesn’t need HIM……. TOO BAD KNAUS WORKS FOR JIMMIE. The fella in the wheel chair, I can’t remember his name, right now, but HE ALSO WOULD BE GOOD FOR JR…..He’s kinda in the
    same space as KNAUS. GRAMMY66
oh, by the way, NASCAR needs to GIVE US, THE FANS SOME REDUCTION IN TICKET PRICES, AND EXPECT US TO PAY FOR 3 OR 4 RACES, JUST TO SEE THE CUP RACE——WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE WINSTON………WHAT A DECADE…………

  31. barbara on
  32. Sorry, I MEANT TO SAY AND NOT EXPECT US TO PAY FOR 3 OR 4 RACES, WE DON’T WANT TO SEE. grammy 66

  33. Mike on
  34. I totaly agree I would just like to see Jeff get his 5th one.Jimmy and Knaus will own 15 or 20 car Dealerships just Like Gordon if he wins his 3rd and I know that he will..Go!!! HMS !!!that means Jr to.Have A Blessed Day Mike }> JOHN 3:16 <{

I think the announcers should acknowledge the
other 39 drivers on the track. After all there
teams that are never mentioned unless they wreck. All you hear is Johnson, Edwards, Gordon, and Earnhardt. How do the announcers
think the other drivers feel when they watch the replay. Not good, I’m sure. Hamlin should
won that race in Atlanta, Edwards did push him.
One day he’s going to get his and it probably
won’t be pretty, he’s about due. Nascar is just
    the same anymore.

  35. SCOTT GIBB on
  36. I THINK JR. WILL DO GREAT NEXT YEAR

  37. Dan on
  38. I say give the trophy to Jimmy, this years championship was over weeks ago. Why have a chase if nobody can catch the leader? The chase is a joke ment to get fans excited so we’ll watch the last ten races of the season instead of football. Why is it harder to gain points than loss points? Or how did Jimmy gain points when he didn’t lead the most laps, didn’t win the race and came in second to the second place chaser? I just don’t understand the point system when you win the race and lose points.

  39. marcel on
  40. All said and done, if it wasn’t for Carl, Who could catch Jimmy. Give Carl some credit, he is a great and exciting driver. He deserves to win the championship

i say lets go to daytona speedweeks early

  41. jim on
  42. Put Jimmy and Dale in equil cars and Dale will race the pants off Jimmy.
    He’s mister LUCKY!!!!!

DENNY HAMLIN COULD HAVE IN ATLANTA IF IT HADN’T
BEEN FOR CONCRETE CARL. HAMLIN IS NOT A DRIVER
ANYONE CAN COUNT OUT ON ANY RACE. HE WILL BE
MAKING JOHNSON AND EDWARDS EAT HIS DUST IN THE
NEXT YEAR OR SO. REMEMBER HE HASN’T BEEN DRIVING SPRINT CARS THAT LONG. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR THE FIRST YEAR, THAT’S PRETTY GOOD. LOOK OUT, HE’S COMING ON.

  47. Mick on
  48. I’m always suspicious when a car runs that well. Hard to imagine a car being that superior, and ‘legal’. I’m not knocking anybody here, Jimmie can drive and he gets great cars, but to me, this is beyond consistant.

  49. marcel on
  50. Hey racing fans ,lets move on to Texas this weekend. I am putting my money on Carl to lead the most laps and lead the on that counts

Mick, you are absolutely right, it becoming very
suspicious the way Johnson’s cars are always too good. The same thing is going on with Edwards cars. Blows the mind why they very seldom have problems with their cars. Someone needs to do some serious investigating. Get on the stick NASCAR.

  51. Larry on
  52. Qualifying rules need to be changed!! What about qualifying set for Friday. If it rains, qualify on Saturday morning (Nationwide does!). If it rains on Saturday, qualify on Sunday morning. If Sunday morning is rainy, set by points. Something has to be changed in the qualifying rules. 10 rainouts in 33 races is way too many to have the points leader starting in the front.

  53. Mike on
  54. I think what they need to do if qualifying is rained out is invert the 12 cars in the chase or just put all 12 of the car numbers in a hat and draw the starting line up maybe having someone that is not in the chase do the drawing.Again this is just for rain out of qualifying.It semes that rain out is becoming a regular thing.I know we dont have any control over what GOD does.Thanks Have A Blessed Day Mike }> JOHN 3:16 <{

  55. Janet W on
  56. I think Jimmie is cheating, the other drivers that got fresh tires did not come up that fast so there is something wrong somewhere. I agree with the person that said they had already picked Jimmie to be the three time champion. They also need to get some new announcers. Nascar is no fun anymore.

  57. Maureen on
  58. NASCAR mistake is catering to Tony Stewart who lost four big fans recently in our little group. Dale Jr. dropped to #10?!! Stewart was way behind Jr. in Atlanta and you push Stewart ahead of Jr.?!!! Demons are now running NASCAR! Jimmie Johnson is now my favorite and I voted every single day for Jr. in the NMPD but now it will be JJ starting next year. God bless JJ #48……he is MR. NASCAR! JJ #48 is a thrill to watch and the talk of all the office today even those not into NASCAR want to know when he races again. We call it JJ Racing.
NASCAR is going…down..down.down. The devil is now ruling our days of old great NASCAR.

  59. Maureen on
  60. NASCAR is getting to be a waste of airtime because of their “fixed” races. YOU COULD NOT STOP #48 IN ATLANTA. Everyone will be watching only #48 this Sunday in Texas and I hope NASCAR behaves themselves and lets this one race be an honest one! By the way, Tony Stewart is fat, with a disgusting bearded face—just plain icky. STOP being so jealous of numbers 48 & 88. Dale Jr and Jimmie Johnson can sell more tickets to NASCAR than all the others combined.

  61. SCOTT GIBB on
  62. Janet HOW IS JIMMIE CHEATING?

i always thought Kyle Busch needed an attitude adjustment, now I’m beginning to think that Carl Edwards also should get in line for his adjustment too. Lately he is so intent on taking out the whole field and getting up front, that everyone should just get out of his way. I don’t know about anyone else but that last pit stop he just brushed Junor out of the way without looking to this right to see if there was enough room. I’m surprised he didn’t get into a fight and finished the race. I’m sure if he hadn’t won this one it would have been someone’s fault and not his.

  63. Janet W on
  64. I JUST THINK THEY CHOSE HIM TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR THEM TO TALK ABOUT. THAT IS ALL THEY HAVE TALKED ABOUT SO YOU KNEW IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. I THINK THEY ALL CHEAT BUT THEY DONT CHECK JIMMIES CAR BECAUSE THEY WANT HIM TO WIN. I AGREE WITH MAUREEN ABOUT NASCAR BEING A WASTE OF AIR TIME. THEY CHOSE WHO THEY WANT TO WIN AND THAT IS WHO WINS.

  65. SCOTT GIBB on
  66. So if you don’t like it don’t watch it

Tell me what you're thinking...
