Announcing Return of No. 3 in Daytona 500

by

It’s official. Austin Dillon will drive the No. 3 Chevrolet in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

This will mark the first time since 2001 that the No. 3 will be on the track in Sprint Cup competition. Dale Earnhardt last drove it in the 2001 Daytona 500 – his final race.

It was a hard decision for Richard Childress to make. And it has been a long time coming. But Childress says it is the right thing to do. He says fans have been asking when the No. 3 was coming back, and that now is the time.

But many feel that the No. 3 should be retired in honor of Dale Earnhardt. Never to be raced again.

For the record Dale Earnhardt Jr says he has no issue with the No. 3 returning. But he says he understands the importance of the number to Earnhardt fans.

No matter which side you come down on, there will be a little extra spark in the air when the flag waves for the 2014 Daytona 500 as the No. 3 comes down off of turn four to take the green.

How about you, which side are you on? Are you happy to see the No. 3 return, or would you like to see it retired?

  2. Great move!!!!! Why not?

  4. I think it should be retired period out of respect to the “.Intimidator”. I will NOT watch nor ever cheer on anyone using #3. I hope and pray he looses every race. I do not appreciate anyone else driving or using that number.

  5. TOM BALLARD on
  6. I THINK ITS WRONG WHEN YOU RETIRE SOMETHING LEAVE IT RETIRED NO MATTER WHAT WILL NOT ROOT FOR HIM EITHER AND HAVE LOST RESPECT FOR CHILLDRESS BOOOOOOOOOOOO

  7. Darrell Blake on
  8. I think the only way the number 3 should be back on the track is if a Earnhardt is driving but there will never be another Intimidator

  9. Vicki on
  10. I think the number 3 should be retired. Nobody should be in that car.

  11. Kathryne W. Winslow on
  12. It means a lot to me to have the #3 back on the track, and especially to have Austin Dillon driving it. My nephew, Paul Ward, works in the engine shop and I am sure he is proud to put the car back on the track. We loved Dale but cannot bring him back so the next best thing is to honor him by putting the car back in racing. It should make Richard proud to have a family member drive it.

  13. Patty smith on
  14. I think it should be retired. Shame on Richard Childress.

  15. Danny Jones on
  16. The 3 should be retired at of respect for Dale, but not only that, he gave his life to running the 3 car. It is not right to ever use this number in a Sprint cup race ever again. Dale, don’t roll over just yet !

  17. Terry on
  18. I think it is great bringing the 3 back. Austin will do it right . 74 other drivers have driven that number. All you nay sayers sick your heads where the sun dont shine. It is going to be a great 2014 & beyond.

I never gave a crap for dale period he was a crook and got by with wat ever he wanted the number 3 should never be on the track and RCR can crawl up his grandsons butt with it if he wants to

  19. Joe on
  20. BECAUSE THE #3 SHOULD BE RETIRED !!!!!!

  21. Joe on
  22. THAT JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH RESPECT YOU HAVE FOR DALE SR. !!!

  23. BILL TROXELL on
  24. It should be retired s Dales number3

  25. Joe on
  26. I agree 100% I never wish to see any driver get hurt but I hope this whinny ass punk never even finishes a race.

  27. Jay Cross on
  28. I do not like the idea that that three is back on the track and I think Austin doing hopefully never never never wins a race.that you cry babyhas thenumber to the number 3

  29. Gayle Larson on
  30. No matter what he says I cannot imagine what Jr. will feel when that car shows up
    at Daytona.
I vote for retiring the number.
If Austin has talent he can make any number just as famous. He does not need the 3. He would certainly get more respect from the fans and probably from those in the garage also.

CAN’T THEY HONOR DALE WITH RESPECT AND RETIRE NO 3,THIS ISN’T GOING TO GET MORE PEOPLE TO THE RACES IF THAT IS WHAT THEY THINK,PEOPLE WILL RESPOND BETTER TO RETIRING THE CAR IN HIS HONOR,JUST SAYING

OK, correct me if I am wrong since I am going back quite a few years here… but when Dale died and the #3 was retired… it was the #3 that was retired but the group of cars that had that number on them continued to race under the #29 and Keven Harvick was its driver. He continued racing in the #29 until he decided to leave Richard Childress because of the bad way he was treated by Childress. Yes, I am against the #3 coming back and especially being driven by Austin Dillon, of all people. If the #3 has to come back to the Sprint Cup, then it should only be driven by Kevin Harvick (which is impossible) or Dale Jr. (which also is impossible) or another race driver in the Earnhardt family. No one else!!!!! I think it should stay retired from Sprint Cup racing.

  31. Laure on
  32. Retire it.

The No. 3 was never officially retired. Childress just chose not to use it.

  33. Mavis Rideout on
  34. I suppose it was inevitable but I would have been pleased to see it retired. It is Richard Childress’s number to do with as he pleases and since Austin wanted it and gets what he wants it will be raced. Although I didn’t watch much racing (no cable) when Dale Earnhardt was racing I understand what he did for racing and why people feel the number should have been retired.
Merry Christmas Greg. I have been missing all your interesting posts.

  35. Julie Lindblad on
  36. I did read that the #3 will not be black. At least, if Childress wants the #3 back on the track, he had the feelings about Dale not to have it black.

  37. Roger Cochran on
  38. I think anybody Richard Childress wnats to use the number 3 is OK
Nascar did not retire any other number, some one got killed in.
    GOOD LUCK RICHARD! and RCR

  39. Stan White on
  40. I went to Charlotte many times, from California, in the late 70′s and early 80′s to watch Dale Earnhardt race. He was my Hero. He paid his dues, did it the hard way. I am now 75 years old and can’t figure out WHY the Number 3 has not been retired. There are lots of numbers the kid can use and create his own history. The way Dale did but without the backing the kid has. Dale referred to Nascar racing as IROC Racing in his later years. I agree totally. Nascar took the creativity out of the teams which was what Nascar was all about (individuality!) I feel that TV controls Nascar these days. It’s all about money and unfortunately all the fans are the losers, to bad a lot of fans don’t have a clue.

  41. Don Dick on
  42. No brainer It needs to be retired and put in the Hall of fame

  43. MARE on
  44. I would prefer the #3 be retired and never used. The Childress Grandchildren can use other numbers, But then again, they get about everything they want, so what difference does it make if the fans want the number retired, Childress won’t do it just because we want it retired. He wants to make money using that number and is expecting people to flock to see it on the track. Well, sorry, but I’m not for that at all.

  45. Alice Gallardo on
  46. I welcome the #3 back to the Cup Series. I can almost see Dale Sr, Austin’s godfather smiling down at the kid now and laughing outloud at the critics! Austin has shown he is a good wheelman and he will add to the #3 legacy. I don’t think there was ever any question that the #3 would not return. Richard Childress has kept the number and paid for the rights to use the number. So, bottom line, it is time for the naysayers to put on their big girl panties and deal with it.

Bill France before he retired and gave over NASCAR to his son, Brian. Told Brian
” If it isn’t broke don’t fix it. ” Brian did not take his dad’s words to heart and now you can go to any race on race day and buy any seat you want because there has not been a sell out, including at Bristol.
Dale Earnhardt Sr is and was ALWAYS my hero. Nascar and Teresa Earnhardt did not give Dale Earnhardt Jr the #8, now he has made #88 his number. Why can’t Austin make #33 his number. Retire the #3. People who are true fans of Dale Earnhardt Sr and The Earnhardt Family it is going to be very painful to see that back on the track, especially if Austin has a wreck in that #3. Flashbacks not good. Now if Richard Childress would NOT put any black on the car and different style 3 it might be not so painful. Not favor of #3 being on the track.

  47. Linda Brickhouse on
  48. Linda, I totally agree.

  49. Jesse on
  50. NO This number need to stay retire

  51. rocky on
  52. Richard Childress does not own the #3,It is owned by Nascar and Richard has paid Nascar every year since 2001 to retain the rights to the #3. I was and still am an avid Dale Sr fan. If Richard chooses to bring the 3 back so be it. I think Dale would be proud to have the number back on the track.

  53. KENNETH HALL on
  54. I WATCHED NUMBER THREE IN EVERY SPRINT CUP OR WINSTON CUP RACE ,I THINK IT SHOULD BE RETIRED . I DON`T THINK I WANT TO WATCH IT RACE AGAIN

  55. Joe on
  56. Childres has no feelings if he did he would not put the #3 back on the track. HE IS A LOW LIFE SCUMBAG !!

  57. Joe on
  58. Alice you got that all wrong. Scumbag Childress is the one wearing the big girl panties because he dosen”t have the stones to tell him whinny punk ass grandson that he can not drive the #3 If you thought there never was a question about the #3 returning to the track you do not know to much about NASCAR!

  59. Allen Reid on
  60. I agree that Dale would want his God son to run the Number 3, maybe even start kicking Butt with it like Dale like to do……”.just ment to raddle his cage”………might even be fun to watch..

  61. Helen Corbett on
  62. I will be pleased to see the #3 back on the track. It will be a constant reminder of Dale Earnhart and what a great driver he was, not that anyone could forget him.
Good luck to Austin Dillon. He has great potential.

  63. Dennis on
  64. I totally agree. It is time to put the #3 back on the track. Dale was my idol I was devasted to find out he had died due to his injuries. It is time to move on in life. That is what Senior would have wanted. Austin is a great fit for that rideand will do great in it. Go #3.

  65. rodney on
  66. Earnhardt also drove #2 and #15, should those numbers also be retired?

  67. wayne bratton on
  68. I do not agree with bringing the #3 back to NASCAR.As in other sports when they retire a No., they honour that person. Why would the # 3 come back when Dale was the greatest ever to have that no.? The Childress kids are spoiled just like Harvick stated. There are many Short track drivers that deserve a shot at NASCAR more than those spoiled brats. They never paid their dues like others have.I won”t watch another NASCAR race if this does happen. You want to see good hard nose racing, then go to the Snowball Derby in Pensacola Fl. at 5 Flags Speedway. These are the drivers that should someday get a chance at NASCAR,not some rich spoiled brats like the Childress whimps.

  69. Anne on
  70. The number #3 was driven by Richard Childers, but it was made well known by Dale Sr. I feel that as long as Dale Jr. is ok with it, I am ok with it. Just wish Jr. was the one driving it ! Best wishes Austin, those are big shoes to fill with the number #3 on your car.

SHOULD BE HARVICK OR DALE JR.HARVICK SHOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING #3 ALL ALONG.KEEP THE PUNKS OUT OF IT!!!

  71. Bill Bolek on
  72. Not just those two numbers. He also used #1, #7, #8, #19, #77 and #98. Hell why stop there, lets petition NASCAR to retire every different sponsor that he had on his cars. Get a life folks, it was “NEVER” Dale Earnhardt’s number it was Richard Childress’s and before that Junior Johnson’s.

  73. Paul on
  74. I support this move 100%!

  75. gm3amp88 on
  76. I AGREE I have had a # 3 on my trucks for many years but I will no longer have a 3 because I do not want anybody to think that I amsupporting a silver spoon punk Nascar should have retired the # 3

  77. Jim Logan on
  78. I think it’s time and Iike it being back

  79. linda davis on
  80. the #3 should be put to rest. just like the man who made the # what it is today . it should not ever be drivin by anyone ever again. RIP linda

  81. Rita Harrington on
  82. I will not ever pull for whose driving it.lot’s of people feel it’s childress’ car, which we know
but it was dale senior driving it,and there will never be another,J Johnson not even
close I don’t care how many championships he wins.Dales number should be retired.childress only doing that because of his grandson.hope he wrecks, and loses every race.I know dale junior agrees to run it,even though I pull for him,I disagree with the way he thinks.

I hope he wrecks and never wins,to whom is driving it.We all know it’s childress car
so what….it’s dale sr’s number. he made that number.also know dale jr.thinks it should be run.disagree with alot dale jr says.even though J Johnson has ? number of championships,he will never be as good as dale sr.

  83. Kevin Stueber on
  84. Well it is his car. I first thought well if any one should drive the number 3 car is should be JR. But then I thought well it’s not like he is running the same color so it will be good to see it back on the track.

  85. Paul on
  86. This idiot here must be on drugs or something calling DALE a crook Some people just don’t realize when they are around greatness In my book DALE EARNHARDT is the greatest stock car driver that has ever raced a stock car Someone needs to take this idiot to the doctor

  87. Pegi on
  88. I couldn’t agree more, Gayle. NASCAR should have retired the #3 and issued another number to Childress. After what Sr. did for the sport, his car belongs in the hall of fame.

  89. val hillyard on
  90. I HATE IT. I WANT IT RETIRED. I DONT GIVE A THAT IT IS HIS GRANDSON. IT IS DISRESPECTFUL IT IS HURTFUL. THE THREE SHOULD REMAIN ON THE 29 IN HONOR AND RESPECT. BAD IDEA WILL NOT FOLLOW ANY RCR CAR EVER. FOR A SUPPOSED FRIEND HOW DOES RICHARD TREAT ENEMIES

Tell me what you're thinking...
