7 Things That Are Really Getting Under Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Skin

Dale Earnhardt Jr let his frustrations pour out as he talked with a group of reporters at Charlotte’s Lowes Motor Speedway Friday.Dale Earnhardt Jr Frustrated

Earnhardt didn’t come out and say that interim crew chief Lance McGrew was out – but he didn’t stand very solidly behind McGrew.

1. He Needs An Authoritative Crew Chief

“Whoever I work with needs to be a dictator,” said Earnhardt about the man selected to sit on the pit box and make the calls.

“The most success I had was with Tony Sr. and you know how he runs his ship,” continued Earnhardt.

Yet Dale Earnhardt Jr insisted he is not qualified to pick his own crew chief.

2. No One Has Made A Decision

“I don think I’m the guy to leave that decision up to cause I wouldn’t make the right one, said Earnhardt on picking a crew chief. “There’s probably better people to make it especially in the organization. There’s a lot of smart people around there and I’m just waiting on someone to make the call”

Junior was agitated by the fact that no decision has yet been made on leadership for his team next year.

“Put the Damn team together and say this is what you got this is what you’re gonna do next year,” said Junior.

3. He Hasn’t Lost Confidence or Ability No Matter What Some People Think

Still Earnhardt insisted that he had not lost confidence in his ability to drive a race car.

“I just come to the race track and climb in a car. If it goes fast it goes fast,” said Earnhardt.

When asked if he was second guessing himself Dale Jr simply said “no.” Then paused and added “I’m past all that, I’m over it.”

4. Fans and the Media will Be Hard on Whoever is Picked to Lead His Team

When asked if a crew chief change needed to be made now before the end of the season to get a jump on next year Earnhardt took Lance McGrew’s side.

“I don’t think we need to do that, said Earnhardt. “We’re getting better with Lance. Nothing’s wrong with how that’s going for the most part but Hell you don’t even know if Lance wants to do it.”

“I Wouldn’t want it,” Earnhardt said of the crew chief job. “I wouldn’t want to do it. Tough job.”

5. Just Getting to the Finish Line Would Mean A Lot

“How do you keep your head up” – Claire B. Lang asked Junior how he kept his head up amidst all the turmoil.

“Hopefully we can finish one. That should do a lot for us if we can finish one,” replied Dale Jr.

“I ain’t ready for the season to be over ‘cause I like going to the racetrack and racing.”

“I don’t know — what the hell. We just need to run better. It’s not happening. Its not happening fast enough.”

6. Junior Is at A Loss as to What Would Improve his Racing

One reporter asked Junior if it helped that Talladega, Texas and Martinsville were coming up on the schedule – some of his best tracks.

Dale Jr simply said “no.”

“It’s really frustrating. I’m just trying to get better. But I don’t know what the answer is. I’ve tried to think about what the answer is and I don’t know what it is.”

Would Dale Jr ask for Tony Eury Sr. – his original crew chief – back?

“I don’t think Tony Sr. would be interested in working in the Cup Series. It’s not a very fun place,” said Earnhardt.

“It takes a lot to be here. For anybody to work in and around this garage it’s really, really frustrating and really hard. You really have to commit yourself. He’s been out of it and he’s seen that’s not all there is to life. He has fun where he’s at so I don’t think he’d accept the opportunity.”

7. Earnhardt Feels He Has Lost Control

Dale Earnhardt Jr is locked into 3 more years of a 5 year contract with Hendrick Motorsports. He also has sponsor commitments in place. He can’t just jump ship and go somewhere else.

“I feel like I don’t have any control,” said Earnhardt.

“Rick’s put me in a great position – but – I haven’t made the most of it. For whatever reason we’re just not getting it done. I don’t know what to do.”

    2. Jr., I can’t imagine how hard it is for you so far this year, it must be the worst of any year you’ve had. All I want to say is just try to shake it off and get in that car and DO what you KNOW you can do. Let’s just get this year over with and look out for next year, it should definitely be your year!!!     i don’t blame dale jr. for being so upset. he has ran good this year,but hasn’t won yet.he will come back better than ever! i know that. jr is a very smart driver, & one of the coolest drivers out there. we should all support him now. he has had some bad luck this year,but he will get it together! he just needs a good crew chief! maybe lance doesn’t want to be there. they should get someone else if he doesn’t.jr doesn’t have any control who they get. but junebug we love you and will support you no matter what happens.next year will be better i’m sure. just hang in there. a jr fan forever!

    I will NEVER leave Dale Jr. I don’t care what happens and where he finishes. With Jr you know you are with a good up standing person that has worked like the devil to get where he is. He has never let his name or his racing go to his head. You sure can’t say that about any of the others. When you are a TRUE JR FAN you are there until you die. Go JR, we are ALL still behind you and always will be. We are proud to call you OUR driver.

    Your one of the top ten driver’s in the history of NasCar and you know that. I’m 51 years old and i’ve been an Earnhardt fan since your dad was running for Osterman. You know what you can do, your one of the most talented, gifted & natural drivers i’ve ever seen. All you have to do is climb into the “Lions Mouth” and do what comes natural, put everything else out of your mind and drive the car. I know you get caught up in other driver’s fu*ckups and get crashed, power plants crapping out and a lot of that can’t be controlled by you. But what can be controlled is for you to put that # 88 up front in clean air, and keep it there. I know that’s easier said than done but you can do it. All due respect, if Mark “The Kid” Martin can come into the Hendrick’s organazation and do what he’s done, there’s no excuse why you can’t. Same iron, same equipment available, same power plants. Put your foot through the floorboard and jam that suicide pedal to the carburator and drive that soab like you stole it. You are the man! I am your biggest fan, through thick and thin.     GO DALE JR. You are a great driver, All the true dale jr fans will always be there 100%. You need to shake it off, Think of just driving, and tell everyone else to go milk a cow. True Jr fans will never let you down. We all have trials in our life, Just go out and drive for YOU. Kiss off everything else. You have a boss that should be digging into why the pit crew messed up. And for jerks running into you, that’s part of racing, atleast the old way of racing, I would like to see that come back. I’m 60 years old, I loved your dad, now your the man. Don’t worry about this other stuff. Just want to do it for you, no one else. Things will work out and next year you will really kick some butt. I never miss a race in Michigan or on tv. Just hang in there, you will be just fine.     Hi Randy, learn the facts and keep your mouth shut. Dale Jr was second in points most of last year and runs good and hard every week, he’ll be back better than ever. As for DEI he had no choice and he handled it like the person he is, with class. As for u Kyle Brush lovers who always are on here just to put Jr down, fact is Kyle is a nerd, know someone went to school with him and he always was a nerd and punk its almost funny everytime he opens his mouth shows how big and jerk he is and makes fool of himself. Truth is us jr fans don’t go to Kyle Brush sites and put him down, not worth the trouble but the Jr bashes are like Kyle, jerks and stupid

    Think that RICK SHOULD switch crew chiefs between Jimmie and Dale Jr – try it for a few months – HEY – Jimmie Johnson doesnt look like he needs a crew chief – see what happens?? And why out of the 4 cars – Dale Jr only has problems – this weekend transmission and a few weeks ago motor?? SOmething is missing with the 88 car – Think Chad and Jimmie need to be split up and see what happens???     Well Dale Junior, try acting like Dale Senior acted when he was raking in the sheaves with the NASCAR Circuit and winning all those Championships! That is why he got the nickname of being called “THE INTIMIDATOR”. Get your act together and race like your dad raced, he set his own way of racing and at least you can use his experiences to make yourself as good as or even better than your dad’s marks which he made and possibly in his own way giving you the direction to imulate which would give you a GIANT EDGE; and quit worrying about what your competition has to say about you, run the wheels off of that car, just like there is no tomorrow. Just LEAD & OTHERS will FOLLOW, but you will get that “CHECKERED FLAG” many times over and become a real great driver when the dawn sets on your driving career. You need to THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND AND LET THE HAIR GO WITH THE HIDE ON RACEDAY, only if you want to ever have a chance at being in the NASCAR HALL of FAME!     I know it is hard and you want to do your best, but things will turn around for you.
    Just be patience and go with the flow. Some
    drivers have a bad year or 2 and then they come
    back and have a great year. I feel it is not your fault or Lance, but you got to remember, you both only been working 1 year together and by learning what you did wrong this year can be good for next year. Also, you are going to win one race before 2009 is over. I am your fan for LIFE. Good or bad, I ll always be there for you.

We go home and bitch & moan about it, but some how it goes away or someone get it straightened out, and life goes on.     Very well said, you are right, a true fan does love their Driver unconditional!!!! I’m an Earnhardt Fan and have been since the first time I saw Dale Sr. race and I became a Jr. fan before we lost Sr. and I saw the support and Love Sr. had for Jr. when he won his first Winston Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway, I saw this in Person it was one celebration I will never forget, then to lose all that Love and support the next year, he not only lost his Father he lost his Hero, his Best Friend and his #1 Fan, it’s easy as fans to say this and that but in my opinion Dale Sr. is watching and is very proud of Jr. for the MAN that he has become!!!! Luck plays a big part in Racing. Jr, keep your head up the Luck will return and your true fans will always be HERE!!!!

    14. I think RG said it the best. Everyone has a bad year. Everyone wanted Eury jr gone, well he is gone. Give this new crew chief a chance. Look at RCR they are all having a crappy year. I am a Jr fan no matter what, but what does Kyle and Johnson have that no one else has. About time it was their year. Jr just keep your head up you can pull yourself out of this slump. No reason to get so down on yourself, your fan base will never desert you. Just go full steam ahead. You are the best Jr.

    I agree….we all have a period in our lives where we feel like life has given us a rough road to tow and this is just Junior’s year. In this case, it’s NOT the driver, but pure bad luck with the epuipment. We in the private sector have had purchased a “lemon” at least once in our lives, but there is always that end of the rainbow waiting for all of us.

That is hogwash he gets the same as all of the Hendrick drivers get .If all 3 of the other drivers can get er done I know that Junbug can get it done to .It is just going to take some time for him to get setteled in .I like Jr even though most of his fans hate most if not all of his team mates but for people to say that he isnt getting the same equipment that all of the Hendrick drivers is getting is just a cop out

    19. I have always been and always will be a Jr fan. I think Jr is his biggest critic. He has so much pressure on him it is hard to focus on what he loves best, racing. Jr. don’t compare yourself to ANYONE!!you are one of a kind and were born to race.     20. As a loud part of Jr Nation we will always be behind you. BUT you have to stop being so hard on yourself in your head. It is affecting your personality and performance. Where is that kid that used to run at Myrtle Beach and was just happy to be there. You were so HUNGRY, You were driving with your natural talent and not trying to force it. Your head is in the wrong place and you are not having fun any more. It is so obvious. BUT what else is obvious is that you know how to drive, how to pull up from the bottom like you did when you were first starting out and get in the car and have fun. The rest will be history. Everyone has slumps, well this is yours and its up to you to get your butt in gear and turn it around. We know you can do it, you know you can do it, so just DO IT..We have been behind you all the way now get in that car and drive it like you stole it. A test of who you are and a test of your want to. Don’t get discouraged and believe that you are one of the best. The test we go through in life are what make us better people, or in your case an even better driver. The only fault I see in you, if you can call it a fault is, you are too nice sometimes. I know that makes you a good person and it is who you are, but you need to quit taking so much crap from other drivers and saying that it is you mistake when something happens. It is not always YOUR fault.

Hopefully Mr. Hendricks as Jr. calls him will get things straightened out, he wouldn’t have put Jr. in the car ifhe didn’t have faith in him getting the job done.     27. Junior is probably going through his mid-life transition. The best thing he can do is to find someone worst off than himself and help him through his troubles. Once one’s focus is on self we usually wind up depressed and without any direction. In helping another he will forget about himself and his thinking will clear up. Get you a good horse (Arabian) which will have a relationship with you close akin to a dog. “The outside of a horse is good for in inside of a man.” Don’t forget you are your own problem and nobody else is to blame. Always helps to get mean on the track. A Teddy Bear can not be a winning race car driver. WE all still love ya!

    31. Your fans are standing behind you. Personally I think the whole problem is with the pit crew. They have cost you some time on pit row with just stupid mistakes, example not getting the lug nots on or tight, let tires roll off, etc. JUST STUPID STUFF. I feel Lance is doing good, at lease he has Jr. up front more then what Tony Jr. did. Then engines blows, not Jr. fault, tire blows, not Jr. fault, then #00 runs into him, again not Jr’s fault, the list goes on.
    Dale Jr. has spoke his peace now somebody has to correct the problem.

    That makes this one of the old chassis that Tony Jr. made based on the specs he took from DEI in 2007. But with HMS making chassis for 6 cars you probably can’t expect more than 2 new chassis.

    50. You people and your stupid beliefs that Rick Hendricks is not providing JR with cars that are just as good as the ones that Jimmy, Jeff, and Mark are getting. Could it be that JR and Lance are just not getting the job done when it comes to setting up the cars to be as competitive as the others? Nobody is trying to sabotage JRs raceing carrer. As far as JR trying to use Jimmys set up, almost every driver has their own style of driving and trying someone elses setup is pretty much a no go situation. Besides, after almost two years with Hendricks, don’t you think that they have tried that by now or at least have given it some thought? I know this is not going to go over very well with all you JR fans but personally, I think JR is just not as hungry for a win as he used to be. He just doesn’t seem to be as focused as he once was. Any way, I wish him all the luck in the world with getting his “groove” back because it must really be depressing to be having such a rotten time of it out there.     56. First let me say I am a diehard Dale Jr. fan. That said, I do have doubts as to whether or not he is getting equipment as good as Jimmy. Not just Dale either. Mark has had his troubles this year, although I feel like Hendrick has forgotten Dale for Mark, and even Jeff is still having some problems. Do you all remember last year when Jeff was having an off year? Well it seems to be happening to Dale this year. As much as I like the Hendrick team, I am tired of seeing Jimmy win all the time. I cheer for other drivers (except Kyle) to beat Jimmy just to see someone different. I still say that even though all the teams are suppose to share their info and ideas, I think Chad holds something back. I just find it hard to believe that one driver can run that good every week and every year. Even Dale Sr. had an off year! I agree with Dale as far as Tony Sr. being his crew chief, he won his most races with Tony Sr. Come on Rick, give Dale what he needs. He is sure bringing you lots of sponsors, money, and attention.     Actually Rick is running six cars with Newman and Stewart.Five are in the chase and one is not. what is wrong with this picture. Rick knows that Jr Nation is going to support Jr no matter what so that is not his top concern. If its because cc and Jr communicate- then he has not been listening lately. Jr running in top ten, car handling fairly well-pit stop, car not handling at all-cc apologizing again-Jr in a quiet voice “this is what I have come to expect.” I t also seems to me that there are several folks that either don’t care, or just take no pride in their work, and where are those engineers that are supposed to be helping the crew chief? So many questions. I do have a poster with Big E on it. At the top it has the word Reflections, on the bottom “looking back, knowing that you gave it your all…win or lose, you finish a champion.” That fits you Jr. You have always given your all and we know that you will continue to do so. He said it is killin him what they are doing to Jr. He said his team has to be committed if he is going to win and they are NOT! From a man who worked at Hendrick until Rick sent him to Ryan Newman, that says volumes to me. Ok Rick wake up and do what is right!!!! Tony Gibson said he just hopes they do something before its too late! I think that means Jr may be thinking he is so bad he won’t race again. If he quits I will never watch a race again .     together but it took time. They are a working
    combination now. Martin – well what can we say about that Silver Fox. He still has that
    compasion fueled with fire and determination. Remember he is 50and you are only 35. Just relax and enjoy the moment. You don’t have to win this year because YOU ARE A CHAMPION in life overcoming what most are not confronted with. Right now it’s you who needs to relax,
    ask for guidance that you are in the exact
    spot you should be so when your days of winning come, you will be healthy and happy

    80. Dale: I think you should start your own team like Tony Stewart has done. You would be much better off because no one will ever convince me that for some reason Jimmie Johnson is always the winner. Ihave no doubts in my mind that he cheats or Gordon would have at least one a race. Like the one I saw, Gordon let Johnson win, it was so obvious. From what i hear from dale jr, is that he needs someone on the pit box, that will take charge. please let tony sr. sit on the pit box with lance mcgrew. teach him what comes so well natural to pops. pops doesnt sit back, he takes charge. i am so happy with the fans, that have voted him the most popular driver for the 7th yr. that says alot to me. what i saw for the 2009 season, when lance took over, i say jr is on the way back. watchout 2010.
